More Changes On The Island

Islanders Press release:

After receiving news that Marc Owen is likely to be ruled out of action for a further six weeks or more thanks to head injuries sustained when he crashed in this year’s British Under 21 Championship Final, the Wightlink Islanders have moved quickly to plug the gap in their side created by his absence.

And they’ve done so by signing youngster Aaron Baseby on an indefinite loan from his parent club Mildenhall who readily agreed to the move when approached by the Wightlink Islanders management.

“We had initially hoped that Marc would be fit to return to action next week and he hoped the same,” said joint team manager Kevin Shepherd, “but his doctors have told him he mustn’t ride a speedway bike for at least another six weeks.

“I discussed the matter with my colleague Chris Hunt and we decided that the best thing for us to do was to try and sign a temporary replacement to cover for him, Mildenhall informed us that they were more than happy for Aaron to come and ride for us, he wanted to come and a deal was quickly done and we wish to place on record our thanks to the Mildenhall promotion for their assistance.

“We bid welcome to Aaron who makes his debut for us at Smallbrook this coming Tuesday (May 15th, start time 7.30pm) in our opening league match of the season and, somewhat ironically, it’s the Mildenhall Fen Tigers who are our opponents.

“Rest assured Aaron is very keen to do well against them!”

Hopefully it's not too bad for Marc who had started the season well, but you can't be too careful with head injuries. Good luck to Aaron, a decent young rider who has shown a liking to our track in the past. At least this year the management are proving to us that they are giving it their best shot at winning silverware.

Good to see Baseby fixed up with a track.Really impressed me last year.Very consistant all season. Was hoping he could have fit in at Mildenhall this season, but averages didn't fall right.

Bumped into Azbo (and Mark) at Lakeside last night and was really pleased to hear the news.

As ADZ says Azbo had a very impressive season with the Fen Tigers last year where he was Mr Consistency and also raked up the most bonus points. Was gutted Mildenhall couldn't fit him into their team but glad he now has his chance, although shame it's due to another's injury and hope Marc Owen is ok.

Give Azbo a couple of meetings to get back up to speed and he will not disappoint.

PS such a shame to see Mark watching speedway instead of racing speedway.

I like this signing, one because I think Aaron will do a good job for the Islanders and two, as Islander15 said the management seem more willing to make changes this year rather than continue to run with R/R, admittedly it's a shame that the change has been made because of an injury and I hope Marc makes a good recovery and is back on track soon.

Iow crusaders, time for the crossed swords to be incorporated on the race jacket, and time for Mark Baseby to be added to the squad., wonder if I can get brian to build a turret on turn one? :)
