Christmas Cracker - Now 8th Feb, 7pm @ Somerset

Recommended Posts

I agree. Well done on the early call off but having the re-staging on a Friday evening when everyone is back at work seems like a strange decision. Is it the case that the OTA only has permission to run on Fridays because otherwise, in terms of crowd numbers, surely a weekend date would have been better?

Either way, unfortunately there's no way I will be going to the re-staging. Belting it down to Somerset straight after work on a cold Friday evening for a fix of speedway simply has less appeal than taking a leisurely trip down there on a day off over the Christmas period or going during a weekend and making a bit of a day of it.

Yes, unfortunately the terms of our planning only allow Somerset to run on Friday nights or 6 'off nights' during the year but not on a Saturday or Sunday, nor a Bank Holiday.

So we have a meeting in January, called the Christmas cracker on a friday night when a lot of people will be at work and the weather getting colder.

Needs a re-think.

The fact is that Somerset can only run on a Friday, with the exception of 6 off nights permitted by planning (which are obviously reserved for the season proper). Im sure theyd love to run it on a Saturday or Sunday but they cant so thats that some people will make it some wont (same as any Friday away meeting during the season). As far as the name goes you could call it The Easter Extravaganza for all I care, it's still a meeting in the off season that nobody else wanted to run.

Looking forward to the 18th and a few bevys with people I wouldn't otherwise see until March, hope you can make it.

'We' ?? Don't you mean 'You' ?

For another £1.50 many people (not everyone obviously) want a good read not just a race card

Yes you may be correct Hurricanes, however it was obvious last season that many people did not have a programme, presumably to save costs. Also if you want a good speedway read there is vastly more content in The Speedway Star at £2-80 than the programme at £2-50. Perhaps next seasons programme will be cheaper?

Its the same as this week, you cant plan to go to a meeting when you have know idea if it will be on, you decide on the day.

Ill have to wait and see what the weather is and if I want to book holiday for this meeting or go and see my own team race away later in the season.

To be quite frank, I was on the point of not coming anyway, I wanted to watch speedway not go to a fun fair or watch the boring old blokes follow each other around.

Personally speaking, I think it's a real shame that Poole only ran one of these off season meetings. It was by far the best off-season meeting I attended. A great line up, a well prepared track and (as far as I recall) a good crowd.

I'm actually quite surprised this is being re-staged. Fair play for Somerset for having a go at putting an off-season meeting on (especially if what Pirate Nick says is true and no-one else wanted to run one). However I think the fact that they are forced to run Friday evening and that they have now missed the one Friday of the off season where many people are off work may work against them in terms of crowd numbers.

Hopefully enough travelling fans will be able to go, and I'm sure the locals will turn out in force, so hopefully this will ensure the event is still a success for them.

Yes it was a very good meeting back in 09. The track was prepared as you saw it. No water was added at all because the pipes were frozen up. :D Just Graded.

But it proved, you don't need a real top class field to get good racing. I felt a little sorry for Adam Skcorniki who lost out on the very last bend to Ben Barkers pass, he'd rode well all afternoon. But it was a very good meeting with a good crowd and plenty of passing. SPEEDWAY!!!

... or the alternative is you watch your first meeting in March - you decide.

It may not be an option.

I used all my holiday at Christmas, and Norfolk to Somerset with a 5pm finish isn't going to happen. It's a shame, as I was looking forward to visiting Somerset for the first time, but nothing I can do about it. Maybe I'll make it down sometime.
