Sheffield 2013

Recommended Posts

Or could they be thinking of striking up a deal with the stadium owners to switch race nights with the greyhounds on Tuesday.

No other Premier League track runs on a Tuesday so no fixture classes, and no Elite club rides on a Tuesday.

Also running on a Thursday clashes with Swindon, so running on a Tuesday would free up a Sheffield born rider to sign for the club and double up with Swindon.

Simon Stead appears to be the fans popular choice to lead the club next.

But then again new Workington Promoter Tony Mole is about to bring Simon back to Workington.

Tony Mole !!!! thats not whay the press release says.

The new Workington promoter is Laura Morgan, or am I missing something.

Tony Mole !!!! thats not whay the press release says.

For the benefit of those who can't be bothered to plough through the earlier excrement, somebody suggested Simon Stead for Sheffield, to which someone seemingly with their finger on the pulse of, well, something other than Workington Speedway, put forward the "information" that Stead would be the first signing of returning Promoter Tony Mole.

As history shows, the accuracy of that statement was confined to the correct spelling of the words "Simon", "Stead", "Tony", "Mole" and "Workington". Other than that, the statement was wider of the markthan could be imagined - even in the head of whoever dreamt up the deluded suggestion.

The stadium owners surely won't give up Friday or Saturday for the dogs as they'd stand to loose to much. Sunday, people have commitments and family time. Monday most people's first day back at work doubt many would fancy going. So Tuesday or Wednesday, although these nights don't clash with other teams much, I just think the change will loose more as people have their routine set to speedway on Thursday. Bad idea changing in my opinion!

Had a tweek to my teams with latest news about clubs and Joe signing. On current avg's.

1 Grajczonek 7.44

2 Skiddy 6.13

3 Masters 7.43

4 Hall 6.89

5 Wells 6.47

6 Haines 5.04

7 Sarjeant 3.00 = 42.40

Can't imagine any team lineup beating us at home. And feel we could pick up wins away, that's how leagues are won. Skiddy and Haines could swap positions as avg's change. Haines to cover Sarjeants rides if struggling. Can't believe I picked Hall but feel in this line up his away form would be covered.

Regarding the possible change of race day to Sunday. I agree with comments above – not a good idea.

I and some others I know, could not go very often due to home, family and work commitments. If this year’s fixtures had been run on Sundays, would there have been significant improvements in attendances to watch the 2012 team? I suspect not. As the newest Sunday club, we would have to concede choice of race day to the other Sunday clubs, meaning some meetings being run on another day, making the fixture list even more of a shambles than it has been recently. The fixture list should be agreed by February each year, and apart from a few late season play-offs, everyone would benefit by knowing exactly what’s what.

Maybe an earlier start time of 7.30 would be better, allowing spectators to get home a little earlier.

If Sheffield Wednesday or Sheffield United ever got back in to the Premier League, there would be some Sundays which clashed. There are also some FIM meetings and Sunday fixtures for other sports, as well as people having commitments at home. Speedway and Sheffield Wednesday on a Sunday afternoon? The traffic and parking would be a nightmare.

Speedway, not just Sheffield, needs to make the product more enjoyable to watch and greatly reduce riders’ expenses. As David Howe suggested recently, a change of tyre may do it, rather than scrapping a load of engines and replacing them all. There are plenty of experienced officials, riders and ex-riders about who can advise. It’s probably too late now for next season, but why not create a team of 3 and let them come up with their recommendations to the BSPA?

Track surfaces should also be more consistent. Anything to help make for closer racing and to have a solid fixture list is going to benefit, rather than just a change of race day.

If one of the reasons to consider changing race days is to accommodate Simon Stead doubling up, I would be surprised if Simon wanted to ride again for Swindon after what they did to him a few weeks ago. I wouldn’t.

It’s a good idea for the Promotion to flag up alternative thoughts, but I don’t think this one is worth considering for too long. No-one has posted a comment in agreement as yet.

Maybe promoting the club would help. what advertisement and exposure do the tigers do outside sheffield. Massive catchment area Yorkshire and Sheffield can't pull in the supporters at what is described as the best race track and facilities in the uk by many fans and riders. Something not right there?

Highly unlikely that the speedway would move into Tuesdays or Fridays at Owlerton because both those nights every week of the year are currently part of Sheffield's BAGS betting shop greyhound contract that runs until the end of 2015 (all the BAGS dog tracks across the country are on a 5-year deal that's only just coming to the end of year-2).

Well said speedway Dan. A lad at my work drives past the stadium 10 times a week for the last 2 years and doesn't know speedway was run there and i've been with friends to the dogs and some of them didn't know speedway was also at Owlerton.

There's so many different ways and areas the Tigers could be trying for new fans, asking for existing fans to put posters up mid season just seems lazy.

The race night has nothing to do with the poor crowds. Taking the fans for granted that they would pay more and turn up regardless to watch a garbage team has everything to do with it.

Other factors might include the weather, calling meetings off because it might rain and the complete lack of publicity around the city.

I'm glad to see Joe back in 2013 but anyone wanting any of the top five back next year wants their bumps feeling to be honest.

So you've not seen them at Pease Hall Halifax, Rother Valley Park, Hillsbrough Park, The Moor, The Olympic torch procession, The Frontier Batley, The Steelers, Sherburn in Elmet, Carisbrooke Hall with their exhibition stand, Gazebo TV/DVD bike race jackets and a rider giving out promo dvd's and free admission? You didn't read the double page spread in the Sixer or the full page in Wakefield on the mascot and you didn't see the groups from schools, scout groups, junior football clubs, cycle speedway, the Samaritans, the children's hospice or motorcycle training groups who came along free of charge. You obviously missed the reciprocal displays between the Tigers and Harleyworld in Chesterfield not withstanding the 10,000 tickets given away to schools and childrens organisations each year. The hoarding at the top of the Car Park that has been refreshed every year, the banners that Machin puts out in Penistone Road on race day and has been fined for. The leaflets that have been placed in the tourists guides in city centre hotels and that is just a few that I can recall that I have been aware of as someone who has helped on the track staff.

Same old same old Dan Machin's not ambitous, will never take the sport forward etcetera, etcetera, etcetera

Clearly not!!! Seems im not the only one missing the promotion drive either. More can be done I'm sure. I'm not having a pop at Neil and co either. Without them would there be speedway at sheffield? The sport as a whole needs to be promoted more and by that I mean value for money, entertainment, marketing etcetera, etcetera, etcetera ;)

I'm sorry but I agree, I have seen nothing of any promotion apart from the signs outside the stadium and a section in the Sheffield star.

I took 15 mates who work at the cable ski inside rother valley country park which several had been to owlerton to watch the dogs and none of them knew speedway was there.

Maybe a lot more is done than I first thought but if Tigers fans themselves arn't noticing the promotion of speedway what chance is there that none fans are going to see these and want to come.

You can always do more!

Don't want to crash the thread but thought it appropriate for Sheffield Tigers fans who are missing Speedway...

The Sheffield Cycle Speedway guys would appreciate a big turn out for their last match of the season against Oxford on Sunday. They need one last push to finish a respectable third in the Elite League. You can also see where Ashley Birks started off too :)

Cameras will be there for Sky Sports and a few opportunities for you to have a go before the match.

Genuine question: Bearing in mind the extensive places that Piccolo mentioned that Sheffield speedway is advertised, plus the regular pieces in the Sheffield Star, what do people suggest is done to further promote the sport on what must be a fairly limited budget? Television is ridiculously cost prohibitive and local radio is not much better, so taking those out of the equation, what else can the promotion do?

Not sure how people can say that they don't see any sign of promotion activity, and back it up by saying they've only ever seen pieces in the Star, billboard posters and adverts on the Window Centre vans.... what are they if not promotional?
