Ruling-speedway Bikes Will Have To Have Brakes Fitted

Recommended Posts

I believe a new handicapping system was proposed at the winter AGM, and only failed by one vote.

During a meeting, each race winner was to receive a 10 pound weight for his next race. Cumulating during the meeting.

Four race wins and it's 40 pounds extra going into the 5th ride.

Apparently the deciding vote came from Glasgow.

Something about Joe Screen, and 4 men needed to lift him onto his bike.

My favourite bit in Malcolm Simmons's book was when he recounts trying to pass Nigel Boocock when Booey suddenley put his left hand up as if he was stopping. Simmo slowed down to avoid him before Booey suddenley opened up and raced into the distance. "I thought you were pulling up," Malcolm opined after the race. "I was just letting you know I was turning left," said Nigel.

I remember Don Wilkinson (Newcastle rider in the early sixties) had a bicycle bell on his bike and he was told in no uncertain terms that it was dangerous and to take it off immediately.

Makes you realise, I guess, that Health & Safety stupidity has been around for longer than we all think.

With the cold weather Speedway has had this year a change has been announced for May 1st.

A pipe will be fitted to the end of the exhaust and will be fed through the bike frame and out of the handle bars, this will reduce the noise and keep the riders hands warm.
