Bagpuss
There was a poster for Newcastle Speedway on Byker Grove about 15 years ago as well. I'd normally say it's not relevant as it's so old but it's more current than One a Jolly Swagman :/ Pretty sure there was some racing shown too, seem to remember recognising Mark Thorpe during the clips. So presumably early nineties? Edited January 27, 2013 by Bagpuss
Gemini
Pretty sure actor Adam Rickett - ex Coronation Street - broke his leg trying speedway but I can't remember if he was being filmed for a programme or not.

Definitely not Adam Rickett. It was someone with an Eastenders connection. Think Gary Havelock was involved. Maybe Sean Maguire who was in Grange Hill and went on to Eastenders?

SCB
No, i was talking about an irrelevant poster in the background, the kind of thing only a geeky speedway fan would notice! Like Hayley Croppers Stoke Speedway sticker in the back of her car (where do the people of Coronation Street keep their cars, as they're never on the road :/)

I could 'see' his face but obviously got the wrong name as I don't watch Eastenders. I think I've got the newspaper cutting somewhere in one of my seven speedway scrapbooks. Are you sure you don't mean Sean Maguire?? I believe he was having a go after a meeting on Simon Wigg's bike?? and came off and broke his leg....not sure what track it was at though.....I think it was about the time of the Ricky Butcher speedway story on Eastenders and a few of the actors started having a go at speedway?? When he broke his leg the tv bosses put a stop to it?? I think that was it.....long time ago now, so not 100% sure. DAVEK
Watched the film last night. Interesting comment that Dirk Bogarde (as a top rider) stated he earned £90 per week which is equivalent to £1500 in todays money. Nothing extortionate, but they were getting crowds of up to 30,000. I bet today's promoters wish they could go back 60 years in time

Ray Stadia
A bit off subject, but still speedway on TV (sort of thing) and have found 'Speedway Liga-PC Gameplay', I haven't heard of it before, but no doubt many of you have. I was impressed with the Youtube demo! Pretty realistic, what I saw.
Vince
According to Hansards average wage for a manual worker was £3 9s in 1939 so round it up to £3.50 and you are talking over 25 times that. Struggled to find a recent average wage for manual workers but the overall average is £26k so if we assume 20 which is near as £400 week as makes no difference that would make the rate today well over £10,000 week riding for one team who supplied a mechanic to look after your bike in their workshop. Apparently that is nearly as much as some NL riders!!
iris123
Bit of an obscure one coming up on German tv saturday night.Egon Müller in a murder mystery. And no i don't think he was murdered for singing!!!!An episode of a series from 1989 where Egon appears as speedway rider "Tonio" and has a fatal crash on track.Seems his sponsor is mixed up in this somehow NDR 22:15 british time if anyone is interested Edited April 25, 2013 by iris123

I wouldn't seek it out at all if it didn't include speedway in it, but i may try and catch it or set it to record it from my computer screen. I just clicked on an old link on my computer and cool it still connects to a live NDR stream. There may be others but that one is working for me. It will all depend on if the streaming service is live 24 hours. Most tv channel online streamers tend only to go off air when live sports rights issues are involved, so it should be good to go. http://www.ndr.de/fernsehen/livestream223.html A bit off subject, but still speedway on TV (sort of thing) and have found 'Speedway Liga-PC Gameplay', I haven't heard of it before, but no doubt many of you have. I was impressed with the Youtube demo! Pretty realistic, what I saw. William Hill and other online bookmakers provide 24 hour 'Virtual Speedway' with a race every ten minutes or so - nooooo i don't bet on them lol. The rider names are often quite funny, some of them a play on real riders. The race 'commentators' are slightly animated at times, way less than Pearson and Tatum you'll be glad to hear, and the size of the crowds are very good too! I think promoters shoud ask them how they manage to achieve such good attendance figures. Uh Oh maybe it's because you can bet on the races eeeek! Brian Buck
I once saw a very poor quality clip of a film called "Britannia of Billingsgate" which included some speedway and was apparently shot at the old Lea Bridge track in 1934. The story seemed a bit bizzare and the clip I saw had a rider lose control, crash through the safety fence and ride up the terraces and into the bar!
