freddyfivetoes
Firstly, 4TT qualifiers are an absolute must. Some hate them but most love them... They bring the crowds flooding in and is something different in a meaningful competition. It also brings some kind of respect back to the 4TT finals which were a highlight of a season in years gone by. Sorry, but although popular with northern fans (although exactly which four from six teams you'd want in "your" group might be a cause for discussion) 4TT qualifiers mean financial suicide for the rest of the league. Plymouth (for instance would have to pay for three away meeting' travel and points top-up) on the strength of one home "gate" -- and how many travellers from, I'd guess Rye House, Somerset and, er, Ipswich would turn up in Devon for that leg? Genuine questions. Is the 'home' promoter responsible for the travel costs of visitors, or only the basic points money? Also, would the travel costs for Plymouth riders not be the cost from their home base to, for example, Ipswich, rather than from Plymouth to Ipswich? Home teams only pay away team travel if the meeting is called off and they have set off. The away team submits their mileage and of course most folks know where they started out from, and not from their home track location. As Chewwie says only 4 in a team with 1 reserve, so 20 riders in total to pay for.
ShadowCaptain
Thanks for that, Dave. So, the Plymouth promotion would pay the cost of five riders for three away matches, which is fifteen journeys, or the approximate equivalent of two away matches to be paid for by the home leg of the qualifier. It is extra expense, and there is an extra heat, but the 4TT usually provides really good racing, hopefully enough, WITH PROPER PUBLICITY to attract an increased crowd to cover the increased cost.
