Glasgow V Newcastle Pl Sunday 5th May 2013

Newcastle's first Premier League match. Cup matches are fine but the Premier League is what every team wants to do well in. As usual I am going for a Newcastle win :-)

So it's a bank holiday weekend , that means the Geordies come calling . Berwick , Rye House and Redcar have been despatched from the new , improved Ashfield , but this will be our sternest test so far .

Newcastle came close to winning the lot last year , only an injury to Richie Worrall prevented that happening . Still topping the league and winning the KO Cup wasn't too shabby .

Newcastle have assembled another strong side this year and have started well despite losing Two Track to injury on their press and practice day . Adding another track to his CV proved a tad difficult . But as Ashfield wasn't one of his two tracks , r/r could prove troublesome .

It's much the same Newcastle team as last season . The largest nose in speedway has moved to the south coast , but most of last season's squad return . Stuart Robson is always a handful round Ashy , as is returning Glasgow title winning hero Christian Henry . The Worrall twins , Richie and the other one , are back in the side along with the lesser Lindgren and young Lewis Kerr , who seems to have sprung from nowhere to post some impressive scores .

Yes we'll need to be firing on all cylinders to get the better of this lot .

Teams should be -

Glasgow

1 Joe Screen

2 Joey Ringwood

3 James Wright

4 Henning Bager

5 James Grieves

6 Harley Horwood

7 Joe Jacobs

Newcastle

1 Stuart Robson

2 R/R for Two Track

3 Christian Henry

4 The lesser Lindgren

5 Richie Worrall

6 Lewis Kerr

7 The other Worrall

If all the guys are firing on all cylinders, and that means Henning needs to get his act together, then Glasgow will win by a tight margin. However, if they aren't then the Diamonds will go down the road with the points.

I'll settle for James Wright not anticipating the tapes and some decent racing. Reserves are crucial for us as is Bagers need to turn round his poor start to the season. Draw sounds good to me.

Agree that's a worry regarding Wright . He seems to have become the proverbial gating tart at this stage of his career , and his eagerness at the tapes will have to be tempered .

The ref on Sunday was wise to him, possibly why he was twice caught out. We can't afford any needless exclusions on Sunday with everyone allowed an extra r/r ride for Tully.

Surely it's not the ref's job to beat the riders? I think though that it's the rider's job not only to beat the opposition but to anticipate the ref releasing the tapes. If a rider moves (forward) but doesn't touch the tapes good on him, but if he moves and causes another rider to touch the tapes then the ref could exclude (or is it disqualify) him. :t::drink:

But if he gets excluded twice for bursting the tapes and his team end up one point shy of the 3 league points in a home match there is an issue. We need all points to count as the new riders settle in.

I wasn't referring to James but starts in general.

Should be a cracker! Weather reports suggest we've seen all the rain we are going to this week. So plenty time to get the track in tip top condition, to provide some exciting racing.

...and with Glasgows 3 young lads I'm sure there will be excitement a plenty.

Going for a narrow Glasgow win. Possibly even a last heat decider :-)

And here was me thinking that a rider must be stationary at the start.

15.3.2 "Once satisfied all Riders are correctly positioned, their motorcycles stationary and the rear wheel in contact with the track surface"

If the green light's on it's time to go. :t::cheers:

Which is entirely wrong :) When the green lights are initially turned on they will be under the Starting Marshall's orders. i.e. stationary.

If they move at this point then the referee should exclude that rider for not following the Starting Marshall's instructions. The rider is only allowed to move once the tapes have risen.

Normally, the ref's bottle it and just give the rider a "warning" for moving at the starts. The clever ones wait until the rider who is moving has to stop to avoid touching the tapes and then raise the tapes. This is a natural way of keeping the riders stationary.

The referee is under no compunction to release the tapes at any time and theoretically could keep the riders their for a minute until he releases the tapes. The only requirement is a minimum of 1 and a 1/4 seconds until the tapes rise I believe.

There would be some burnt out clutches if he did that.  :blink:
