Clayton Isbel..?

Recommended Posts

Last ever meeting at Crayford in October 1983... The Newcastle Diamonds number 7 was a J. Clayton...? Well according to my prog. but I can find no record of such a rider appearing for Newcastle that year...

Was it possibly by chance, Clayton Isbel (a name I'd never heard of but have now seen mentioned in the stats)??

Can't help with regard who rode in that match at Crayford but Clayton Isbel was young Aussie who came over from Claremont in 1983. He was a regular at Belle Vue training schools and a few Colts matches and looked really fast, particularly round Hyde Road which was probably due to his Claremont upbringing. Newcastle and Crayford would not likely have been the two best tracks to showcase his talents on I suspect. He went home at the end of 83 and if I recall never came back

Now I'm really confused. My copy of that programme shows the Diamonds No. 7 as Jon Place, and an enclosed copy of the match report from Speedway Star confirms that Place rode, and failed to score!!??

Yes whoever it was didn't score... So one of us (or more likely BOTH of us!) misheard the great Bob Miller that night! But who was this masked man..?!

Clayton Isbel did ride some meetings for Newcastle in 1983 and would have been number 7 for sure..

He did ride a lot of second halves at Hyde Road in 1983 and we were quite friendly with him at the time.he did show potential around Hyde Road, as a lot of Claremont racers did and he was due to ride for the Aces in a meeting but i think it was rained off. He did continue to ride in Perth for a while but then gave up i believe.

Hmm, a mystery... Both Isbel & Place (according to the records I've seen) only ever rode ONE League match each for Newcastle. This of course WASN'T an NL match but was in the Supernational... So we're no nearer really finding the answer...

I had written Clayton (admittedly as a surname) in my prog, and two others had written Place...

I'm pretty certain it was John Place.

Clayton Isbel rode for Newcastle at Glasgow on 17 April 1983 (National League) and at home to Belle Vue on 4 July 1983 (Challenge). John Place was signed on loan from Middlesbrough in October 1983 after David Walsh broke his collar bone. Place rode in each of the last five meetings for Newcastle: at Edinburgh on 14 October (National League), home and away against Weymouth on 24/25 October (Supernational Semi-Final) and home and away against Crayford on 26/31 October (Supernational Final).

Cheers mate. Guess it must be so. Though I do still think it odd that in writing what must've been the wrong name in the blank spot in the prog. I chanced upon the name 'Clayton' which doesn't sound much like 'Place' and coincidentally is the same name as another bit-part Diamonds rider who I wouldn't have heard of but who COULD have been riding that night..!
