salty
Thanks for that Steve, how many times did Lee beat Penhall over the years? alot i would say. I was at the meeting at Dudley Wood in 1981. It was the first since Bruce had taken over the mantle of World Champ. If I remember correctly at least two of Lee's victories over Bruce were from the back. g13webb
I was at the meeting at Dudley Wood in 1981. It was the first since Bruce had taken over the mantle of World Champ. If I remember correctly at least two of Lee's victories over Bruce were from the back. I went to that meeting with Michael and watched it all from the pits. This was the home coming of the New World champion, Bruce Penhall. He arrived on the centre green by Helicopter, The Stars and stripes was playing, the crowd was cheering, a real american dream. Then a telegram was read out from the president saying how proud all americans were of his achievement. When the meeting started thats when Michael was at his briliant best, 3 times he took Penhall from the back. After the meeting Bruce came up to Lee and said 'Damn you Michael, why did we have to race you today of all days' Magic meeting, Brilliant memories, with top blokes, both of them........ salty
My memory is slightly different - the helicopter landing and all the presentations were on the Saturday but the meeting was rained off. Re-staging was the next Wednesday without the pre-meeting palavar - and you are right that Lee was brilliant. Wasn't sure that all 3 wins were from the back but I can definitely remember Lee showing great speed down the back straight to get past Bruce. Fortunately i was at both, remembered it being cancelled first, but thought the palavar was all on the same day. But its 30 yrs back now. ...
