Main Man
After issuing an invitation last week to all 2nd string riders, MDL Grand Prix series organisers Laurence Rogers and Kelvin Lapworth have received a very positive response and now have 8 riders confirmed who will have priority to enter all rounds of the series. "The feedback myself and Laurence have received back from the riders and management alike has been very good and I think this is shaping up to be a very interesting competition. The riders all seem very excited about taking part and with the added incentive of a place in the MDLRC for the series champion I'm sure the racing will be very competitive. The main aim of this competition is to develop the 2nd string riders in the league and by racing against riders of the same standard it will help to boost their confidence which is very important". An extra date the series calendar has been added with Rye House offering to host a round on Saturday 27th July. "Although we have the 8 confirmed priority riders we would still welcome entries from those wishing to be first reserves. Not everyone will be able to ride in every round so there will be plenty of opportunities available". Confirmed Riders 1. Adam Sheppard (Milton Keynes) 2. Lee Springthorpe (Stoke) 3. Freddie Owen (Stoke) 4. Danno Verge (Milton Keynes) 5. Conor Mountain (Kings Lynn) 6. Nick Mallett (Coventry-Mercia) 7. James Shanes (Coventry-Mercia) 8. Haydon Ball (Long Eaton)

John Leslie
so when did Nick Mallett become a second string ?? Agree. Bit of a joke having him in a Youth Development GP for young grassroots riders, surely there is a more suitable candidate

John Leslie
So, everybody's favourite failed ex-promoter Nicky Mallet provides a few racejackets and buys his way into a junior youth development competition for which he is in no way qualified? Smells a bit bent and mickey mouse.

John Leslie
TBF, you've not experienced the sport of speedway until you've paid to watch Nick Mallett ride Thing is, we did experience him trying to ride about 10 years ago, then we experienced him trying to promote. (not to mention trying to diet). So why is this man now trying to take candy from babies in a competition which is supposed to be for lower end youth development riders? Thing is, unless he has improved 10 fold since his last riding days, Candy from a baby it will not be! I see your point but I prefer to see it as, "why persevere with someone who failed so badly 10 years ago and is not going to make it as a speedway rider, even at NL level, while I have a hole in my backside"
paul90210
Nick Mallet was brought into the Coventry Mercia Vikings to replace Paul Quarterman who is to miss the entire season due to injury. He is there as an experienced head out on the track to give the youngsters some assistance when racing. He is also hell bent on proving that he is not a spent force on a bike, and is aiming for the national league, which is what the MDL is all about. And he is a 2nd string due to the fact that he is not currently riding in the National league, which makes him eligable for the MDL grand prix. Make your mind up , first he is experienced then he is a second string !!! you know as well as everyone else this competition was for second strings and the only reason he is in it is because of who his friends are , I suppose you wonder why Scunthorpe and Sheffield don't want to take part in the MDL any more !! paul90210
so following your logic then, anyone who is experienced is not classed as a 2nd string? so for instance simon stead wouldn't be classed as a 2nd string? John Leslie
so for instance simon stead wouldn't be classed as a 2nd string? Don't think Simon Stead would be allowed in the Midland Development League at all, either as second string or heat-leader

I dont normally bother with the forum these days Simon but i wanted to put you right on your post here. Nick Mallett- It was actually myself that made the call to Nick and asked him to ride for the Vikings and not his "mate" as you put it. I have always got pn with Nick and found him very helpfull when we ran the Scandinavian touring team a few years ago. He has assured me of his commitment and is a very popular figure with his team mates which will boost team morale. Sheffield - Have taken a 1 year break from the MDL in order to give their new PL riders extra track time to practice after meetings with ehat limited time they have available. Scunthorpe - Have decided not to run the stags as they have limited dates available to run 2 MDL teams. They will also be staging NL/MDL style 15 heat meetings. I think one is best to know the full facts before making assumptions
