Workington V Newcastle 30 March 2013

Recommended Posts

Just to get things moving, 10 days to go. Ian Thomas RIP ran both clubs well and it is fitting that our clubs contest the Ian Thomas Shield. Let's hope this wintery weather is out of the way by the end of the month

There are spare seats on the special Newcastle coach to Worky on Saturday. Check out the situation on the Newcastle website. Remember it is only £5 per seat.

Announced that it is R/R for both legs in place of Tully.

I ain't travelling for this one but a charge of a fiver Newcastle to Workington return is very good value. It will easily cost far more in petrol to get to Cumbria and back.

How come the reciprocal coach Worky to Newcastle on Sunday is free? Who is footing the bill for that? Good deal for the Comets fans I hope you fill your coach as we need your cash through our turnstiles at Brough Park.

This is a match that I think is impossible to forecast a score for. Andrew Tully may have hard shoes to fill (well! he is a big lad isn't he?) R/R for Andrew at least gives 4 of our lads another race each on the opening night of the season and the same tomorrow it all helps to blow away the cobwebs.

If pressed for the score I will say a last heat decider and both sides could win it in heat 15

Bitterly cold night, some slow times , the track was a bit rough in parts early on and caught a few of the riders out, meeting dragged on for far too long hopefully future meets can be slicker and this was just a one off.

Star rider of the night was probably Stuart Robson but even he was passed in a heat by Rusty and Kyle, hope Tero is ok after a nasty fall.

how many people noticed that the track is now smaller with the rugny pitch being wider

what about the famous face tonight non other than 19 times tt winner and lap record holder john mcguinness

he was in the pits before the meeting with peter carr

by the way i thought the track was very poor tonight but start of season it usualy is

would also like to say i thought lewis kerr looked much better than the points he scored unlike some of the other riders he was always tying hard

The new promotion is footing the bill and there are two coaches, a whole 98 of us.

that is fantastic and you will have more that have come by car. Brough Park is having work done on the covered terrace steps which are out of bounds to us all. So all the fans will be out in the open (the bar is unaffected however) lower down near the greyhound track, hope is doesn't rain as we will have nowhere to run to

Howarth and rusty were our star men. sad that Tero got injured :-(

I see Kyle at Swindon on Thursday for Poole was well impressed quick think he will have a big year for the comets!

Congrats to the new promotion for all their efforts last night, to promote their first meeting.

There was a nice feeling about the meeting with a big crowd in, possibly 2000.

A new Scot on the presentation mike, who sounded very like Scot Wilson of Edinburgh but it wasn't

Scot Nichols with bike outside having pictures taken free of charge.

Band playing alongside Scot outside.

Programme sheet for everyone, in addition to the pay programmes with full reports and adverts.

Free bag of sweeties for all the kids(but not Senior citizens :P )

Two very good girl singers on the centre green, singing three popular songs, although it was that cold that a few thought they should have got on with the racing.

Big improvements by the rugby club in terms of carparks and tidiness around the stadium, including new popup seats in the main stand.

Pleased to see the number and the variety of sponsors banners around the first and second bend. Someone has been very busy and got things right.

Scot Nichols booked at a considerable fee for greeting and three match races.

New track shop in outside container

Lots and lots of positives, including the absence of the usual evil element in the backstraight stand.

Unfortunately the big disappointment was the track. Looked OK in the first and second heat but after that it was breaking up and was treacherous, especially the third/forth bend. By the middle of the meeting most rider, with the odd exception, were two wheeling into the third bend and the winner of heat 14 was about 7 seconds slower than the first heat time. Riders sliding into the first bend(cue Lindgren) were fighting to combat the ripples to stay on. Everyone was wary about full throttle on the forth bend as they were drifting into the fence, and Rene dropped it there in the lead in his first ride. After that most riders played safe and just held position. The weather did play a part, especially when the frost came in the last couple of heats, but the real damage was a bad track before that, and all riders insisted on the track being graded after every two races. Severe grading later on when the two tractors virtually remade the third/forth bend, but one got the impression that the two drivers were working to different scripts.

Just pleased that the riders were OK after the meeting, except Teo, who ran into the side of a rider, was clipped by Lawson, and excluded for his move. A bad shoulder and I gather he will miss tonight's meeting at Brough as a precaution.

The two other match races were sensibly scrapped, and for those usual culprits( hiya Davidj) who usually, and predictably, have a go at the Newcastle track, ask yourself why allegedly 4 riders refused rides in heat 15 for the Comets.

A good first meeting for the new promotion and I wish them all the success, and hopefully fill the stadium like last night.

A good start for the Diamonds with some good rides, with a lot of promise from Lewis Kerr, well done.

A bad Hi, Newcastle p&p today/nite and tully had crashed on bend 4 ended up wid broken vertebrae and more crashes on bend 3 I don't want our lads to go over there on Sunday , bloody usual death trap ! Xx I gather he will miss tonight's meeting at Brough as a precaution.

Think Davidj is on hols , haha! Maybe as it was nearly 10 o clock at night minus 1 degrees and the track starting to freeze over , but hey don't let facts get in the way lets see what delights await us over on Rough Park in a couple of hours ! Lord help us

I heard Davidj is away on hols
