Oh, and Laurie "Mr Crayford" Etheridge (1975-82) should have been there for our final season as well but.........i mustn't let myself get started on that!!

And you're dead right - a real shame that Laurie missed that one (final - and that's an even BIGGER shame!) season for the Kestrels.

Alan Sage, Crayford 1975-83.....all 9 seasons of Crayford's second (ok third, if the 20's/30's rumour is to be believed) and last  comin

I love the fact that something which it is said happened in the 1930s can be called a 'rumour'... Surely there's one way of knowing if the story is true, though...: ask Mr. Williams..!! Bryn would've been starting secondary school around then so surely he'd remember!! :P

Phil Clarke, Billy Bales, Ove Fundin all at Norwich.

Phil Clarke and Billy Bales were tremendous clubmen at the Firs while Ove Fundin was different. Granted Fundin kept loyal to Norwich and I'm certain if Norwich had stayed open another 10+ years then he'd of continued riding much longer but Ove wasn't much of a team man although obviously his contribution to Norwich speedway was huge and still remembered to this day and for many years to come!

Another loyal clubman who never rode for anyone else was one of Ipswich Witches all time greats Tony "Shrimp" Davey, 1970-1980!

In modern times Chris Louis' loyalty to the Ipswich Witches 1989-1998 riding and 1998-present as part of the management has to be one of the best examples of club loyalty when one considers Chris was one of the best riders in the world in his prime and could of easily left for another club willing to pay him more!

I must apologise to Chris Louis I've sold him well short. He in fact rode until 2008, only finishing after injury and only missing the 2003 season also due to injury!

And yes Norbold, I do know who the most popular Norwich Star is, a certain O Fundin!

Am I right in thinking that you

Having just reread this thread, I can't believe that no-one (especially me!) has mentioned Ron Johnson. Involved with the Crystal Palace/New Cross set up from its opening meeting in 1928 up to and including its last season in 1963.

I am right in thinking the you are the Author of Out of the Frying Pan,if so just to let you know just read it and found it a excellent read.

But i think the rider at the moment with the longest unbroken service must be Matten Kröger at Brokstedt who a few years back recieved a medal for 25 years service,so must be going into his 27th or 28th season now.....

3 seasons later and Matten is still a vital member of the Brokstedt team.Riding in the Budesliga and also the lower level 2.Bundesliga

Rob Hollingworth deserves an honourable mention. Made his debut for the Barracudas in the mid 70's and made a welcome comeback for the Barracuda-Braves in 2003-4.

He was certainly a popular rider at Plough Lane in the CL days and seemed to take part in all the open meetings at Wimbledon!

Just to correct someone on an earlier post who said that Pete Smith rode for Poole from 1965 til 1977.......he actually had his first meetings for Poole in 1963 not 65........he shows in the team sheets for Poole every year from then until 77.................

For long service? Wasn't the Canadian star Eric Chitty associated with West Ham from circa 1936 until 1951?

With due acknowledgments for this Link - http://www.speedwayatoz.co.uk/ericchitty.html

Correct- Eric passed away in Toronto as well as being born here, to be specific in the Toronto district of Willowdale which is close to where I live. Reg Fearman who was a friend of Eric's is still in touch with Eric's son, who lives in Ottawa. In fact they often meet up in Florida during the winter.

Surely Rob Grant must be up there, started at Berwick in the juniors, progressed to the full team and from memory only had one season away at Edinburgh, otherwise he was a Bandit throughout his career, and happily is still involved at Berwick.

Rob Grant gets my vote, a great servant for the Bandits - and an absolutely fearless rider, one of the great characters in speedway.
