Berwick Make Changes

Recommended Posts

IN-FORM star Edward Kennett is looking to make up for recent British Final disappointments when he competes in the national championship at Wolverhampton on Monday.Kennett, who is enjoying a fine first season at Blunsdon, is a former runner-up in the showpiece event but has crashed out of the Final in the last two years. He said: “It's going to be a tough meeting because obviously everyone wants to win the British Final, but I'll be going there with a strong head like I normally do and I'll just see how I get on.“I'm on pretty good form so I'd like to think I stand a good chance, but it's a long meeting and anything can happen. We've just got to focus to try to get in that Final. Once you get there anything can happen and that's when it really matters.” good luck Eddie!

Nice of the BSPA site to acknowledge Eddie's new club, eh? In recent seasons Bandits have had Paul Clews and Ricky Ashworth in the British Final, but we'd have to go back 22 years to have had a Berwick rider in the British Final with every chance of winning it!

Who was that then?

Genuine question - my memory you know.

According to Sky's coverage, it was Birmingham's Ricky Ashworth last year!

Just thought - could it be Kelvin Tatum. (I had to think about that).

Probably - though most Bandits fans would probably have been shouting for Richard Knight.

Considering he has not even turned a wheel for them it is not a surprise IMO.

Sky always put the riders elite league team down when covering the british final if they double up. why they do it i don't know. maybe because it's a higher league or something like that

All of which I'm fully aware - Ashworth's Birminghamassociation was merely more amusing than Sky's usual efforts because he hadn't ridden for them at the time of the British Final.

Eddie Kennet is a Swindon rider, so this will take priority, Berwick is temprorary doubling down facility. Brilliant he is riding for Berwick as well mind.

Richie Worrall was a 'Lakeside' rider last year, even though he was only a D/U for them but a full team member of the Diamonds.

I think you're wrong there. 165 nicker is the best he could earn riding in heat 15. I bet that wouldn't even cover a third of the expenses he'd need to even get to Berwick and back so probably not worth him bothering with!

Would it have done him if he chose to go to Leicester? Those grapes that you're eating must be REALLY sour!

I am aware of the £55 limit hence the wink at the end.

Where theres a will theres a way!

As an aside - are there any clashes with Swindon meetings and will the normal PL preference still apply?

It has been mentioned that EL will get preference where the PL fixture is a change from the original fixture list. Does signing part way through the season count as a change and switch preference?

No sour grapes, just a surprise from one of the clubs shouting the loudest about keeping costs under control at the AGM. Would the tackling below be the sliding variety or just the old style two footed studs showing ?

Club Co-Promoter Dennis McCleary added: “We are in negotiations with a number of riders for 2013 with most realising that they need to take a pay cut in order to race in the Premier League in 2013.

“We have been enthused by the reaction by most of the riders who realise that without the clubs there is no league speedway and therefore no job for them at all.

“It looks as though we will once again have 13 clubs come to the Premier League tapes for 2013 stretching the length and breadth of Great Britain and it would be a travesty if even one club folds as that is seven riders unemployed.

“We are not in a unique financial position at Berwick, and therefore league bosses have to be applauded for tackling the problems before they escalate beyond repair.

Ive no doubt that the Berwick promotion done their sums financially before signing Kennett, and feel the money their paying him can be covered by the extra people coming through the gate, especially if Berwick are winning. If they they get it right then the jobs a good one,get it wrong and the promotion will have to make up the shortfall.

As things stand there are no fixture clashes,Swindon have no fixtures on the 2 thursdays Berwick are riding at present,at least at the minute those 2 thursdays are down as reserved on the Swindon site.Of course all of this is dependent on how long Kennett is with Berwick.
