Bryn
Tomorrow (Saturday) yours truly, in the company of Marty and his son Sam, will be setting off at the crack of dawn for Shepparton for this year's Oz Under 21 title meeting. Defending champ Rory Schlein will start as a red hot favourite to retain his title but I'm sure the other 15 in the field will be eager to put one over him. I know Lunchy is making the trip to the meeting (and Ron Malm too if he can sort out some wheels!) - anyone else going? Then, on Sunday, it's back to Broadford for a "Young Guns" meeting so, all in all, should be a great speedway weekend out here.

Lioness
From Edinburghspeedway.com Rory Schlein is the 2004 Aussie U21 champion going through the entire meeting undefeated with Matty Wethers getting an impressive 3rd place! http://www.edinburghspeedway.com/news/04,3101,01.html Well done guys! Guest Sir Lunchalot
Qualifying scores in riding order Matt Wethers 3,2,2,2,3 = 12 Tyron Proctor 0,2,2,1,2 = 7 (Replaced Troy Batchelor) Michael Slade 1,2,1,1,2 = 7 Robert Ksiezak 2,3,3,3,1 = 12 Rory Schlein 3,3,3,3,3 = 15 Lewis Myers 1,1,0,0,- = 2 John Oliver 0,0,2,3,0 = 5 Trevor Harding 2,2,3,2,2 = 11 Cameron Woodward 3,1,2,2,0 = 8 Cory Gathercole 1,3,1,2,1 = 8 Mark Jones 0,3,3,3,2 = 11 James Holder 2,1,1,1,3 = 8 Chris Holder 3,0,0,0,1 = 4 Sam Dore 0,0,0,0,0 = 0 Arlo Bugeja 2,0,1,0,3 = 6 Matt Windsor (Res) 0 Run off for 4th Harding (White) Jones (Red) Final Schlein (Red) Ksiezak (Yellow) Wethers (Blue) Harding (White) Heat 1 Wethers, Ksiezak, Slade, Proctor 59.49 Heat 2 Schlein, Harding, Myers, Oliver (fell) 56.55 (new track record) Harding got left at the start and was way back when he eventually got going. Oliver had a major moment coming out of turn 4 on lap 2 and when I looked across he was in the middle of going left, right, sideways, over the handlebars and down. Heat 3 Woodward, James Holder, Gathercole, Jones (excl) 1.00.07 Rerun after a nasty looking fall on the back straight on lap 3 of the first effort. Gathercole had been narrowly in front of a determined Jones and they both came down on the back straight after contact was made. Jones was excluded and was straight over to the officials to complain but it's not often you see referees excluding the rider in front on the straight when contact is made and Jones was not about to reverse the trend. Woodward was the lucky beneficiary of all of that and won the rerun after being quite a way back in third the first time. Gathercole looked to have picked up a bike problem from his earlier spill and wasn't in the hunt. Heat 4 Chris Holder, Bugeja, Gates, Dore (fell) 1.02.57 Holder gated like a rocket and was never troubled. Heat 5 Schlein, Wethers, Woodward, Chris Holder 57.56 Wethers gated in first but it was only a matter of time before Schlein was in the lead. Heat 6 Gathercole, Proctor, Myers, Dore (fell) 1.01.71 Gathercole made up for his earlier misfortune. Proctor caught Myers having a doze coming off the final bend and easing off before the line and Proctor "pick pocketed" second right on the line. Heat 7 Jones, Slade, Gates, Oliver (f excl) 59.06 Uneventful rerun after Oliver fell the first time round. Special mention of Gates who did very well to quickly lay his bike down to avoid Oliver. Heat 8 Kziesak, Harding, James Holder, Bugeja (ef) 1.00.97 Heat 9 Jones, Wethers, Bugeja, Myers (f excl) 1.00.03 Possibly the longest time taken to run a heat in history. Five attempts were made to get this heat sucessfully completed. Myers fell causing one of them, the others were due to the tapes going up unevenly leaving the rider in yellow stranded. I felt really sorry for Wethers in this heat, he made the gate in every running of the heat except the one that counted !! The tapes problem continued intermittently for the rest of the meeting. Heat 10 Schlein, Proctor, James Holder, Gates, 59.25 The baby faced assasin strikes again!! Proctor impressed with a smooth level headed ride for second. Heat 11 Harding, Woodward, Slade, Dore 59.38 Harding won easily but behind him Woodward was having trouble getting by Slade. Eventually he did in the run in from the final bend to the line. Heat 12 Ksiezak, Oliver, Gathercole, Chris Holder 1.01.01 Gathercole produced an ordinary result when everyone expected him to be closer to the leaders than he was. Kziesak was proving to be "sneaky fast" by riding a sensible line with no heroics. Heat 13 Oliver, Wethers, James Holder, Dore 1.00.85 Oliver from gate one got out in front with Wethers from the extreme outside unable to get across to pinch first in the run to the first turn. That's how it stayed for the rest of the heat. Heat 14 Jones, Harding, Proctor, Chris Holder 59.30 Heat 15 Schlein, Gathercole, Slade, Bugeja 57.90 Heat 16 Kziesak, Woodward, Gates, Myers (excl) 1.00.37 Rerun after a turn 2 lap 1 incident that saw Myers and Woodward both end up in a heap against the fence. Myers was up quickly but Woodward stayed down for a couple of minutes while the crowd held its breath knowing Woodward was just back from injury and hoping it wasn't a repeat ocurrence. Myers was not invited back for the rerun after being adjudged the cause of the problem. Easy for Kziesak in the rerun. Heat 17 Wethers, Harding, Gathercole, Gates 1.00.80 Harding got off the racing line and had s serious moment on turn 4 of lap 3 but was able to regain control and retain second. Heat 18 Bugeja, Proctor, Oliver (fell), Woodward (f excl) 1.02.40 Another rerun heat. Exiting turn two the first time around Woodward ran wide and clipped the fence. One moment he was there, the next moment he was gone and instead of a red helmet cover being visible above the fence near me I saw a front wheel appear as his bike did a somersault before finishing across the track. On the second running Oliver decided he didn't want Woodward pinching all the hot water in the showers and he slid off too and sportingly hurried to get off the track so the heat could be completed. Just as it seemed Proctor would notch a win he had what looked suspiciously like fuel problems and went into coasting mode to allow Bugeja by for the win. Heat 19 James Holder, Slade, Chris Holder, Windsor (Res repl Myers, ef) 1.01.57 Windsors moment of glory lasted quarter of a lap as he ground to a halt coming out of turn 2 Heat 20 Schlein, Jones, Kziesak, Dore 58.95 On paper and seeing earlier results this looked a juicy prospect but often when you think that it doesn't happen. This was one of those times and it was follow the leader for four laps. Run off for 4th Harding, Jones Jones was in the lead but picked up grip coming out of turn 2 and had to back right off to avoid hitting the fence. Harding said thank you very much and he was gone. The track provided a good racing line but was dynamite when riders got off the racing line and it managed to gobble a few up and spit them out when they did. Most of the problems were caused by riders trying to take different limes and getting caught out. Those that rode a nice tight line didn't have too much trouble. I have no idea why Troy Batchelor didn't take his place in the line up.

Main Man
Thanks Sir Lunchalot for the in depth report --hope you don't mind if I borrow it to put on the Kings Lynn site --of course giving the British-Speedway Forum honourable mention as well as yourself. From the texts I've had the track was as slick as a board and caused, as you have said, a few problems for some not keeping to a tight line. This qualifies the top 4 for the World U-21 --but will Robert travel as I understand his dad (a former Polish International himself) wants him to finish his education before thinking about racing in the UK . If not will this promote Mark Jones --if he can come !! John Oliver seemed to haved a right mixed bag with a win over Matt Wethers but three crashes. Midnight_Lady
Well I was looking for a Monarchs one. two, three but this result is still great Congratulations to Rory and Matty and we are all glad that Cam escaped injury in these falls. Thanks Lunchy for the report and also for taking the time to post the report on the Monarchs Chatzone. It seems that Undera is as much of a black hole as Trelawny was for mobile phones Edited January 31, 2004 by Midnight_Lady
Guest Sir Lunchalot
No problems Main Man, go for it re the report on the Kings Lynn forum. I also posted it on the yahoo groups boards (both UK and Oz lists) so people might recognise it !! I also did a specialised one for the Monarchs board with some comment on Monarchs riders only as I know there are always problems with communications out of Undera and the Monarchs do love "their" boys. The main problem with the track was not that the track was hard and slick on the racing line but that it was very grippy off the racing line. When riders got off the racing line and hit the grippy stuff it was causing them all sorts of problems the longer the meeting went on. I saw some more speedway today and caught up with a bleary eyed Bryn again. He was one of a few that headed straight from the Undera meeting to the Broadford track where they slept what was left of the night. His main problems seemed to be a camp bed "three inches from the ground that squeaked" and being woken up for bacon and eggs from the BBQ at 7:30 am. I can assure people he is manfully battling on with true Welsh grit though. Those that know Bryn may not recognise the new look he is sporting when he returns in mid February. Without giving too much away with his current hairstyle if the Beatles reformed it would have to be John, Paul, George, Ringo, and Bryn. jronayne
Sir Lunchalot, would it be possible to use a copy of the race report for our website? (fully credited of course! ) Good result for Rory, looking good for the start of the season. Who's this Robert Ksiezak? Cheers James
Ozyace
Thanks for the report Lunchy. I hope you all had a good time, did Rory use the "I would like to thank my Mum and Dad" speech he learnt of Johno at Mildura. Who is Robert Ksiezak? and any more info on what happened to Troy Batchelor? Btw Bryn i hope you have enjoyed your stay down under it was nice to meet you and hopefully i catch up with you in June, stay safe and have an enjoyable trip home mate. Guest Sir Lunchalot
Robert Ksiezak is from Sth Australia and is just out of junior ranks and from what I see and hear seems to have his head screwed on the right way. As Main Man said his father rode in Poland and must be passing on both good information and riding ability to his son. I haven't seen or heard anything on why Troy Batchelor didn't take his place in the line up. No talk of any injuries around the traps so I can only assume it was either for the ubiquitous "personal reasons" or misfortune such as transport letting him down on the long trip from Qld. Must give a big "well done" to Bryn while I am at it, yesterday at Broadford during one of the (many) track waterings he gave the forum a nice free plug over the PA and even repeated the address slowly in case anyone wanted to write it down. Then he spoilt it a little by plugging the yahoo groups board as well but I'll forgive him for that !!

Btw Bryn i hope you have enjoyed your stay down under it was nice to meet you and hopefully i catch up with you in June, stay safe and have an enjoyable trip home mate. Phew! Have just about recovered from my three weeks "on the road" taking in all three rounds of the Oz Champs; the Under 21 Title and the "Young Guns" meeting at Broadford. Met some great people on my travels and, firstly, thanks to Gavin Elmes (Brisbane), Ron & Shona (Sydney), John and Janelle (Mildura) and Marty & Sam (Tailem Bend) for their fantastic hospitality and welcoming me into their homes. Ryan Sullivan was a deserving winner of the Oz title as was "Roo Boy" in the Under 21ss and, yes Ozyace he DID use Johnno's speech! LOL. BTW Glad to hear you're still alive after your "experiences" with Johnno on the road! ;-) Look forward to seeing you in June mate. As Lunchy has said, we hotfooted it straight to Broadford for Undera and, at my age, I soon realised that three hours kip on a makeshift campbed some two inches off the ground in a cold classroom (will explain that bit in a mo!) is definitely not good for the soul let alone the body!!! Broadford is a huge Motorcycle complex owned by Motorcycling Victoria and has something like 12 different tracks situated within (e.g. Road Racing, Motocross, Junior Motorcross, Longtrack, Supercross etc etc). The classrooms are used for training days / weekends - hence us commandeering same for an all too brief kip! Thoroughly enjoyed announcing at the Young Guns meeting (despite the lack of sleep the night before!) and am now looking forward to travelling up to Newcastle in NSW this coming weekend for Todd Wiltshire's farewell Aussie appearance. BTW was good to catch up with Todd's brother-in-law Dave Hamnett (am sure some Hackney & Newcastle fans will remember him) and his wife Michelle again. Alas, just got a fortnight left here "down under" before heading back to the UK but am already looking forward to coming back next winter!
