Dream Track And 4 Riders

Recommended Posts

Any one who ever visited the Shay would know that the track was one on its own and provided the most exciting racing of any track during its time.

Many will only ponder the big names who rode there, but Halifax fans who appreciated triers and spectacular fence rider will understand choices.

Mike Hiftle was a leg trailers who shook many a world champion around the Shay.

Henny Kroeze was the epitome of Holland and a Shay spectacular.

Charlie Monk was the one to hate, a last place against the reserves but a first against world class around the boards.

Graham Plant was the one who never was, but he is.

Carter, Boocock, Younghusband, Roper were indomitable, but who ever you mention it can never be enough.

Hyde Road -- Peter Collins, Soren Sjosten, Chris Morton, Mark Loram, could watch that all night long, pure speedway.

and for something a little more savoury...

Owlerton -- Alan Wilkinson, Jack Millen, Roman Matousek, Sean Wilson, pick the bones out of that, no quarter asked or given.

Crikey!! - Now that WOULD be a Race. Only problem - the Crowd would need the Crash Helmets. :t:

The old Wembley with Hans Nielsen off gate one, Dave Jessup off gate two, Sam Ermolenko off gate three and on the outside waiting for the cut back, Ronnie Correy.

Riders that actually could have rode together, swap Jessup for Gollob at Odsal

Monmore Green = Ermolenko, Correy, PK, Lindgren

Hackney Speedway (Waterden Road)

1. Barry Thomas

2. Andy Galvin

3. Bo Petersen

4. Dave Jessup (always an away rider, but pure entertainment to watch)

This is going to sound extremely biased but I truly believe Hackney was the absolute pinnacle of Speedway Tracks for overtaking/close racing. It always appeared ultra-grippy with a raft of different racing lines. The banking on the fourth bend was steeper than anything I've ever seen elsewhere; to the extent that I've seen Barry Thomas come from 3rd/4th to 1st place on ONE bend many times over the years. Hyde Road may have been fast and pacey and was undoubtedly a great track. However, due to the home team's strength/dominance, I never saw as much passing there, compared to our humble little place in Waterden Road, east London.

In the good old days of The Speedway Mail/Speedway Star, a regular feature was 'Rider Profile'. It never ceased to amaze me how so many British League (thereafter National League) riders regularly rated Hackney's track so highly.

The track may have gone and my beloved Hackney no more. But my happiest memories of Speedway are here to stay.

Amen to that.

Wimbledon had the stadium but we had the track! ;)

Dudley Wood, with Gundersen, Penhall, Hancock, Pederson, Hamill any 4 from 5, and an away team of Nielsen,Olsen, Collins, Moran yes, the Track may have gone, but the memories remain.

I can sympathise and agree with that. :t::sad:
