Scunthorpe V Ipswich (premier League) - Friday, April 19th (7.30pm)

Recommended Posts

To be honest I reckon Rob does a good job on the microphone, very humerous :) From the laughs in the stand on turn4 I think the majority enjoy his witticisms too.

The tapes have always been a problem to me, flapping around in the wind, why we dont have the joining pieces between the two tapes is a mystery to me.

Can someone take that microphone off Rob Godfrey please so he can concentrate more on providing a track that the Scunthorpe riders like and also the tapes were sagging badly in the middle tonight when released that gates 2 and 3 were always seemed to be at a disadvantage but fair play to Ipswich they came and rode with far more determination and had what Scunthorpe lack in 2 match winning reserves.

Surely the track is prepared before a meeting, not during it so being on the mic shouldn't make a great deal of difference

Plus why would you want the track prepared 'as the Scunthorpe riders like' when as it was it produced what many consider an excellent meeting?

I think that's an interesting point, maybe the home riders didn't like it,but as a paying punter I came away happy that I'd just seen some good entertainment

I guess it's a tough one for any track curator, does he make it for the fans or the home riders, having seen some great racing at Leicester once last year on a track the home riders hated, following week the riders were happy and the racing shyte,I think I'd go for the entertainment option

Well a great result which I do not think anyone really expected (Ive now eaten half that pie ;) ). The team are really starting to pull together and its showing in the results but CL must get rid of that useless makinen who is no good to man or beast. He apparently has family problems back home, my advice is go back home and get yourself sorted out mate and give us fans a break from your permanent ducks. Enough of that to much better things. As soon as Ben finds his Plymouth form, surely the Witches will be hard to beat on this form but as we all know form can fluctuate from meeting to meeting. What we need is consistency that has been sadly lacking in recent seasons and perhaps just perhaps that could return this season but Im not banking on it.

It's a wide track, so they need to look at the tensioning of the tapes - if they were a bit shorter and stretched a bit more, it would help to correct the sagginess. Just a few tests would work out the best configuration.

Also agree that there should be (if not already) vertical "joints" between the tapes, e.g. roughly in line with the painted lines between the gates.

So do I - one of the best I'd say, and definitely better than that clown Scunny usually have.

Quite :approve:

In my view its a pity that other tracks don't prepare their surfaces for spectators in the same way, and it didn't do Scunny much harm last season, did it ?

Cracking meeting :approve: and one that will definitely make me come back more often (and brave the nightmare of the M62 at Friday tea time). Top quality racing, last heat decider and a bit of controversy thrown in, and its why Scunny deserve a live Sky meeting. Who knows, we might actually see something entertaining on the box for once.

I think the Scorpions reserves aren't bad and deserve more time at least. What must be taken into account is that few have a reserve pairing as good as Ipswich's.

6 heat winners of gate 3 so not much or a disadvantage

I don't think gates 2 and 3 where disadvantaged because riders nearly always watch the magnet rather than the tapes.

Totally agree the witches have a strong reserve pairing, Scunthorpe should stick to their's longterm it will pay off.

Didn't see that result coming. Still a good meeting though & well done to Ipswich on getting the draw. Heeps is defintiely your man of the match but all chipped in with good points with Lanham winning it at the death. The scorpions couldnt gate to save their lives for the last 7 heats (with the exception of heat 14). Makinen looked awful but Risager wasnt much better only able to beat Bates from the Scorpions.

The scorps are still not firing on all cylinders, 2 heat wins at home for Auty & Howe is not good enough but our problems are more or less coming from the reserve berth. I thought before the season started that we were going to struggle, you need one strong reserve to carry the other & take rides from riders in the main body who are having issues. To be fair Irving would have given us that & it was unexpected when he decided to call it a day. I think Bates with a 6.5 established rider would have been great & allowed Birks/Toft into the reserve position with Bates, anyway I guess Douglas has 12 meetings to shape up & start scoring or we are going to have a long old season. Bates is on the pace but it doesnt matter if you are 2m behind or 100m if you still end up 4th after the first bend and get a 0 virtually every race.

Hopefully this is a wake up call for the scorps, Ipswich looked much better this year but are not as strong as Somerset, Worky, Newcastle or Edinburgh.

Why should Toft and Birks ever now be in the reserve berth, with there ability they are both top 5 riders and if they were not they wouldn't be doing the job they are capable of.Its the top 5 who haven't clicked yet havent had anough heat wins they will though given time. Edited by sidney

Does anybody know if any company films the meetings at Scunthorpe as I would like to get a copy of this meeting. Thanks

Sadly, Scunny don't have a regular filming crew...didn't see any camera's last night, great shame cos it was good meeting.

Sidney its not about Toft or Birks being a reserve standard, its a matter of building your team to your best advantage to win, if that means having a 5-6 ptr at reserve all the better, the strong reserve is then available to take rides for any occurence e.g. Tapes infringements, machinary failure, loss of form, injury etc with the two we have your not far off gauranteed a 4th place .

With 9.5 pts to play with, Douglas & Bates where not the best choice at all. I will support these two at the matches I watch as always but that doesnt mean I cant say on here that they are not good enough (yet), I sincerely hope they do improve, I was impressed with Bates in his last ride, right up with the back wheel of the Ippo riders but still a last place. I wouldnt like us to go the full season training our reserves to be 3 pointers when nobody else is doing it, I have patience but not forever, we've been through this before with many reserves given way too long. How long is that? I dont know but if your not scoring more than 3 points at home after 10-12 matches then its enough.. like I said I hope they both make it.

As for your top five not clicking yet statement, you are right they are not there yet but last nights draw was down to the reserves; 4 pts for our reserves & 16 pts for the Ipswich reserves, okay they are probably one of if not the strongest reserve pairing in the league.

A good post and you could well be right about the reserves 'Lewis,i don't go to Scunny but follow them closely. My belief is you have a team who could all improve there averages. But i have this nagging feeling that you might always have to rely on Josh getting 11 plus most meeting,s which he is capable of but over a long season is a big ask.
