Saints Alive 1947

When Southampton returned to speedway in 1947 in the National League Division Three, the first captain was Vic Collins. He was injured and succeeded by George Bason. I think that later in the season Bert # Name Removed # took over the captaincy. Can any member confirm this for me please?

Vic was indeed the first captain. I don't know when he was injured but the prog from 25th sept still lists him as captain.

A later prog lists Peter Robinson in the role.

Bob Oakley took over for the final meeting v The Rest in late october.

I cannot see Bert # Name Removed # listed as captain but I don't have all the progs for that season.

Hope that helps.

Because Crouch...er...must be a very rude word....

Well it used to be accepted on this forum. Here's an old link I dredged up and the surnme # Name Removed # (I expect deleted by the time this appears) was in then. It will be interesting to see if these old mentions of the respected Southampton rider's surname are affected or not?

And what about poor old Dave? Can he not contribute under his own name any more?

I think it is because of "poor old Dave" that the name cannot be posted on this forum

Although i do seem to smell something fishy here,as speedyguy started a thread with Dave no name mentioned in it a few days ago ;)

I didn't bring Dave into the subject at all. That's developed since my original query about the 1947 captaincy situation at Southampton.

I should have also asked then - was Vic Collins at anytime a captain of the original 1929 Southampton team?

The other names given were possible successors to Collins after injury, a matter which has since been corrected by the names of Peter Robinson and Bob Oakley having roles as Saints' captains in 1947.

I had a punchline for this thread at a later time that the 1931 Southampton team included Collins, Jack and Norman Parker. The link to 1947 was that they were all team skippers - besides Collins at Southampton. Jack Parker led Belle Vue and Norman Parker captained Wimbledon - a gap of 16 years. Something unique in speedway history?

No you didn't,and nowhere do i say you did. What i did say for the second time so you might understand.A few days ago you started a thread in which Daves surname didn't get past the forum filter.A matter which was subsequently commented on.Now,low and behold you start another thread in which the same surname also funnily enough doesn't get through the forum filter and is commented on.......strange eh? ;) And i think if i am correct your punchline has already been used a few days ago in another thread.....?
