msc1874
I don't think anyone can dispute the good that Sky TV has brought to British Elite League Speedway, however it's kind of frustrating for me that we only get a once in a blue moon PL match on sky. We as PL fans are being left behind, money wise with the EL clubs and exposure wise to new audiences who may tune in. Why can't sky run a highlights package from PL matches on say a weekly basis. I mean most matches are filmed. If sky won't is there anything stopping the PL from approaching say BBC, ESPN, Channel 5 etc to do this. I think if people saw more of what our league offered it may put more bums in seats so to speak. I think our league is marketed extremely poorly. We are not selling what at times is a really strong product to a wide enough audience. I get sick at times when the commentators on Sky at times talk about our league like its vastly inferior. Riders who double up on a part time basis in EL are only ever credited as Riders of their EL clubs, and well maybe that's me being a tad picky but hey. I just feel our League is being left way behind, I can watch British ice hockey, touring cars, road racing on tv on a weekly basis. Why can't I watch PL speedway?

Whilst I support your sentiments :- 1. the EL is superior to the PL in the 3 league structure 2. The sports you mention, you only see the best of those sports, not junior leagues or club events. In the case of Ice Hockey, we see their EL which, like Speedway, has about 10 teams and shares most of Speedway faults. I think only in Football do you have dedicated programmes in lower leagues such as the Championship League.

lionking
What annoys me about PL racing on sky last season 2 matches both the same match Ipswich vs Somerset. Why not be fair and visit other tracks that provide much better racing ( i don't mean Leicester before anyone says racing is awful there)

msc1874
I think PL offers a range of tracks, teams and fixtures. Great racing and some riders are heat leaders in both leagues. There are more PL fans as there are more PL teams. Are you telling me there is not an audience out there. Sky and the EL get boring, same teams boring.
A ORLOV
It did seem strange that sky showed the same two teams twice when they could have shown other teams. In 2011 the PL meetings shown were better than most of the EL meetings, and I had hoped that more PL would be shown this year. When does the current arrangement for tv rights end, maybe the PL should try and get its public display rights separate to the EL, unless the money it receives from the EL deal is more than it could raise itself. Or is it the case that the powers that be cannot split the rights up, which seems a bit short sighted. There should be a separate agreement for the PL even if it is with the same broadcasting organisation. You are right with what you say in the rest of your Post too - BUT, and it is a big but - I understand Gospeed own the Television Rights for ALL Speedway in this Country. Basically SKY 'cherry pick' the Elite League (in their opinion) and I'm afraid the rest of the Teams/Leagues don't matter.

jenga
i am not one to spread rumours, but.. hears sky sports are giving up speedway and all meetings are being shown on premier sports channel on SKY so maybe a small saving there if you only want to watch speedway..inc overseas meets... just a rumour mind.. bigeddiechek
If the powers who hold the rights really want speedway to survive in the UK, they really have to think about some kind of TV deal - however small - that can assist the clubs. Even £10k per club each year could make a huge difference?
BWitcher
You've got to love threads like this. Constantly we hear how great the PL is, how wonderful the product is, how marvelous the variety is, how fantastic the tracks are, how amazing the racing is. All these PL clubs must be racing in front of packed out crowds and the promoters making a fortune!

StormMarketing
Nobody will pay to screen LIVE domestic speedway anymore, if anything Go Speed would have to pay a broadcaster to take it or offer it for free.

Perhaps the reason for the Premier League Supporters singing it's praises is because you see decent Racing most of the time. You see all four Riders trying to win - whereas - in the Elite League you quite often see TWO Riders Racing for the Win and TWO Riders racing for Third Place. Usually the two racing for the Third Place are Premier League Riders anyway. There IS more variety in the Premier League - there are more Tracks - so that fact is self evident. As for Crowds - well Speedway is suffering a general malaise at present. Support is falling in ALL Leagues. Not at all Tracks though. Unless, of course, SKY Television is there. You have to laugh ,only in the are Pl riders are trying to win ..where in the El once a rider hits the front he thinks i better drop back to last as i am not trying to win .
