I see that the results are already out, so I wont type them now... A decent meeting, not a lot of passing if you neglect Kylmä's heats when he missed the gate and picked them up one by one. Very difficult conditions for track prep with clear sky, 20-30+ celsius through out the week and Pilvenmäki has always been a tricky track to prepare with a thin top layer of material. Was told that 80 000 liters of water went in to the track the night before. The dust was a problem at times, but I think they did a very good job by keeping it to a minimum/as minimum as possible. That naturally came with a cost, and that was 4h 33 minutes of entertainment, that at times was not so entertaining. Franc outgated Kylmä in the final after Kylmä had won a ballot for the gate pick since they were tied after the semis with a similar record. In the semis blue was first choice but in the final Kylmä took red having won the ballot. That cost him since Franc cut in front and Kylmä had to start the backstraight while 4th. He picked them up one by one and was second on the last backstraight with Smolinski 3rd battiling with Tebbe until Smolis engine gave up on the last lap. I was waiting for an interview from Smoli for maybe 10 minutes or so while he was giving feedback to his crew after the meeting. I got the impression it was good that " My Deutsch sind nicht zu gut" oder something like that. = ) Phillips did not impress, I've always liked him for some reason but this time he was poor. Woodward even won a heat but like he said, the 1000 meter tracks are still a mystery and a steep learning curve for him. Mustonen had engine problems, but when on his own top gear, he was fast. Only one crash this time, when EDIT: Pijper slid off on the second lap in turns 1 and 2 and Speiser run over him. Both were OK but later on I discovered that EDIT: Pijper had a huge burn on his ärse and Speiser looked (and said it too) in pain after the meeting. I also spoke with Ilkka Teromaa about the new proposed rule regarding leather racing suits. First he said he's not quite on the ball in this subject, but then made a good remark that it's not necessarily about returning back to leather as we once knew it, but to materials that can withstand friction caused heat better than the plastic based materials we have now.

I see that it has been reported (in both Speedway Star and Tygodnik Zuzlowy) that Joonas Kylmakorpi took part in the semi-final of the SWEDISH championship at Hallstavik on July 10, scoring 7 points.

What's that all about?

Is he riding on a Swedish licence?

I was taking a longer break last week, roasting my ärse in Podstrana/Split/Croatia (and loving it!) and now having some ctaching up with the important meetings on the calendar. The 24th U21 final was ridden last sat at Varkaus. Timo Lahti won taking his 5th consecutive title in the juniors. The Laahti brothers managed 12 medals in the U21's between 2004-2013 with seven of them being #1's.

Speedwayn SM-liiga, ottelu 8

Hyvinkää (HyMK) 20.8.2013

What started out as a dullfest came alive in heat 11 when Siltaniemi beat Hautamäki in an excellent duel. Really hard racing both ways. SB needed and 8 point win over Kotkat to win the title and they were 16-15 for Kotkat after 7, then 29-22 for SB after 13. Crucial 5-1 for Kotkat over SB in heat 17 sealed the deal. Interesting start in heat 12 when Tero Aarnio hit the tapes when the green light was on and the heat was called back all4back due to an unsatisfactory start.

The Hyvinkää track is at the moment actually a clay/shale track. It was pretty good, great to have this meeting as a test for Saturdays Finnish final at the same track.

Juha Hautamäki is the new Finnish champion beating Marko Suojanen and Tero Aarnio in that order for the title. Jesse Mustonen repeated his brothers achievement and lead after 20 heats. Niko Siltaniemi gated in the semi trying to run Aarnio wide leaving a gap for Suojanen on the inside. Suojanen took it and and wiped Niko almost off his bike. Niko decided to stay up and finished 3rd with Suojanen and Aarnio progressing to the final. In the final Suojanen gated with Hautamäki on the inside. First backstraight Aarnio came from between them and turned 2nd in to the bend. Second lap hautamäki started his outside run and first passed aarnio and then suojanen to take his fourth title.

Very interesting to see these. Would have been even better if the camera had a zoom button.

probably taken with a cellphone without too much planning. The move by Aarnio looks quite lame on the video, it was really special seen live. Also Suojanens move in the semi cant really be seen on the video, Siltaniemi had a good wobble after they touched. Edited by f-s-p
