Hi,

I took the liberty of emailing Ove Fundin for you and asking him if he knew anything of Gote and this is his reply:

'Hi Jim,

It is a year since I last met Gote, I guess he is enjoying life as a pensioner

With my best

Ove'

Hope that helps in some way...

I have often wondered that myself.

If my fuddled old brain remembers correctly Gote left Wembley mid season 71 to go to college in Sweden to obtain an Engineering Degree.

I'm sure one of the Swedish rides of that generation studied town planning after retirement from the sport and had a role in local government in Sweden. I thought it was Knutsson but it could have been Nordin, does anybody know?

Nordin was magnificent to watch, speedway as it was meant to be.

Hi,

I am sure Bjorn Knutson built up quite a successful car dealership more or less from when he retired from racing. He is now retired from that business and spends most of his time in two houses in Sweden and playing a great deal of golf, so I would guess it would seem doubtful if it was him.

Gote Nordin was unquestionably a truly world class rider and formed part of Sweden’s 1-2-3 in the world final in 1961. In fact his record in world championships, world team cups etc. is impressive and he was undoubtedly one of the world’s top riders in the 60’s

He rode for Wimbledon for a short while so I got to see him regularly and remember him as an elegant stylist with immaculate equipment.

There was much talk in those days of his reluctance to ride in Britain because he owned a successful newsagent’s business in Sweden. I would think it highly likely that he ran that business full time when he retired from speedway racing.

Gote was one of my favourites.

Remember seeing him riding the white line (at Wimbledon?), sitting still in the saddle, tall and upright, the epitomy of class and style.

Roaring around the outside, constantly shifting his body (and centre of gravity), ducking down low behind his handlebars, was little Peter Craven.

2 great riders with very different styles, but both wonderful to watch, though for totally different reasons.

One of my most memorable moments watching our great sport.

Last saw Gote riding at Poole a few years ago with Briggo, Ove etc.

Pure class, simple as that. By the way, Gote is pronounced 'Yerta'

One of the most elegant riders on a bike.

Awesome for Poole in 1967 and always had time for the fans.

Im sure I read in Tommy Janssons book that Gote actually died in a track crash, around 73/74. Fortunately they got him back.

In Sweden for the World Final in 1977, I left my hotel without my ticket. Trying to explain to the lady at the ticket office was difficult. Up stepped Gote and got me a free upgrade!

He ran over Ove's foot in the 1997 Poole Golden Greats meeting, much to my dads annoyance. Still as elegant as ever though.

He was at Poole around 5/6 years ago and look fit and healthy and that big smile lit up his face.

Definitely one of the all time greats for me.

I am sure that Ole will be pleased that his foot was ridden over elegantly.:wink::rofl::rofl:
