Craven and Young were fantastic there! Youngie was a real master at New Cross. Although past his best by 1960, he was able to beat anyone at New Cross, including the "Big Five" and frequently did. I'm not sure I agree about Craven. I have to say I was never that impressed with him during my first two years of speedway (1960 & 1961) at New Cross and never thought he was in the same class as Fundin, Briggs and Ronnie Moore (and Youngie!) Of course he was but never seemed to be at New Cross.

Technik
I always like the Pardubice (CZ) track, The golden helmet event is something to behold 6 riders in each race & 6 lap finals. The programe is hard work but it's a great weekend. Somerset (OTA) offered an entertaining nights racing when it was prepared well which in it's latter years was not the case as they insisted in churnning up the bends meaning all but the brave or stupid were forced on to the inside line. Wittstock (GER) I have only been there a couple of times but have been impressed with the racing provided maybe it because it was not a GP standard event & the riders were there more to enjoy it & not just to make a million dollars for showing up

You should have seen him on big wide grass tracks. I have his DVD . He was a true motorcycle enthusiast. A great rider who was too scatterbrained to reach his true potential ( that’s not a criticism , it’s just life.). It seems his second wife straightened him out a lot but his best years were behind him by then.

Yes I've read his book and to say that he was conventional would be stretching it somewhat...but was a tremendous all-round motor-cyclist.
