Discussions on the Berwick thread about new Glasgow centre-green presenter. Apparently he was at the BenFund meeting, and was talking with Dick Barrie after the meeting. Presumably about presentation.......

Oh no

A really good move by new promotion tonight. A Tigers' rider and bike, plus people handing out leaflets explaining speedway and detailing Ashfield fixtures, will be installed in the foyer at Braehead before and during the Clan's ice-hockey match.

With regular crowds of over 2,000 and many people of the same demographic which lends itself to supporting speedway, this is a fine bit of PR by the club.

It only takes 1% of the tonight's hockey people to decide to investigate speedway for the club to get something like £250 back at the turnstiles at the first meeting -- if half of them come back after that as regulars, make that £3,500 over the season!

The new promotion deserve a lot of credit for their early endeavours. On that basis alone I hope they are successful in growing the club's fan base, they deserve success!

Yes Scottish speedway needs a shot in the arm this year. Both promotions are making a great effort to improve their lot. I hope their efforts are rewarded.

They both need to continue to strive throughout the season to keep selling the sport and improving.

I do wonder though if there is scope to promote/advertise together?

e.g. make a big thing of the Scottish Cup weekend this season (I believe we race on 6 and 8 Sept). Could they 'club together' some funds to have an advertising campaign to boost the crowd. Perhaps even with a fan event in between the two fixtures.. how about a fans night somewhere to watch the Krsko GP.

The above is just an example.

We both know that if one club club goes down the pan it's very difficult for the remaining club to stay alive.

Thoughts?

Agree whole heartedly.

From both our posts on "How to Make Speedway More Appealing ..." we're like minded on this. As I said there the sport needs a centrally managed approach to promotion, and likewise in Scotland the two teams could and SHOULD do the same.

Why they've missed this opportunity in recent years I don't know, but from a business perspective it's unbelievable!

Hopefully it's not been about promotional rivalries. If it is then maybe we might see a change due to the changes at Glasgow, I can only hope so.

Rivalries should be kept to the track and the terraces.

Pulling their resources has economic efficiencies. So for both any money spent on promotion individually, would go further collectively.

There are some key existing opportunities they could both exploit to the max without much effort and cost.

1. Natural rivalry between the two cities populations. Easy to exploit on TV, radio and press - cost? Nothing!

Get the rival team managers together and stage manage the rivarly. Important then for the riders to do their part during the meeting - Deek and James perfect for the job!

2. Scots love their sport and love rivalry. Football has limitations, speedway allows all family members to go and 'vent' their rivalry in a safe environment. It's already there, the promotions don't need to do anything but exploit it.

3. TV, radio and press. The media are always looking for news and items of interest. Dick Barrie used to have a regular Friday breakfast show slot on Radio Clyde, which I made sure I never missed - no matter what. A continual message delivery of this nature is what brings new people to the sport, not a poster in a cafe window. The average human sees over 3,000 adverts per day! To bring in new people through the media it needs to be continual "nagging". People don't change their habits because of a poster.

The media will give you as much coverage as you want, for absolutely free!!!

4. Glasgow have one of the most famous speedway riders in the world. He's famous because of his thrilling track skills. The Poles would give up Lech for a month to have him in their team.

When do Glasgow ever exploit this? The guy is a legend, Weegies love their legends.

Glasgow promotion - Tell the friggin' World about Joe Screen FFS!!

He's not Scotland's Secret Bunker!!

Seriously, I could go on for hours with ideas on this but you know where I'm coming from!

Very good post, George. I regret to observe that, and don't everyone start screaming, the FORMER Glasgow administration had a lot to answer for in driving a wedge between the two clubs and their respective supporters.

That was then, this is now. There is a new face to the Tigers. Work between each other, although in public be deadly rivals. That was the original meaning of the "Old Firm" in football -- two rival clubs making sure of their joint financial success!

100% correct, George and Freddy.

The last few years saw the Tigers seemingly on a death wish (sun-off dramas and the horror of 4/6/10) in attempting to destroy the sense and sensibility of local derby rivalry, with the financial benefit it automatically brings when handled properly.

Hopefully, the new Ashfield outfit recognise their absolute need for a healthy Edinburgh, and the clubs will cross-pollenate support, as used to happen.

Think it is alway's easy to lay the blame at the door of someone who are no longer in charge in any walk of business as it is the easy option to take they are no longer here so let's blame them , that night in June at Armadale has no excuse but the sun off as you put it was down to storms in the Glasgow area in the run up to the weekend and damage was much MORE underlying even although the Sun was out that Sunday the damage was done earlier in the week.

We have no idea as to what the relationship between our old promotion and there counterparts from the East was like but hopefully there can continue to be a good working relationship between both for the future , I would just like to thank the old promotion for keeping thing's going for all those year's and deserve some credit for that.

Braehead Clan have followed up our visit on Saturday in their weekend round up post.

I think the whole thing has, and will continue to be really positive for both organisations.

I know you tried damn hard to get the club to tie in with them last year and assume your little paws have had some involvement in this so well done you for keeping at it and pushing it

Going off the current subject of conversation, but I am just wondering what people's thoughts are in terms of what our riding order will be at the start of the season?

I am going to suggest

1. Screen

2. Horwood

3. Wright

4. Bager

5. Grieves

6. Ringwood

7. Jacobs
