Speedway On Eurosport

Shambolic ... switched it off after 3 heats. Having waited from over an hour from 6pm to 7.20pm because of Polish Eurosport covering a two bob tennis match and then jumping into the speedway at heat 5/6 was a complete shambles. This was only enhanced when they broke for ads only to come back halfway through ht 9 .. From those few heats the meeting didnt look great so I switched off.

Generally been fairly impressed with Eurosport coverage but last night was utter gash.

No it's not better to do without. Unless of course you don't really like speedway.

Myself, I like speedway.

I'm not complaining about the actual racing, ok it was rubbish - a put-up, meaningless meeting, it's the poor production that i object to. It's doing nothing for speedway and it's going to turn people away from the sport. if your happy with watching a third rate production ok. It's your license fee....(or not).

How would you know what the racing was like, you turned off after 20 mins.

My point is, that turning off just because you don't like the presentation, is a bit like turning off because you didn't like the colour of MJJ's kevlars.

I think too many moaners here aspire to some unreachable Speedway nirvana and will never be satisfied.

What I saw was enough. 1st five heats missing, Zagar riding for Czecho, missing start, terrible sound, canned studio commentary from a numpty (scotty excepted). I expect a more professional package rather than the usual Eurosport anything will do. The sport deserves better.

i think most of them are just pricks.

Is it not time for your paper round?

For 14 years SKY have given us live speedway coverage. Let them make one mistake and the speedway perfectionists are onto it in a dash. But... no, no, no. A terrible attempt by Eurosport to throw together a night’s live speedway... and, in this day and age an’ all, there is some people actually defending their ineptitude.

Please, Eurosport, if that is the best you can do, stay clear away. The channel has not improved much in 20 years, if any, which is similar in duration that the Pairs competition has been away.

Let us hope it is another 20 years before they discover it again.

People praising Eurosport must be frightened that speedway won’t be on their screens next season and are desperate for this amateurish network to scoop it up.

Some of their trailers and adverts are good though; just I feel that’s blown the budget.

Agreed.

All they need to do is go and watch it live.

Scoop up what? The Elite League. Well, if Sky were to pull out and Eurosport were the only viable alternative then you bet I would be happy for them to pick it up. Especially when it means I could dump my expensive Sky Sports subscription.

It's ok to go on about Sky but they passed up the opportunity to show the GPs this season and, as a result, many suspect they will not pick up the EL rights when they are up at the end of the year. I suspect, had Eurosport not been interested in showing the GP's we would be faced with looking towards the internet to view our showpiece event. Should Sky not renew EL coverage next year, if Eurosport put in a bid for the Elite League then I would welcome this with open arms. Anyway, if they did, perhaps they would simply employ the same company Sky use to produce their shows.

To be honest, I thought Eurosport's coverage of Cardiff was far from 'amateurish'. In my opinion it was better than anything Sky produced from the Millennium Stadium in their last 12 attempts. Sure, it's essentially the world feed they used, but their relaxed yet enthusiastic style, operating from trackside rather than a stale 'studio' (a box within the stadium) came across very well.

I think certain people live in this dreamworld where they see speedway as being a sport which broadcasters are queuing up to televise. To all of the posters having a pop at Eurosport, perhaps they might want to provide a list of viable alternate tv companies who are lining up to televise our sport (at domestic, GP or international level).

We do need to be grateful for what we have got because, I suspect, next year we will have significantly less.

I do watch speedway live, and funnily enough, when I do I don't expect lavish production with fireworks, caviar and peeled grapes fed to me by nubile virgins.

It might be a bit contoversial, but I usually go to enjoy the racing.

Ridiculous statement. I watch my team live but am hardly likely to travel down to Poole to watch Birmingham this week. However, I am interested in watching it on TV despite not supporting either team.

If we were to take that attitude to its logical conclusion then there would be no televised sport at all!

Without focusing too much on Europsort's obvious weaknesses, what says this about allowing a "guest" in an international event? My interest began moving off the sofa as soon as I noticed that. On the other hand, perhaps Team GB will have a better chance of some silverware if guests are permitted.

My understanding of Eurosport is that they don't actually do any filming themselves and that SKY tv do actually film the EL themselves. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

If this is so I can't see Eurosport taking the EL as they have no filming capabilities.

Ditto, as soon as a saw that i started looking at the planner.

Credit where credit is due,Eurosport did have to have commentators in many various languages around Europe.Big task.Sky on the other hand just had to have some english commentators and buggered that up with Ermolenko and the odd(very odd sometimes)interview with Bomber Harris

The line-up last night included some of the best speedway riders in the world, many of whom we can't get to see live in this country.

And still there were thos who switched off after 20mins - it just beggars beleif to me that any speedway fan would do that.

I've sat and watched some pretty crap GPs and league matches on Sky over the years but mostly I've stuck with them. In the main Sky coverage was pretty professional. Even when they had Millard commentating from a studio in London the sound of the bikes and atmosphere came thro' from the track but Eurosport make no effort to get it right. As for over running, under running they do the same with everything that they cover it's as if anything will do. No they are poor broadcasters.

Why is it a big task? You only need a bloke in a box with a mic talking over the feed. It's not rocket science.
