Leicester V Edinburgh 13th April Plus Track, toilets & Other Debates

I can't see them making changes until Roynan's fit, which hopefully won't be too long now.I think the 2 riders who are riding below expectations are Nielsen & Nieminen. Kauko just doesn' t look fast this year & is not scoring the big double figure scores you expect from the no.1. It would be very harsh to drop him after all he has done over the last 2 seasons, but points wise it would give more room to play with. Roynan's average is 1.11 below Kauko's. Nielsen is 4.08 plus the 0.39 they are under the points limit , so would give them 5.58 to get someone else in, thus allowing Graversen to ride at reserve.

Having said all that i can't see the promotion dropping Kauko, but providing Roynan returns on the form he showed when fully fit last year, i think this would make us stonger overall.

Does anybody know what sort of average that young American Rocco Scopolite would come in on ? As he looked good and could be useful at 2 or reserve. Depending if Peterborough make any changes I have a feeling we may be seeing Fisher soon but would he do more than Kauko ? He didn't have the best of years at Plymouth but riding in the shadow of Barker and trouble with promotion

Crowd was very thin on the ground last night. Clearly the weather wasn't ideal but i'd have said lucky if there were 700. Weather wasn't really too bad though and basically there were just a few spots from around 7.00 onwards. I would have thought the panic buttons were being hit repeatedly with that turn out. But then I guess this is a problem they need to deal with when you ignore the obvious issues with the enternainment served up by the track and rely on the kind of fans who just want to see seven riders turn up on track and get the Lions a win. Not enough of them. Here's hoping the promotion all have deeper pockets than appear on the surface. To me it looks like a stategy that will unravel in a painful way as the season unfolds. Last night the crowd appeared to be made up of the die hard 'Leicester can do no wrong' and then the likes of us 'just can't give it up' brigade. Not enough though people and sooner or later one or other of these elements will probably 'do one' as well, as Liontamer likes to say.

Time for change at Leicester before next weeks league matches start.

For me Nielsen & Karlsson will depart.

I agree, Karlsson, as nice a guy as he seems, isn't the rider he was a couple of years ago and he's changed the dynamic of the team to one similar to last years. Much depends on whether Adam is seriously not too far from a return or not but if he is it's Roynon definately back in for him when available. Nielsen definately needs time away, for his benefit as much as ours. Robert Branford as a short term solution to that problem would appear the best i can come up with so far. Branford was starting to look decentish when he got injured last year and he looked capable round BP. I don't see a solution to getting big reserve points on the board though. That would have been to have had the 2 Lewis's in at reserve but we let that option slip.

I'd say it was more the being knocked out of 2 cups in 2 days, through away performance, aswell as the weather. Most people I know that weren't there didn't believe the meeting would go ahead or didn't want to stand out in the rain for what they called a 'nothing meeting' even though the Lions gave it all they had they had a too bigger mountain to climb...........Just saying :-)..

There's a lot of doom and gloom in the Leicester camp but as an Edinburgh visitor I think the Lions fans should look at their blessings. I enjoyed the trip and I always find the fans, presenters and announcer there very fair. They support their riders but give the visitors a fair crack of the whip as well.

The Leicester team isn't perfect I agree. Both Kauko and Magnus unfortunately seem to be at the same stage, and that isn't heading upwards. You could have one experienced man like that but not two.

I'm not sure what precisely the track changes have been but it isn't far from being a good racetrack. There seems to be more banking now and it looked as though riders might be able to make that work on a drier surface. As for the stadium, most clubs could only dream of having a facility like that.

glad we agree Tina, because i think that's what were doing. I guess without the major element of being entertained by the racing on the track that's what we are reduced to though isn't it? Surely an element of speedway entertainement on track would improve the chances of people turning up to nothing meetings as you describe it when the weather don't look great. You have to surely ask yourself why people don't want to stand out in the rain at BP for a 'nothing meeting'. Do you want me to have a guess as to why that is? With everyone having witnessed the 'best speedway race ever' last week i cannot believe a bit of rain would put them off returning to see more of the same! Particularly with our track record for going ahead in adverse weather. I don't think there was ever a chance the meeting was going to be off.

I went around to the first bend for this weeks meeting and spent the my night with another season ticket holder, the father of a friend of mine. Not spoken to him about speedway at Leicester since we reopened due to us standing at opposite ends of the track but last night he was telling me everyone he knew has the same issues i have with the track. They also have the same worries about some of the amateur mistakes being made, such as the work to the toilets that have left inadequate urinals for fans to use. These things need changing asap.

Maybe it's time to put down the Lion, get out from the cliques and walk about among the actual normal crowd to see what the common Leicester fans think. Not the ones who feel a bond because they go in the bar after the meeting for a drink with the riders and owners or the ones that get a call out from Chris Popple every week or the ones who know someone who son rides in the the juniors, etc, etc, etc. I'm talking about the ones who go to the meetings, watch it, get back in their car and go home at the end. They are the ones Hemsley needs to be worried about.

Volty- You have reminded me of something else about last nights meeting that Popple guy kept plugging the bar last so presume they were hoping to make up some of the lost revenue from the meeting at the bar well that's unless the presenters have got shares in the bar. When I have been in the bar and others have commented that the prices are very high for Speedway but agree is nice atmosphere to mix with fans and riders after the meeting

That applies to every promoter, at every track. Well said.

.

Delusional keeps coming in to my mind.

Somebody is certainly delusional to think we agree.

To be honest it's not so much a speedway meeting as a night out to me with a bit of speedway, what can I say (queue accusations of sad bat), so i'm not sure i've got anything to add to the discussion.

if you look at the four meetings we have had since magnus has been back and not including bonus points the points each rider has scored are as follows

k n 29

l b 33

kd 32

j g 18

m k 33

s n 9

l b 14

i think we can all see where the problem lies but it far to early yet to show any rider the door give them a little longer some riders just need a little bit of time to get going some dont but lets give them the benefit of the doubt for now and see what the next couple of weeks bring.

Wasn't talking about you with regards to being delusional. A bit strong either way though so I have edited that remark from the original post. That said, we are clearly poles apart in what we want out of our speedway and I'm just having a little fun finding tenuous links to say we agree on. There you go though.

One area where we do agree on is the cliques these have grown from the begining and if you aren't in one you aren't worthy and all that claptrap. Childish at best if you ask me

Well said Mike. I said roughly the same as you a couple of weeks ago, and the usual doubters on here though I was taking the p**s. I suppose when some of them are on a mission, what other folks think and see seems to go over their heads. :o

the only reason we thought you were taking the p**s was because some of your points were so far fetched. No disrespect. No mission or anything from me... You just don't need to be so far fetched in what you write in someones defence. You didn't roughly say the same as Mike a couple of weeks ago. That's why nobody has felt the need to respond to Mike thinking he is taking the p**s. I for one don't particularly disagree with him on any of the points he's made. You were mentioning 6Million pound stadium, fantastic new toilets (3 urinals, 1500 crowds), riders who only used the bits of the track that have been altered etc, etc, etc. figure it out.

i am keeping a record of all riders scores for this season and here is my averages for the reserve pairings after 2 official matches this season.

BERWICK (Barrett 8.29 Edberg 5.33), EDINBURGH (Tabaka 8.33 Helfer 2.86), GLASGOW (Jacobs 2.67 Ringwood 2.29) IPSWICH (Heeps 7.56 Ellis 4.44) LEICESTER (Blackbird 5.14 Nielsen 4.33) NEWCASTLE (Kerr 6.40 S Worrall 0.00) PLYMOUTH (Kurtz 7.64 Reade 0.67) REDCAR (Dyer 8.42 Davey 3.00) RYE HOUSE (Lykke 5.43 Lambert 3.11) SCUNTHORPE (Douglas 4.31 Bates 2.46) SHEFFIELD (Knight 8.53 Koppe 2.50) SOMERSET (Nielsen 5.56 Perry 4.89) WORKINGTON (Morris 5.20 Mills 5.14)

So looking at them we have on paper a half decent reserve pairing, so question is why are they not scoring enough points?
