The White Knight
The Bat camera or floating cam as some are calling it is HD but pretty obvious you are not going to get the same quality from a small camera the size of a tube of polos compared to a full 150k broadcast camera with 30k lens on it. I do agree that the timing of use does need a bit of refinement which will happen and it works best in the natural light, in fact at Wolves with its yellow glow floodlights it was just not useable. The live reports from around the tracks will happen when there is other meetings taking place on the same dates and times but will also need good quality mobile coverage as well. I think this sort of thing bodes well for the future of Speedway coverage by SKY. I just hope that a new Contract can be sorted out at the end of the current one. Are there ANY other "HD" sports outside broadcast programmes, for which I'm paying a premium, that involve 4G or even 3G mobile broadband? I doubt you'll need to use both sides of an A4 sheet to list them. As for the toy helicopter - "works better in natural light", so what part of 9pm in April needs to be explained? Robbie B
I would like to also mention that Sky text page 449 also has much coverage of meetings, with more in depth reports then they ever had before. Many thanks for this.
manchesterpaul
Dont think you can compare Nascar to speedway really I think the screen does not suit speedway at all or not as presently used. In what way can you not compare? obviously on blank numbers the population of the US means their stadium attendances, mass media coverage (as in UK severely ignorant of our sport) and TV viewing figures are higher. Totally open question, genuinely interested to know what do you mean by "the screen does not suit speedway at all"!!!?? ok hang on let me add !!!??? and !!!???. The close-ups etc. especially in HD portray the sport as very exciting and the closer you get to view the bucking broncos that the bikes are make one appreciate the rider's skills and lack of fear in controlling such wild beasts (ok admittedly Sky not seen my girlfriend in a strop at me). I would like to also mention that Sky text page 449 also has much coverage of meetings, with more in depth reports then they ever had before. Many thanks for this. Yeah i noticed that the other day. It's similar to how the old nearing extinct printed press referred to the previous days football matches etc. Edited April 20, 2013 by manchesterpaul
flagrag
Backless there are no current sports featured on Sky sports where the coverage is only done using the TV U backpacks they are not designed for that but are being used regular on Sky sports news and Sky news they are ideal for live reports and inserts into programmes. With regards to their use in Speedway I feel that they are working well to give the live updates and interviews and does add value to the coverage, Would people just prefer to have person on the phone giving updates ? Yes the picture quality may not be exactly as good as you will get from a HD sat uplink truck but the cost is so much lower around £1500 cheaper and for Speedway just not justified to use satellite trucks for inserts into the coverage. Most of the reports done this season have not been live and recorded on the EVS system in main OB truck at main meeting to check for quality in case of any problems. As I have stated before we found the coverage varied between Wolverhampton and Belle Vue to signals available and latency also that at present it does not cope very well with racing footage hence why no races have been really shown.
Backless
I didn't ask if footage ONLY came from broadband upload - I asked if there were any other programmes using it. From the comments regarding it use in news report programming, I'll take that to be a "No". What I'm paying for is an HD programme - or as Mr Shouty insists on bellowing "glorious High Definition" - except when Sky are playing with toys & broadband, obviously. Congratulations to Sky though on adopting the average speedway fans' attitude to the sport though: "It may be substandard & a bit rubbish, but its better than nothing so lets just be grateful"
uk_martin
Interesting...some positive comments, some negative comments...well now how about a little competition? There is this free to use web site - https://popcorn.webmaker.org/ - Why not have a game of "Fantasy Speedway TV Producers"? Get your audio and video recordings of the night's action, plonk them into "Popcorn Maker" mix them up the way you like them, post the results online, and we can all share what you think a perfect presentation will be. Maybe we can even have a vote on whose is the best?

Backless
Then cancel your subscription? Pretty simple if you ask me. Much the same as "if you don't like it, don't go" - that has taken the sport to ever-increasing heights of popularity. Brilliant.
