Berwick Bandits 2013

Recommended Posts

I believe the problem is, the Shielfield Park standards have to be improved to a new standard required by the relevent authorities, this would require a substantial sum of money being spent on an already out of date stadium. Hence taking what needs to be spent against possibility of grants, the idea of a new stadium.

The revenue lost to Berwick Rangers from Berwick Bandits would be substantial compared to what they pay for their lease.

What are the relevant authorities you are referring too. Council or Football or some others.

Quite incredible, I have anothing but praise for Shielfield stadium and its facilities, as a regular visitor. It is worth wondering what needs updating, the stadium IMO is far from outdated or run down, and very comfortable to watch the racing from a seat in the main stand. You should see the sh!t hole I watch at each Sunday and the lack of facilities they get away with providing.

Unless the costs to much to upgrade reason is a manufacture to publicly justify a sale?

Berwick Ranger find themselves in a situation akin to one that many of us experience - when our cars get older, do we carry on spending money on them, or trade in for a newer one with the costs involved?

"New" Shielfield Park is nearly 60 years old, and requires constant updates and improvements; is it time for Berwick Rangers to upgrade to a newer model? With the benefits of grants, and tax incentives to build rather than repair, it certainly looks tempting.

The Chairman of Berwick Rangers is a successful businessman, and a great visionary.

I believe if he wants a new stadium, he will have done his sums, and proceed accordingly - either to develop a new arena, or negotiate a better price for Shielfield Park, and improve it accordingly.

Scottish Football Association, their standards get higher every year for the lower division clubs, but on the plus side they do hand out hefty grants to help with ground improvements

From what I have seen there are few clubs in the Scottish Football League in the Lower Divisions whose grounds that are a lot worse than Shielfield. Lower League football in in a worse state than Speedway cant see many changes to grounds and standard in the near future.IMO

A successful businessman would be an unsuccessful businessman very quickly if he invested in Scottish Football IMO Edited by Fromafar

I think the sudden influx of revenue from Rangers and Celtic visits is burning a hole in Berwick Rangers' pockets. Instead of wisely investing for the rainy days to come, they feel they have to spend it!

To suggest that Shielfield -- on of the cleanest and most-acceptable venues in the lower Scottish leagues -- requires expensive maintainence is a nonsense. Been to see Albion Rovers lately?

Delusions of grandeur, I fear.

That saves a lengthy reply, well said, it sums it up well.

Berwick Rangers do keep on top of the stadium, and are constantly upgrading within the constraints of their budget. The issue for Berwick Rangers is well stated by Tweedsider. Berwick Bandits are lucky to be able to have the use of this stadium, which for speedway gives higher standards than many speedway stadiums, we the fans of speedway benefit from our hosts, Berwick Rangers.

if worst comes to worst and the speedway club does have to move to a new stadium in the next 60 or 70 years, it would be an ideal chance to move the location further North closer to an area like Dunbar IMO.

Yes. The Dunbar Bandits does have a bit of a ring to it. Edited by Willowman

Absolutely , when you compare Shielfield Park to both Ashfield and the dump , Berwick fans watch their speedway in the Nou Camp .

Eeehhhhhh, Sod off you lot, we'll just leave the Speedway in Berwick thank you very much

Agree with you H, but must admit that only a small proportion of the crowd actually come from the town (and many of those are "interlopers").

Why? I don't know, and see it mirrored at the Football too, perhaps there are too many other distractions for local youngsters. I know it isn't "cool" to go to the Speedway.

We do well to have a Speedway team in Berwick, but like the Playhouse, local shops, and many other things, we would rather moan about them, than use them - and then complain when they have gone.

Historically, I seem to remember the idea of a move to the central Borders being mooted in the past.

Apathy will win the day.

Going by others who have moved to new Stadia in Scotland, Dumbarton, East Fife and maybe others, dont think they will spend money on new ground as these days loads grants seem to be available. Also by installing these new state of the art all weather pitches loads of potential to hire out. In Scotland now and correct me if wrong, Stenhousemuir/East Stirling, Alloa, Montrose, Clyde and maybe Stirling have them? Think they will do ok.plus lot less pitch maintenance!
