Watching the Brum-Swindon match in a local pub in the town, got chatting to a guy who said he rode as number 6 for Poole in 1976. Anyone have any info on Mr. Phil Smith, a Swindon-born rider for the Dorset side who had to retire because of injury?

There is a Pete Smith listed here for 76 and 77 http://www.poolespeedway.info/1976_-_2012.html

Pete Smith rode for Poole for many years- on reflection different person i think.

I'm sure this geezer said he was Phil, number 6 in 76 and 77 for Poole, and retired from Reading in 78?. Perhaps he was telling porkies? Walked like a speedway rider though, with that pronounced limp that many have, may be living a double life!

Nope, never heard of him.

The bloke is living a double life, a parcel delivery driver by day, and a pretend ex-speedway rider at night. Was probably an ex-para as well! :drink:

I used to work with a guy from Chippenham(well i think he originally came from somewhere near Sutton)and sometimes in our breaks when the opportunity arose he would lean back, put his hands behind his head and let out a knowing groan before starting off with"The best feeling i ever had was running out onto that pitch at Wembley....."and telling anyone in the room about the times he played in goal for England schoolboys.Someone told me at one stage he had played in a works football tournament and was rubbish,so i wrote a letter off to the FA asking for details.I got a nice reply on FA headed paper saying that no-one with that surname had ever played for England at any level.I carried it around with me and told a couple of colleagues about it,but i think one must have tipped him off because from that day on he never once told the story in my presence......... :icon_smile_clown:

I was a heatleader for Poole from 1975 to 1981, winning two world championships during that time and also riding for Great Britain in the World Team Cup. I certainly don't remember anyone of that name being in my team at that time. The man is clearly a charlatan.

May have still been paraletic... know a few people who deckchair talk when they've had a few.

Hiccup.

More like para-limpian...paraletic and limping.

Yes but I know you are for real though...but this guy is a bare-faced liar, a charlatan from Charlton.
