Comets In Trouble

can you remeber when peter karlsson rode for workington and the isle of wight were in the prem league he had to ride in sweeden and we could only use conference league rider as guest

yes thats right, but we have no swedes in the side now.

My suggestion was a switch to Monday night in the Elite League, not a move to another night in the PL.

All very easy for me to say when its not my money, but if it was and i could afford to take a chance to make speedway a success again at Workington, I would wrap up on a Saturday as soon as possible and give it a go.

I agree nothing to lose trying a different night, to much competition from other things on a Sat night now, the GP Fortnightly doesn't help.

yes but my point is riders ridinng in the swedish league wouldnt want to sign for a tuesday night club and bspa might not allow a club to stage meetings on a tuesday because of this ever wondered why no one rides sundays(poland) and tuesdays(sweded) in the eliete league

As if that's going to make much difference to potential riders signing for Worky next season!

............... BSPA might not allow a club to stage meetings on a Tuesday because of this .......................

I think you'll find they've got more pressing issues to worry about ............

......... Ever wondered why no one rides Sundays (Poland) and Tuesdays (Sweden) in the Elite League?

But this is the Premier League we're talking about, and plenty of teams race on Sundays, which would be no different than a Tuesday for a Premier League outfit.

If Worky moved up to the Elite League, as suggested, they wouldn't have to choose a Monday, only moving to that day for Sky matches - Only Belle Vue and Wolves regularly race on Mondays, and look where they are in the league table!

so the answer to our plight is to go into the elit e league . get a handout from the nice peoplr at sky and that looks like a survival plan to me. lots of elite clubs make a go of it wiyh smaller crowds than us.the only down side is the groundhog effect same teams every 3/4 weeks. with the bspa trying to swell the top league, now is about right to make the move up. remember, if sky can keep other clube afloat . worky should be no problem.give it a go mr d. wonder what jason crump and nikki pederson are diong next year. :t:

I would have thought at this crisis time for the Comets, moving up to the 'Elite' is like trying to run after you have just broken both legs. If the promotion wish to have a go next year and the BSPA do bugger all over the closed season to reduce overall costs, for their survival chances next year and beyond, I would have thought a drop to the NL a better prospect and try to build up a home grown team, with a view to possibly go into a higher league in future seasons.

TBH I think that rather than "Go into a higher league" it will be a case of more clubs dropping down to join you

I will have to remember this advice for the next time when I go to do some debt counselling advice.

Move out of your council flat, and get a 4 bed detached. Flog that clapped out Ford Escort and get yourself a top of the range Maserati. Then keep your fingers crossed that you get yourself a new job with a salary that can pay for it all.

Mmm...interesting!!!!!!!!

In fairness, it was a fans suggestion, so we shouldn't be too hard. Any idea could be a good idea.

Surely Keith will have signed a rental agreement with the owners of the stadium, the council I presume and unless it is a season only contract, he may have penalty clauses that will cost him money?, but maybe not the same penalty as losing money each week. Therefore, if he still has some appetite for speedway, he should, in my opinion, think about the NL. I do think now is an opportunity to make the NL work for the good of speedway. The chances are the BSPA will do very little over the closed season and will limp into next season hoping for a miracle. The NL part of speedway has an opportunity to grasp the nettle and increase the number of teams, probably from the fallout of PL and EL clubs and rebuild british speedway from scratch with home grown riders only, no overseas riders, just our own. And with a business model which is not out to make money, but to at the very least, break even.

Indeed, but they are likely to be around next season!!

Given that I think I'll settle for two semi-finals, the PLCT and possibly more!!!!!!

Haven't seen you post very much lately on the BSF, such a shame they have let you out on good behaviour and we have to suffer the invasions on threads

Ahhh the PLCT, now Ipswich are in it , it suddenly starts to become something more than a losers cup which is what am sure the witches fans called it earlier in the season, what a surprise  .

"Shouldn't be too hard"? Is that because its come from a member of the School for the Hard of Thinking?

I thought the BSF was a fountain of all knowledge and all promoters had to do was "listen to the fans" and all would be well.

Then to combat falling attendances, apparently brought about by continual watering down of the product, it's an "opportunity"to water it down so much that former EL and PL teams flood into the NL.

Jesus, "listen to the fans" nod it could have all been laid to rest years ago.

And no, not "any idea could be a good idea", not if its a bloody stupid one.

Before you run down the PLCT too much, remember the qualification for h Young Shield that Workington got so excited about was for those not good enough to be in the play offs.

The fact remains, the sport is in trouble, not just Peterborough, Workington and other wobbley promotions, the sport in Britain as a whole. BSF offers the sport a free brain storming platform and sometimes, good ideas can come from what appear to be bad ideas at first glance. I say, keep the ideas coming, however daft they first seem.

And as for the poster I am replying to, you seem to spend your time on here shooting posters down in flames. Perhaps we could have a sample of your 'bloody stupid' ideas!

Agree it is nothing more than a losers cup, andI have never suggested it's anything else.

However it's far better being in that, than putting together a team together that the promoter clearly can't afford, and being a here today gone tomorrow set up!!!!

Now that is the definition of a loser!!!!!!!!!

Wasn't running it down Spineless, Workington have won this trophy 3 times and very proud of it :approve: , I was referring to witches fans who earlier on in the season had called it the losers cup , thanks apology accepted

How the hell would you know what our promoter can afford sitting behind your computer in your old folks home  !!!

Workington haven't closed yet might I remind you and your comments on this one Snacky are well out of order, the only loser in this is you, for someone who is pleased when a speedway club is in crisis..... PATHETIC :nono:

As I've already said a number of times, the Sky EL 10 teams model is dead, not least of all because the EL teams are basically PL lineups with a couple of "star" guests bolstering the teams.

If a handful of money bags promoters want to have star studded lineups, then let them start their own travelling circus of superstars.

The PL has its own problems but, at least until recently could provide speedway at a reasonable level in keeping with crowd levels and, with one or two exceptions, in keeping with British talent.

It's a second division country, accept and get on with it.

The problem now is that the combined effects of recession and weather mean that clubs aren't losing a bit of money, they're falling off a cliff.

The conference this year will probably see a large scale reorganisation.

It would be incredible to think anyone would be applying to join the EL, and anything more than half a dozen will be a bonus and a surprise.

Equally IF any of the fall out from the EL thinks the PL is worth joining and even if Dudley are permitted to move up, I'd be surprised if there are 13 teams in the PL by next March.

At the other extreme, The NL will be a handful of little more than training tracks - which is pretty much what its supposed to be anyway.

The only way for the PL to survive & prosper will be to cut wages and make it a take it or leave it situation. That might water down the PL slightly, but so be it.

To counteract the new wage regime from a riders' point of view there needs to be a radical look at bike expenses - all through the recent years, one group we've never heard pleading poverty are the engine tuners.

David Howe's simple suggestion regarding tyres is one that needs to be fully explored. The knock on benefits of a simple change seem many fold: less wear & tear on engines, slow up racing a little making it closer & safer being a few.

Whatever the league(s) structure, the flannel needs to be cut away. One opening challenge match, straight into the league campaign, playoffs (Craven Shield / Challenge Trophy other post season competitions if teams want them rather than forced into them)..
