Edinburgh Monarchs V Berwick Bandits (lc) Friday 26 April 2013

Razor still on holiday?

Clearly not, he is quoted on your club website last week and this. Why should you ask?

Ricky Ashworth seems to be out for a while after his two successive concussions, Kevin Doolan guests on Saturday but (with progression in the competition now less than likely, to say the least) tomorrow's match sees r/r giving the other Bandits some extra pocket money.

If its the normal bandit performance at Edinburgh, there won't be too much pocket money being earnt  :-p

Berwick changed their riding order seen as though r/r according to the preview on the edinburgh website

1 Ricky Ashworth r/r

2 Kozza Smith

3 Robin Aspegren

4 Matthew Wethers

5 David Bellego

6 Alex Edberg

No, berwick are still lining up the same way except that it R/R for Ashworth. The Preview was the way the teams were expected to line up but the official line ups are on the link that i posted in my last post.

Well that was a bit wet tonight but the times got a bit quicker as the night went on as the track dried out a bit.

Race of the night was probably between max fricke and robin aspergren with aspergren dive bombing the young aussie only for him to cut back and drive back under aspergren going into the final bend and making it sick for his first paid maximum in the blue & gold!

Considering the extreme weather conditions in the late afternoon & early evening (a mixture of torrential rain & hailstones), Doc Bridgett & his track team deserve credit for providing a track which although heavy, did produce some exciting racing, which visiting guest, fashion designer guru, Jeff Banks, publicly expressed his amazement at for his first ever experience of live speedway :approve: .

Twelve of the thirteen riders involved got stuck in and in the early stages a Bellego inspired Bandits looked like they could possibly pull off a shock result.

However as the track improved, Monarchs took control with Cook and Pijper leading the onslaught.

As already mentioned, Max Fricke's hard riding duel with Aspegren was the race of the night and indicated that the U-21 Oz Champ is now on an upward slope and will not be brushed aside by more experienced opponents.

Cook- Cookie barring nearly taking himself off in heat 1, his usual flawless self there after.

Derek-looked a bit overly cautious in heat 1 but great and usual reliable self there after.

Theo- fast, found lines that nobody else could find. In his only defeat was on the impressive Bellago s exhaust pipe.

Max- best meeting so far. Great race to beat the fast Aspergen.

Claus- one slow start resulted in him getting filled in and trailing in Stormy s wake.

Marcel Helfer- track wasn't great but from scoring positions he seemed to shut off and decide it wasn't for him.

Joe Tabaka- solid as ever.

Bandits

Bellago- started like an express train. Tailed off a bit, but impressed.

Smith- one decent ride in heat 7, not great there after.

Stormy- mixed bag. Two decent heats. Slipped off in difficult heat 1. Great race with Derek. Didn't always look the fastest.

Aspergen- improved as the heats went on. Attacked the track and provided good action.

Edberg- so, so not the greatest night. Hard heats and slog.

Barrett- see above

I think a big well done has to go Doc Bridgett and his crew for getting a track, that albeit very heavy due to the weather, was still able to produce some exciting heats of Speedway.

Thought the Bandits looked very good in the first half of the meeting, but at the same time always had a feeling that if the rain stayed away and the track got drier the Monarchs would pull away, and that they did. But that doesn't mean the Bandits shouldn't be proud of their efforts last night. Their two reserves in particular, who attacked the track, despite conditions, and looked comfortable. Considering I've seen many more experienced rider turn up and be defeated before a wheel has turned at Armadale, that being in decent conditions, the Bandit faithful should be delighted that they have two young lads who just got on with it, and In my opinion showed a really good attitude.

All in all a much more entertaining meeting than what I was predicting, and I do think once the season gets going Berwick could indeed pull off a few "Shock" results.

That 37 points will become a yardstick for visiting sides at Armadale this season, and half the league won't achieve it.

Edinburgh look to be very strong, and when Fricke goes to reserve he will surely blossom.

The German chappie seems to have one startlingly-good race in him every match -- unfortunately last night's was obviously not due until Heat 14, from which he was dropped.

For Berwick, it is good to see Edberg fully earning a few points, hopefully silencing some very unfair criticism.

The Bandits are a solid squad, and will rarely be totally humbled on the road this year. Hopefully Ashworth can be expected back soon, but judicious choices of a guest will perhaps negate his loss.
