Mdl Needs A Rule Change

Recommended Posts

To be fair Boston Five as had a beef with me all season, when the season started L.E. had 13 so called squad riders, remember

these riders can ride for any other team in the MDL, AJL, NJL leagues 5 of those also have not riden for L E this season, but i

haven't had any complaints. At the end of the day the team was built around Widman, Geary, Rumsey, and Holloway, and all teams

want to put out the best side possible. Its fair to say i have asked this rider at least 3 times to ride, but as not been able to through

work, which is understandable,so come on Graham lets bury the hatchet.

The rules will be looked at next year but it is down to the BSPA/SCB to approve and rubber stamp them.

I personally think the MDL has been a big success this year and has seen a few of its regular riders graduate to the NL which is what we are about. I do get a little bit frustrated somethimes when people say to me "its win at all costs" as I believe that all teams have put out evenly matched teams this year compared to 2011. We do have to make the riders competitive though as that is the only way they will improve and go forward.

Looking back at last night, its fair to say that Long Eaton struggled to field their regular squad as 2 of them were in Belgium and then we had AJL meetings. They were also limited to which NL rider they could put out as both Connor Coles and Liam Rumsey have progressed into the NL, meaning they can only use one of them at any time.

Hats off to Cookie though for riding last night, I can say that he will not be setting a new trend as there is no way either myself or Laurence will get on a bike unless they give us a 2 lap start :)

As well as rule changes, it would increase the competitions status if fixtures took place whwn they should. As it appears that all sides have "squads" of riders then it is dissapointing when fixtures do not take place.

I was at both Sheffield and Stoke over the weekend both of which had matches scheduled and both of which did not take place.

Also, more suprisingly as both tracks have MDL sides there was no second halfs or practice for their MDL riders.

i can say i know one rider in the L E squad was never asked to ride in this meeting i would say its not what you know its who you no in this league

Maybe the rider in question could let Steve know when he could ride as the others do. They take the fixture list and express availablilty for the fixtures. It is up to the rider to do some of the donkey work after all when they hit the NL the phone wont ring off the hook either until they become a desirable commodity.

You are quite right in what you say Kelvin since the project started it has gone from strength to stength but........With much stricter rules this year fielding a team has become more difficult or it may just be people don't want to ride for L E and has made the TM's posibly more proactive rather than just taking the easy option, btw Liam couldn't have ridden on Sunday as he was at Scunny with Stoke so there was no choice to make anyway. I fully understand there are rules and they need abiding by but unfortunatley the success of the leagues has not proved to be the main talking point which is sad. It has been; ineligable riders, teams breaking rules etc etc. and this leaves those left out in the cold even more frustrated.

Kelvin, my view differs somewhat from yours but I don't want to detract from your efforts and those of the other TM's who put in a lot of time and money to run this level of speedway, by turning this into a tirade of criticism, so I will avoid that.

It is true that it has been a huge success in that more teams have enrolled into the league, and the AJL was started on the back of the success of the MDL last year however that has produced a shortage of riders that could be allocated to each team. Last year, riders were associated with teams and an excellent team spirit was established, certainly in the Long Eaton squad but this year teams have sometimes tracked three riders, and I think that most riders have ridden for at least three teams this year making it impossible for spectators to associate themselves with "their team".

The rule changes did not help that cause one little bit and were inconsistent with last year. It was exactly the same in the NL when the number of teams dropped and the points limit stayed the same causing some riders to be squeezed out of the league. The rules have to fit the circumstances and clearly HQ at Rugby is currently out of touch with the number of available riders coming through the ranks right now.

This has led to teams tracking two NL riders, riders with NL averages above the agreed limit, and rules being being adapted to suit circumstances ie deducting points gained by an ineligible rider but not giving the opposition the full benefit of the deducted points. To my mind it has become a bit of a farce.

The positive news is that we have a different team in the Final and the performances of some riders has certainly improved to the point that some have moved up to NL standard. Thanks to the promoters that take the gamble and costs to stage these meetings, however it would be appreciated if the main meetings could be run in a timescale which allows the MDL meetings to take place. Too often the races are rushed through or cancelled because of delays in running the main meeting leaving the lads facing unnessary expense and no racing.

Enough for now. Thanks for the experience and all the hard work needed to keep this going.

Steve,

I note from the LE website that you are resigning from the position of Long Eaton TM. That is sad to hear but fully understandable in the circumstances of your workload and also the increased aggravation in the MDL this year. Thanks for all your support to the LE set up and the team will miss you a lot. Your dedication and hard work have been appreciated by all.

hi Steve i think you are being a bit harsh when you say i have a beef with you for all the season i have rang you once asking if there was a chance of a ride for mike i agree you have rang 2or3 times asking mike to ride the first time he was all ready riding for kings lynn the next time for scunny the third time he was working the problem he has is he is on call at work 1 week in 4 and you can bet its the week he gets asked to ride; i know your job as T M is a thankless task at times but to see 1guest and not be able to find a 4th rider to make up L E the team made us a little upset as we are only a phone call away;or even call in for a cup of tea ; it would of been good to have ridden once for LE this season i fully understand teams putting out the stongest team each week but when there is a shortage of riders i think the squad should get first pick; not fill up with the top riders from other squads ie have a grading system of some kind; also as most people riding must find the mid week tracks the hardest meeting to get to and as there are teams that do not have there own tracks why not hire a venue for a day at the weekend if poss and run several MDL meetings that day it could get rained off but a least there would be no chance of time running out after the main meeting

Hi Graham, i take it back about having a beef with me,i apologise, the problem i had was the team was finalised in good time

then friday it goes pear shaped, then i get somebody friday and they pull out saturday,so i go to kings lynn sunday for STR's

event in the hope of getting a open class rider to the meeting, nobody takes up my offer, notwithstanding i had texted 2 others

on the morning, and when i left at 3o'clock for Leicester both had left a message to say they couldn't do it,so at that late stage i

decided to do it myself, not that i wanted to.This season will be my last as my work load ever increases, however i must say as soon

as the BSPA/SCB got involved i knew my time was limited.

Rules definitely need looking at . but there is no room for old hands in this league . so the 50 ride rule must stay , this is the MDL once you have D'd and moved on end of .................. also 1 NL reserve this is not the holding tank for the national league to pick riders up and drop them as they see fit .
