Ipswich Vs Rye House March 29th 2.30pm

While I'm very much looking forward to seeing the season start proper tomorrow I'm mindful of how cold it was at the Ben Fund meet at Berwick. Not gonna turn up until the last minute. Don't wanna spend any more time than necessary out in the cold. Bleedin weather!

8.25 am and the sun is out with the temp at a balmy 34.

Certainly the nicest day we've had for ages. That horrible Easterly wind has gone, but probably too late to encourage fans to Foxhall this afternoon, it's been so bloody cold all week, i reckon the "once a season" brigade will have found something warmer to do. It's a shame, after last year when most promoters took a hit, this is all they needed, first 2-3 weeks of the season with the cold keeping fans away.

some tracks do not deserve to get supporters in - just phoned track (10-30) - guess what NO REPLY - wonder how many other potential travellers will be put off?

Perhaps its all hands to the pumps to try to ensure the best possible show.

Given the weather of the last couple of days Id say there is not doubt its on.

Just needs lots of layers and plenty of hot refreshment and hopefully some hot racing.

The wind is still from the north east, you must be in a sheltered spot spanner. Been out with the dogs and its still a freezing wind, although not as strong. Hope they run a slick presentation today.

Lets do a head to head of the 1-7's

1 Barker v Allen - Barker, any track, anywhere - Barker should outscore Allen.

2 Makinen v Bunyan - Bunyan may edge this through experience, Makinen may need a few meetings to settle in at his new home.

3 Tungate v Mellgren - Tungate, nothing more needs to be said.

4 Risager v Garrity - Could go either way. I'll put this as a draw.

5 Lanham v Nelson - Lanham, if it's not then it's going to be a long season!

6 Ellis v Lykke - I'd give it to Lykke, Ellis is no doubt a talent and has a big future but Lykke is already a step or two ahead at the moment.

7 Heeps v Lambert - Hopefully Heeps but it's been a long time since he raced Foxhall, could go either way.

So I make it Ipswich 3, Rye 2 and 2 drawn.

Could be closer than some think but my opinion is that the Witches should win by 15 or so some 5pm today.

It's been on Twitter and Facebook that the meeting is on - with pictures of the track in tip top condition, maybe the people at the track are working on the track - just because nobody has answered the phone doesn't mean that's the only way to find out information.

Well , I know the lads havnt been able to practice but what a poor performance ? In my opinion anyway .

Barker , double figures as expected

Makinnen , shocking as expected

Tungate , Chipped in but never looked like passing anyone

Risager , didn't look good

Lanham , looked slow to me

Ellis , got his 3 pts , needs to find his feet

Heeps , superb , only reason we won

Buts it's all about opinions I suppose !

Just about warm now after one of the coldest Foxhall meetings in living memory. The easterly wind just doesn't let up and the wind chill must have been -6C at least.

Barker & Heeps the stars of the show for the Witches. Great to see the fans responding to Barker after the last heat - he was really playing to the crowd on the back straight.

Rye House must be pleased with their first meeting - Allen looked happy, and their stars were Mellgren & Garrity - with Nelson also looking very competitive and not at all worried by the #5 race jacket.

I spoke to Leigh Lanham afterwards - he was pleased to have got the win with that last heat 5-1, and was full of praise for Barker. Lanham himself was struggling with race fitness - he did 20 laps at KL on Thursday, but that was the first time he had sat on a bike since last season. He also admitted the cock-up in 13 when he and Barker tried to team ride, but Barker got stuck out wide - then Lanham said he thought it was Barker behind him when it was Allen, who sailed past to take the win. Overall he was happy considering few of the riders had had any laps, let alone competitive racing. Also gave big credit to Bob and the track staff, who produced a raceable track even though it was under snow on Monday. The full interview will be on the Rerun DVD :).

Will you be there tomorrow? I'll probably know you are when you see the new programme, and I hear your scream,.

Did you hear mine when it wouldn't fit in my programme folder. Why the extra size? I was frawn of cold, must have been the coldest ever. Sat in the 'new' stand. Excellent viewing and will be good when the next lot go in as mentioned by the presenter. Nice to see all the other building going on, with the bricky working on bank holiday. Not bad for a first meeting, all the lads deserve a chance to show their worth but for some improvment is a must. Plymouth look stronger than Rye on paper so next thursday will be interesting.

Bitterly cold as expected. The Ipswich fans prediction of a comfortable home win was way off the mark. Inside gates in heat 15 and Barkers superb team riding as Allen looked like passing Lanham were the difference. Gate 4 is a nightmare at Foxhall.

Difficult to judge riders on one meeting after a long winter. It's gonna take a few meetings for them to settle down, but I was happy with how smoothly Nelson adapted after a year out of British speedway. The top 5 in general look good, reserves not so, but it's early days.

Highlights were Olly Allen's ride in heat 13 and Barkers team riding in 15. Special mention to young Adam Ellis who posted a decent time in a comfortable heat 2 win.

My second meeting of the season and first "incident" with a home supporter... Oh dear!

Grrr my post just dissapered  Oh well in the short, freeeeezzzing cold, Huge crowd went home happier after a win by superb Barker team riding, not once but twice and a mess up in heat 13. Gate 4 only scored 10+2, so worse than Western Springs and outside line non existant on track that rode smooth but did well to get meeting on after weather.

Barker - "only" scored 12 but worth much more than that. Made it look so easy.

Makinen - gates well but struggled with first bends, going far too wide.

Tungate - picked up after 1st ride, went chasing an outside pass into 2nd but went backwards

Risager - For an "inside line rider" didn't do too well. Early days.

Lanham - Got slower as the race went on, probably due to fitness. Nasty tumble in 2nd heat when Lambert forgot to turn!

Ellis - Superb gate and go in heat 2 but struggle with track/bike when off outside gates.

Heeps - Looks a better rider than last year, slightly difference style that allows bike getting good drive off the corners. Had nasty fall where it looked as though he banged his arm/wrist/hand.

Onwards and upwards though, its early days. much better position than the Rye meeting last year!

I know it's only first meeting, but that was pretty poor, all the riders I expected to poor were, that's all I'm going to say until I see what happens Monday

These early season meetings can throw up all kinds of wonky results,I think Ipswich have a good team and once things settle down they will be up with the front runners.
