Backless
Or alternatively he could have chosen to shake things up a bit and get people talking, fired up a little and looking forward to the (then) forthcoming match. Why on earth would anyone want to do that? Had Stead completed a lap, he'd have probably hit double figures, making it much more of a contest than having his rides covered by weak, rookie first time visiting reserves. That would then be an enjoyable fixture, with the right result for the locals, taking delight in showing "the Sheffield blowhard" what's what. As far as "looking foolish", I'm sure it'll be like water off a duck's back. More power to him.

Massey Harris
Hoggy would not have said anything to damage the prospects of a decent crowd and would probably have done exactly what the promotion asked last week. Seems like the old boy got you all wound up then, how was the crowd somebody told me it was much better than the previous week?.

spin king
Not very often I defend Mr Hoggy. But lets get real, there is nothing wrong with a bit of trash talk/ banter, which is what it was and certainly got few of the fans from the Home of the Wulfsport Jacket talking and wound up. Good win for Workington last night, and they have been a thorn in our side on more than one occasion and have been the most successful visiting team to Sheffield over the years.

Stan Duppcomic
the previous week we had hoggy as centre green presenter and he spent the whole night telling us how good the team was and how good albin was and how he would go great round derwent park must have been a different albin to who was there last night looked more dsangerous than good reminded me of carlos villas who rode for berwick a few years ago Don't ever go to a Pantomime. you'll be calling the Police to arrest the villain! That's all Hoggy is. a Pantomime Villain. You lot ought to know. He's been at Worky enough times!

Good win for Workington last night, and they have been a thorn in our side on more than one occasion and have been the most successful visiting team to Sheffield over the years. The thing is I am not sure it was 'banter' (and I was there, unlike anyone who has chosen to defend those remarks). Its fair to say he was bulling Sheffield up (he certainly wasn't doing a 'pantomime villain' act, winding fans up to get a reaction) although whether that was for the benefit of the Workington promotion's gate figures or to ram home recent results to those fans who have been critical of the Tigers line up - he certainly mentioned at least once that everyone had them down for the bottom two in a mocking tone - I am not so sure, although I suspect it was a bit of both. His comments about Albin, albeit in a joking way (he referred to feeding him on 'raw meat'), were certainly not trash talk and its little wonder that some from Workington regard them as laughable given the score Albin got on the night. It did appear to me that you had the Sheffield promoter saying how good his team was - and as I say, I didn't regard that as banter, wind up, trash talk, call it what you will - only for them to be anything but on the track.
scaramanga
hoggy is well liked at workington and would be welcome back anytime as presentor or in another roll but he made a little fool of his self thats the point some are trying to make
Django
His comments were just a bit of banter designed to get the interest and crowd up, this proved successful as it was the biggest crowd since opening night. It was all done in good humour I believe

Well I can only comment on what I read But I will say this. If the comments were so bad or in poor taste why was nothing said on the said meetings thread? Why did Workington invite the Promoter of another club, more so the Promoter of the team that is racing at the track as the Centre green presenter? Dave Hoggart is a wind up merchant. Dave Hoggart does have a habit of dropping himself in it. Dave Hoggart does have a bee in his bonnet that people predicted Sheffield to finish the bottom two. But if his words were that bad then the only person he has hurt is himself.

spin king
Nowt wrong with Dave, we need characters like him in the sport He is not a bad guy sometimes let his mouth run away with him sometimes, but I have always found him to be very approachable. I do think that he was miffed at the predictions about the Sheffield team for this season But with three riders on assessed averages no one was realistically going to predict us to get anywhere near the play offs. But for the first half home match against Workington and the match at Derwent Park the side has done really well and has been punching above its weight, and prove in the pudding is the fact that we took out two good teams in the League cup. And interestingly after 3 home and 3 away meetings out of the 3 riders on assessed average 2 out of the 3 are not far off their assessed averages, which is something were not quite expecting.

Its all banter Spin king, I had banter with Dave on Thursday at Sheffield and then again we exchanged cheeky grins at the start of the meeting at Workington , but all friendly stuff nothing nasty, he was just bigging up his team as we big up ours, a nice guy and always great to listen to on the mic and it was nice to rub it in that his predictions were way off mark

But if his words were that bad then the only person he has hurt is himself. I certainly don't think his comments were in bad taste and I regard him as a decent announcer - better than that bloke Sheffield have now, for a start. If memory serves me Workington is the third track I have seen him do at least some presenting this season (it might even be the fourth). I also think the last two comments you have made are spot on (and I'll accept your experience of him for the other two). My view was that anyone who makes out that something is special - or a lot better than others have suggested - only for that not to be the case will always look at least a little foolish and that's what I think happened here, and that his motivation for those comments was as much to defend his own team as to attract a crowd the following week.
