Berwick V Newcastle - Live On Sky - May 21st

Come on fellas, no need to fall out, we've been treated to a decent meeting, whether in attendance or on the screen it was a worthwhile watch. One small misdemeanour that only served to benefit the opposition in terms of galvanising them at a crucial stage of the meeting, so all's well that ends well eh.

I agree, it really is no big deal, it's something that happens in all sports.

In fact, much worse happens in many other sports.

The way to respond to gamesmanship (for the benefit of Erse on Fire) is to come out and beat the opposition: which Newcastle did.

A bit of controversy - within reason - does no harm!

maybe so, but Paul Starke comes on this forum looking for team places, Newcastle of all teams gave him an opportunity last year when no other did.... Then he does that?? At least he got punished for it in some sort of way, lets hope he learns from it.

And I've played and been involved in sport at a very high level, I know all about gamesmanship and sportsmaship Ed....

Biggest problem is the referees need the power to award in such blatant 'stay downs', even if it is the first lap.

Refs are allowed to fine riders for not making an attempt to clear the track, so it might have happened but not been allowed to broadcast it.

It would of been a Bandits win if Ricky Ashworth was fit,

But we would have had Luddi in the team then.

not sure, but wasn't a president set with complin a few year ago??

Yes. In his crash with DEEK on the third bend in an early friendly I think..

Getting your excuses in early?

Hugely enjoyed watching this one. Sky seemed to relish Berwick's efforts to make their cameras welcome. I'm told from two people who were there (and have not long got back) it was very well-presented in front of a very big crowd (Dick Barrie sensibly enticed back out of retirement!) and everything seemed spotless, new and and fresh. I'm also told Paul Starke was fined £100 for not clearing the track after what I thought was a genuine lay-down behind an out-of-control Kozza Smith.

Enjoyed yet another Premier League meeting on Sky, certaintly more entertaining than the El ones so far. Surprised a bit with the result, going into it I thought Newcastle would miss Ludvig too much and the Bandits would run out winners. Credit to Newcastle for the way they rode throughout by keeping it close and coming good in the end.

Kennett was a little bit disapointing, I have seen him on fire in the EL this season, but look a bit dis-interested in his last few rides. Aspegren expected more of aswell. Decent performances from Wethers and Smith, shame no Bellego as he is box office and maybe would have got a few more points than what RR got.

Great performances from R Worrall and Robson as you would expect and them two were backed up well with Christian Henry. However the star of the show for me was young Lewis Kerr. First time Ive seen him ride and very impressed with how he rode and good to see a young talent from a motocross background making such strides in short space of time.

Hopefully wont be long before the next PL match on Sky.

I have said before that in my experience Berwick have upped their game more than any other club in the country over the last few years and this meeting was good evidence of that. The overwhelming impression I got was of a promotion that pulled out all the stops to make their TV debut a success.

They undetook a targeted advertising campaign, making the most of the TV coverage and the reduced prices and that was always likely to draw in an increased attendance. I'd say that's the biggest I have ever seen at Berwick and I'll be surprised if some of the newcomers don't return.

Shielfield isn't a brilliant racers track but it was certainly at its best (or near its best) and produced a highly entertaining match, aided by the closeness of the score.

Its often the case that we bash promotions on here and in many cases those sort of comments are both justifiable and reasonable. Its very pleasing, therefore, to give John Anderson and his team a great deal of credit for the way they went about last night, and I'd say they set a standard for others to follow. I can't help but think that had others made a similiar amount of effort we might not be staring the loss of the broadcasting contract in the face.
