He wasn't underage but was still at grammar school and didn't want them to know of his speedway exploits

Trevor Charley rode under the name Trevor Vincent in 1975 - one ride for Stoke and failed to score. He rode in 7 matches in 1977 under his own name, averaging 3.368 (15 + 1 from 19). Thanks Gauntlet for that, thought Charley was underage for his debut was highly rated. ,,

chunky
sidney : Shawn Moran appeared under the name of David East in some sort of open fixture at Hull, scoring eight points, I believe. I'll see if I can dig out the SS. Steve
arnieg
And don't forget Reg Neal who rode for Provincial League Exeter in one match in 1964. This happened a couple of weeks after Ronnie Genz walked out of National League Oxford. ... could they be related in any way? Grachan
I think Howard Cole rode as Kid Bodie so his mum wouldn't find out he was riding speedway! It was something like that anyway. The story was on one of the history of speedway videos that came out a few years back. Trevor Charley is another name that leaps out from the past when I see it. I have a feeling he may have ridden underage too and that is why I remember it. Didn't Mitch Shirra ride underage at either Coventry or Glasgow as well? moxey63
Trevor CHARLEY: Rode illegally under the name Trevor Vincent when just 15, receiving his (illegal) maiden call up by Stoke for the September 1975 visit of Rye House. The previous month he had ridden for short-staffed Mildenhall when they visited Loomer Road - more than seven months before his 16th birthday! Had also ridden beforehand in a Training School match at Mildenhall in February 1975 under Trevor Charley!
WembleyLion
Didn't Mitch Shirra ride underage at either Coventry or Glasgow as well? I remember seeing Shirra riding for Coatbridge when he was 16 and he was really impressive for someone so young. Grachan
I remember seeing Shirra riding for Coatbridge when he was 16 and he was really impressive for someone so young. I remember a match at Swindon when he was about 16 too, and came in as a replacement for someone for Coventry. When he was announced the Coventry fans behind me all cheered and started laughing. I think he fell off in every race, and each time they all cheered and laughed again.
SCB
sidney : Shawn Moran appeared under the name of David East in some sort of open fixture at Hull, scoring eight points, I believe. I'll see if I can dig out the SS. Steve Shawns (David Easts) debut was for Hull against a Ray Wilson select. Shooey replaced his brother with Graham Drury going into the team and Shawn (David) dropping to reserve. He won his first race on his way to 8 from 5 (I think). This was the back end of 1979. The week after he rode in a 4TT for a USA select vs a Hull, Sheffield and Exeter select scoring 6 from 5 with a race win. I only know this this because I (Shawn) sat down with Shooey the dog to watch the Shawn Moran DVD a couple of nights ago
mervjankefanclub
Yes you are right as usual Grachan memory superb did Neil Evitts ride as a 14 or 15 year old? Neil Evitts rode the first few months of the 1980 season with the Stoke Potters before it was discovered he was 15, Sidney. That same year Robbie McGregor turned out for Glasgow in four meetings, two of which when he was still only 14!

Split
When it comes to riders who were better known under other names, Edwin Vernon (Chum) Taylor. Raymond Arthur (Billy) Bales and Squire Francis (Split) Waterman are three names that come to mind.
