Mad Potter 2
You're either a class A moron, or you're taking the piss. You know as well as I do that things have changed in the past 30 or so years with regards to projects line this. Why do you think the new silencers were introduced? Careful that bed bug brain might get bigger.
ch958
Just looked on the defunct tracks site and here is a link to EP. If you toggle down a fair way to EP v Newcastle you can see in the background some houses, not sure if these are the same ones but they look close. http://www.defunctsp...rt Speedway.htm And they look private rather than social housing
seanmuffe
I'm afraid not gustix - I'm afraid I'll be long dead before Sunderland would be even considered. Thank you for your Post though. :) ..isn't there a Messiah now operating nearby maybe he could be enlisted to help I believe Gladiators are something he may have a soft spot for bearing in mind his origins. Wouldn't it be wonderful ..........sadly I fear you are right ..........but here's hoping anyway.

I am sure a lease could be altered or rewritten if the will was there.
cityrebel
i remember ellesmere port as a big fast track when i went there in the early 1980's. john jackson and the carr brothers used to really fly around there. will speedway ever return to thornton road, who knows. it would take a brave or foolish person to put money into speedway these days, when crowds are declining at most tracks. Ray Stadia
Ellesmere Port, if they were able to gain permission and operated in either PL or NL, could be a good feeder for Belle Vue, which I believe it was in the past.

I know Rochdale was in effect Belle Vue second Team with Peter Collins etc. riding for them - but - to be honest I can't remember about Ellesmere Port being a Feeder Club. I am prepared to admit - it is my memory, it's not what it used to be. AGE you know.

25yearfan
Rochdale speedway packed up in 1971 because it never got crowds of ay note! Trouble was the set up was basically Belle Vue running at aother track, it had hardly any identity of its own! Ellesmere Port was opened for speedway in 1972 by that great great promoter (Someone who did actually promote!) Ian Thomas. With it being not a million miles from Rochdale/ Belle Vue they always had a fair few links with them tracks and quite often second half riders from Belle Vue who were ready for National League racing went there. Riders like Chris Morton, Paul Tyrer, Graham Drury with strong Bele Vue links rode for the Gunners! If speedway came back to Ellesmere Port then PL or NL would be the most likely Leagues the Gunners would comeback in and again it'd be likely any promising riders in the North West could end up riding for them! Would love to see Ellesmere Port back cause I think if an properly PL and NL speedway could be viable there. Yes it closed two times in 82 and 85 because the crowds wern't great but then again Scunthorpe never had decent crowds in them days and look how successful they've been since coming back in 2005! FAST GATER
The Rochdale licence was transfered to Elle Port so that maybe why some of the B/vue riders were involved and the link was formed ,when Jim Sefton bought the club from Thomas the Contracts had the name of Rochdale Hornets mentioned on it .I was told this by Sonny Dewhurst( former B/Vue rider) the team manager who witnessed the transaction ,I believe he was also a personal friend of Jim's. Brian Buck
It would be good to see Ellesmere Port back in action, but we need to remember that it closed twice because attendances were never good enough for the promotion to pay its way. Getting planning permission would seem to be a major obstacle. I have worked with Tony Mole for over 20 years and I know how thorough and knowledgable he is in respect of planning matters, yet the two attempts he made to resurrect Ellesmere Port foundered over the planning issue. I don't believe that there was a great dealof opposition from local residents so this suggests that the Council themselves remain the stumbling block. Whatever their faults the new silencers definitely make a real difference and there is no question that Birmingham Speedway would not be operating now had it not been for their introduction. The reduction they have made to the noise levels (which was between 5 and 8 decibels) enabled the planning officer to change his recommendation from refusal to conditional acceptance and the planning committee then approved permanent planning permission subject to these silencers becoming compulsory. This is a very important point and could be used to help Ellesmere Port and other prospective new or resurrected old venues.
manchesterpaul
Apparently so.I saw recently that the long running battle at Pocking Germany is still rolling on.The woman who has been complaining for years has got a number of training days stopped because of the noise.Even though the bikes are now quieter and there is a motorway louder than the speedway 24/7 nearby !!!! Across the world this exact situation exists where speedway is quieter than some other local source of noise. Is every council in the world thick or corrupt? It would be good to see Ellesmere Port back in action, but we need to remember that it closed twice because attendances were never good enough for the promotion to pay its way. Thanks for that info i was just about to ask someone to confirm that Ellesmere Port was hardly ever a hotbed of support despite the city of Liverpool being nearby. Might be near mile wise but the Mersey is in the way. Either a big detour or two expensive tunnel tolls make it difficult for the folks the other side of the water

steve19620
This is quite an interesting thread - from a Gunners fan still living in Ellesmere Port ! The problem with reopening Thornton Road for Speedway is not parking, noise or local housing but the lease. When the original application by Tony Mole was rejected by the local Council the lease was offered (and accepted) to a Greyhound operator. (Interesting to note - this happened within days of the Council's rejection and suggests this was always the Council's preferred option). The lease was originally supposed to be for 25 years but due to a Council misunderstanding ended up being a 125 years instead ! When the e-petition was presented to the local council early last year they confirmed the stadium lease was only for the use of Greyhound racing - much to the anger of expectant Gunners fans. As it stands without the lease conditions being changed the return of the Gunners at Thornton Road won't happen. Just for interest - the Stadium does look smart (from the motorway), however the back straight stand has been taken down and is now open to the elements, whilst the pits were demolished a number of years ago. As like many Gunners fans I only been inside the Stadium once (when attending Tony Mole's interest meeting next door) since Joe Owen's Benefit meeting in 1985. I still pine for a Gunners return - just hope I can win the lottery ! Edited April 29, 2013 by steve19620
