Olympic Stadium...gp?

Recommended Posts

Just seen a lil' tweet.....maybe talks are taking place for the European Gp to be at Olympic Stadium. Should get the southerners excited but I'm off to Cardiff.. Leave the British gp there. Don't know can Britain support 2 Gps

Where did you see this tweet?

Twitter ........ it may be just someone sending out feelers but you never know do you?? Maybe SCoe would like a bit of income being generated after his successful Olympics finish.

Easier to get to maybe, but if speedway GP struggles to half fill the stadium they use now,it will be the same for the Olympic Stadium.

The thing is though I''ve had hotels in London much much cheaper than Cardiff even when events are on at Wembley stadium etc. The train & underground allows much easier access.

It could even attract bigger attendances simply because it's London. It has to be worth a punt regardless of rental costs etc.

If the Olympic Stadium was to happen it would kill Cardiff. I don't believe 2 GP's would be supported in the UK. Cardiff would probably only achieve 15-20,000 fans at most

  • I would love it to happen.Would be there like a shot, whereas i can't see me ever going to Cardiff.But.......this has to be sold to non speedway fans in numbers to happen, imo. And for that to happen i think you need a homegrown rider who has a good personality and is in the elite in the GP series. At the moment i think the lack of British talent, the anonymity of the sport to the outside world and i also think in all honesty that the top riders being from Poland,Denmark,Sweden etc also makes it hard to sell. Not really in sporting terms sexy or exciting and Greg is getting on a bit even if he comes from one of the sexy countries. One of the few marketable riders is Antonio and although i remember seeing articles about him in papers it probably didn't attract many newcomers.I wonder about that....

Rubbish, when Newport were in the FA Trophy at the end of last season everyone in Newport was complaining about the price of hotels. Yes you could get hotels further away the other side of London but that being the case stay somewhere other than Cardiff but also within a 30 minute commute.

Had IMG got the gig to run the Olympic Stadium post-Olympics it might have been a possibility. At the moment though, I'd be surprised if they took that sort of risk given that the SGP series isn't exactly coining in the money and IMG have a big hole in their finances because of other unsuccessful ventures.

Some interesting responses and tend to agree that as it's London, might attract more punters. However, I'll pick up on a word that's been constantly used relating to a little sporting event currently taking place in East London, and that is 'legacy'. So, if lots of new punters attend a London GP at the Olympic Park, think it's a fantastic show and want something similar, how are they going to get this, when there is no speedway in London (within M25), and even putting that aside, from a sport that has only produced 1 out of 51 SGP British rostrum places in 17 years, from a sport that gets little or no national media coverage, and from a sport that has not moved with the times in terms of upgrading it's spectator facilities?

It still seems most likely that West Ham Utd will take over the Olympic Stadium. If that comes to pass, I'd imagine speedway would have almost no chance of using the venue.

Even if West Ham move in there will be retractable seating, as a requirement for 2017 World Athletics Championship, so I cannot see that being a problem.
