Following the Elite League clash on Wednesday night (August 8th) between the Coventry Bees and Swindon Robins the Mercia Vikings have an all important MDL clash with Scunthorpe Stags . They are aiming not only to maintain their unbeaten home record but to achieve their first double of the season having defeated them a week last Friday.

The league table is the tightest possible with every club still in contention to make the end of season play offs so there is everything to go for in that respect. That though is icing on the cake as the main aim of the MDL is to find young British talent who need track time –which is why losing last Friday’s Godiva Trophy at Brandon to the curfew was a big disappointment to the seven youngsters taking part.

The clash marks the home debut of 16 year old Josh Bates who scored a superb 9 point max in the away meeting against the Stags . He rides in the National League for Mildenhall and is a hot prospect for the future who is mentored by former England International rider Louis Carr.

Bates is joined by Devonian Tyler Govier –who makes his second appearance in Coventry colours and skippers the side in the absence of Martin Knuckey and local lads Conor Dwyer and Andrew Braithwaite.

The Vikings are promoting the sponsorship opportunities to help the Vikings –who are not paid for riding or travel but get a much appreciated £20 voucher from the Nuneaton Speedway Supporters Club every home meeting to spend at Cov-Comp’s spares van.

Race sponsorship is just £10 a meeting and meeting sponsorship a bargain £40 a meeting –which will go to help the riders with fuel and oil costs.

Also advance warning of the MDL Rider’s Championship at Leicester on Friday September 28th where each club will nominate two riders with two wild cards added to the line-up which will be run on the Grand Prix format. Race sponsors for this are being sought at £35 a race with full meeting sponsor available for £300 plus backing for rider medals and product sponsorship.

Lawrence,

Unless Scunthorpe NL team declare a new line up before the meeting on Wednesday, it is my understanding that Scunthorpe are tracking an illegal team for this meeting ie 2 NL riders which is against the rules of the MDL.

Hi Martin, Not for the first time we have had to make the decision to give the right people track time as opposed chase MDL glory. Scunthorpe will always prioritise rider development and will campaign for greater flexibility within the 2013 MDL rules to use riders riders whose NL average has not yet risen above 3.00.

Riders like Danny Phillips and Tommy Fenwick really need MDL track time whilst others like Oliver Greenwood and Max Clegg also benefit from riding in the league. I appreciate there has to be some levelling of team strengths but I don't think using a second NL rider with a GSA of below three jeopardises that.

I am happier that the MDL has become much more of a development league this year and I hope you approve of what we are trying to acheive with the team we are putting out on Wednesday!

You are quite right Richard it should be the main aim of the MDL but it does seem to be one rule for one and one for another. A rider as you well know turned up at Sheffield to ride with full agreement of both team managers and was stopped from riding, when as you say all efforts had been made to find a suitable replacement, which meant LE operated R/R is this the ethos of the league? when it wouldn't have harmed to let him ride and deduct his points, as you say track time is the main aim

Anyway keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!

what would have been the point of letting the rider compete in the mdl match and deducting his points, when LE used R/R and the points for this did count. The rider in question did get to ride that night in the scratch races so it wasn't as if he missed out on track time, and it is my understanding that 1 of the other riders in the scratch races WAS eligible to ride in the mdl but didn't do so.

Richard,

I agree with your sentiments about giving the young lads track time but the rules are the rules as determned by the BSPA(this year) and deducting the points scored by the rider does not necessarily right the wrong eg Scunthorpe win a heat on a 5:1 and one of the riders is Danny Phillips who came 2nd so loses two points. The opposing team still lose 3:1 whereas it should be 3:3.

No more debate from me on this one.

Martin

There are no guests in the Vikings side !!....Conor Dwyer has been a squad member all year and was at the pre-season launch when he was announced as such. Andy Braithwaite came into the squad when Paul Quarterman was injured whilst Josh Bates was added as cover for Dan Greenwood, Tyler Govier was signed when Freddie Owen broke his leg.

Whats the point of Joining a league if your aim is to use the meetings as free practise time , the point of the MDL is to give riders a chance to ride as part of a proper team under proper rules . will it help anybody develop as a rider if they sit at home while someone who has already progressed up the ladder takes their place in meetings at the lowest level . you knew the rules when you agreed to enter a team in the MDL but for some reason you think they only apply to everyone else . can you not see how you are making this league look mickey mouse making no effort to win and tracking riders whose score are not going to count ?
