oldace
So what was all that nonsense posted on here before..? Namely: Thinking about it now, the no dead heats rule would have been back in the day when there was no race points, when 1st and 2nd progressed and 3rd and 4th dropped out. Race position determined which race a rider went into next so a dead heat was not possible. Now we are back to race points then there are no issues with dead heats

rusky
The placement is important, and they can't be placed right on the front of the wheel which is what determines the winner in speedway. Speedway is not a sport where timing is especially relevant or close finishes all that common, so it could live without transponders. However, just about every other motor sport uses them these days, and the cost would be relatively trivial for the SGP. They are currently used on the Ice Gladiators bikes, although I am not sure of the actual placement of them, and for those who watched the coverage on Motors TV, you will of seen that the commentators like them. The FIM Have a tie up with TAG Hueuer and there is no doubt that they will come to the SGP in time, as they will to all FIM sanctioned events eventually. There has been much discussion within the FIM about the most appropriate place to house the transponder, given the frequency at which riders change bikes..... 500cc
It's a fine question. I accepted the chat about rider number being the decider without actually checking the rules, but after checking them I can confirm that the current SGP regulations still state what Neil said....However, I do definitely recall it being said that dead heats were no longer to happen in the SGP (and I thought the same applied in the Polish league). Could it be that the refs have been instructed to NOT declare a dead heat despite the regulation still catering for them?? I think your last sentence is probably the crux of this. I too remember 'dead heats' being out lawed not long after the graphics were screwed by one in a BSI event (Lingren and Harris at the 2008 World Cup Qualifier in Coventry perhaps?). Fairly certain that was the Sky commentary team who announced that. Now whether anybody will admit that a referee has been instructed not to award them is another matter. Bet we NEVER see one awarded in a GP or World Cup Finals event though. Edited April 10, 2012 by 500cc
