Underrated Ipswich Riders From The Past

Nice names..many of whom were dragged along by the example of John Louis, the force of John Berry..and the amazing support. But having watched the fabulous sides of JB..the awful crap from Chris Shears...my choices would be Mike Lanham (who worked full time)....Bert Edwards...Ted Howgego..Mick Hines...Tim Hunt..Preben Ericksen...

The real triers were those who really had no natural talent...but excelled when most needed.

Many names..Jolly..Doncaster..Knight..Castagna..etc..were not underated..they had status...Oh how I miss those days..over 30 years ago when Foxhall was a cauldron every Thursday....when Uncle Lenny..Martin Rogers..Cyril Crane..Reg Fearman..etc came visiting..but did it get tough when we went to their tracks !!

Very true Speigal regarding the likes of Lanham and co. Certainly the 70's were great times at Foxhall. I'm convinced with how speedway is nowadays regarding costs, chances to race/practise and opting for (in some cases!) ready made foriegners, riders like Lanham, Howgego, Dave Gooderham and even someone as good as Shrimp Davey wouldn't of gone as far in present times than they did back then!

You aren't very complimentary about Chris Shears (WHICH IS UNDERSTANDABLE IF WE'RE BEING HONEST!) but then mention Castagna as someone who had status but the much maligned Shears signed him so credit where credits due!

I know you don't go much on the present day Ipswich speedway but present times are different to the 70's early 80's with so much more things to do than in the past, and less disposable cash for most people.

Yes I'll agree John Berry was a great promotor even though he was a moody so and so and very aloof unless you was in his inner circle but I think if the 1970's John Berry was transported via a time machine to present times I don't think he'd do any better than what the equally aloof Chris Louis is doing!

Have to disagree Berry was a one off,ok he was not everyone's cup of tea but if he was given the reigns ENGLISH speedway would be in better shape now. Edited by sidney

absolutely spot on. not sure you can mention c.louis in the same sentence as john berry

Colin i like Chris alot enjoyed watching him as a rider and he was good. Also i enjoy Chris on sky loves his speedway which shows also Tiger was a legend.Berry for me would be in the promoters bracket of Parker,Silver,Thomas,Fearman,(ect) ahead of his time in a way his Ipswich sides ( like sir Bobby footy great to watch).

i would love to see a john berry statue myself..they rare to say the least in speedway circles..chris was clearly a decent rider, you couldnt argue with that, but on the promotion side (as yet early) he is way way behind on that score..those posts that knocked mr shears, for me, horrid times, but at least it was top flight, for me,thats where witches should be today, tomorrow and as long as foxhall exists
