Brummie Kev
Looking at the Sheffield Site, it says it's off because of heavy overnight rain and a bad weather forecast during the day. Showers are forecasted, but as we know showers can be hit and miss. Edited July 5, 2012 by Brummie Kev
Shadders
Just how hard did it rain in Sheffield last night? Today's forecast is for a couple of light showers, nothing too bad. Seems as though they're happy to call it off early. Some of us had planned to travel and took time off work... Disappointed.

brewer
seems very strange all this, people saying the weather is fine, simon stead saying on his own twitter he is at rye, and then you read this on sheffields fb page, Just had this from Neil Machin: Simon Stead WILL be at Sheffield tomorrow night. The Swindon promotions insistence that Simon Stead will be at Swindon is to confuse people and a deliberate attempt to jeopardise the British Championship Semi Final. Track is excellent and meeting will definitely run, Normal PL ticket prices apply. 20 hours ago via Mobile · LikeUnlike· 2 all seems contradictory to me. hope it not a problem copying it as feel it very relevant. still planning on going to rye though so hope all good there, be great see, eddie bomber etc in action there. tigerowl
Had a bit of rain in Sheffield last night but nothing too much. It has been dry all day today and is very warm although showers have been forecast. I can't comment on the state of the track as I have not seen it but, is it any wonder no one travels to speedway any more when there is even the hint of a shower. I have been sat in the garden this afternoon - just a couple of miles from the track - and have the washing pegged out.
squall
Seems very strange that it's been called off, but last week was on despite much more rain
tigerowl
Just been on the phone to a mate who was intending to come tonight after a long absence. He was amazed that the meeting was off already and I was embarrassed to tell him. Crowds are down massively at Olwerton this season and there are next to no away fans, even from the relatively local clubs. Is it any wonder when stuff like this happens? I have been to four meetings this season due to work and rain offs and don't feel inclined to go to many more. it may well throw it down later on and the decision may be justified, but to call it off during the day when the sun is out seems rather odd. mister 69
sounds dodgy to me this, has anyone been at the track ,weather's been hot and sunny here all day had some rain last night no worse than last week, this needs a stewards enquiry. DAVEK
BBC Weather on line weather chart shows rain over Sheffield between 7pm & 10pm tonight and this was updated 30 minutes ago. This is the difference between this week and last week where the forecast was, and we definatley had, a perfect sunny evening. I am sure that the cancellation is not without a lot of thought especially with the travelling distance involved for some. Definately a no win situation, whatever Sheffield decided. I don't know which forecast they're looking at, but the BBC are usually accurate http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2638077 Very odd! Check the radar map at the foot of the page...... The decision to call a meeting off is not decided on the various weather forecasts shown on the net. As far as I know, they take advice direct from the Met or local weather office. Watch it be sunny tonight .......

Watch it be sunny tonight ....... Plan B was to take in a Panthers home meeting as it's around 75 minutes drive from us, but guess what? They don't have a home meeting tonight. The next closest to us Ipswich are away at Redcar, so plan D is a visit to our favourite Turkish restaurant!
tigerowl
If it rains then fair enough. But if we are going to call meetings off because the forecast is bad, we might as well pack it in now. I never gave it a second thought that it might be off until I looked at the BSPA site and it must be the only sport to postpone because it might rain. Even cricket gives it a go until the last minute for god's sake.
psycho3a
Found the below article... Now seems as though we have changed our policy !!!! We have had far less rain in the last 24 hours than the last few Thursdays and raced !!!! I am now extremely fed up with Sheffield speedway... if i had other options i would certainly be taking them but stuck as area we live next track is 50 mile drive instead of the 35 we currently do..I have still been selective on my meetings and will continue to do so instead of doing every thursday like we have for the past 10 years By John Gudgeon Speedway Published on Wednesday 2 May 2012 07:20 NEIL Machin has criticised speedway bosses who call their meetings off days in advance and admits it’s a “worrying situation”. The recent heavy rain has seen many meetings called off at least a day before, and Tigers owner Machin has vowed that Sheffield will not be adopting that tactic. He said: “I understand that clubs are trying to minimise travel costs for their riders but I just don’t think it sends the right message to the fans. “In these tough economic times we need to convince the public to come and spend their money at speedway and what message does it give when meetings are being called off days in advance? “ It doesn’t tell the public that we have made an effort to get the meeting on and in my opinion it is a worrying trend. We need to give them confidence. “At Sheffield we are lucky that we have such a good drainage system at Owlerton, probably the best in the country, so we always have a chance but regardless of that we make every attempt to get the meeting on.” Machin has also said that riders need to know that they will often be operating in less than perfect conditions and try their best to get a meeting on. He said: “I completely agree that safety should always come first but I’ve seen meetings where the track has been race-able, if less than ideal, and the meeting has been called off. “The riders need to know that sometimes they will be riding in conditions that aren’t perfect, but it is so important that we are making a big effort to get as many meetings on as possible. We have to attract fans, and sometimes the messages we send out aren’t always the best ones.” Edited July 5, 2012 by psycho3a
spin king
To be fair to Neil Machin he is usually spot on when he calls a meeting early, and is usually very good at getting meetings no when others have given up. I live 20 minutes walk away from the stadium and its just started to rain a little bit and the sky looks as though it is going to chuck it down.
BuxtonTiger
Looking at the clear blue sky in Sheffield, even heavy rain overnight (if there was any) leaves me baffled and confused as to why work has not taken place on the track today to make it raceable. But to get to Sheffield is only a 150 mile round trip at my own expense. Guess I may as well turn round and return home. At no time today had I thought the meeting needed checking. Perhaps the Sheffield Management could "come clean" on this one as I will now be very sceptical about setting out for future meetings.
