iris123
I would make only one major change to the GP Series and that would be to have a rule that a GP meeting in any country must take place on that country's normal race night: So Sunday for Poland, Tuesday for Sweden and Wednesday for Denmark, which would free up a number of Friday and Saturday meetings available for UK EL teams. The other minor countries who do not have EL standard racing could be allocated meetings on Monday or Thursday. That would leave just Cardiff to be raced on a Saturday. Oh yeah, that'll work You race monday, tuesday or so and we have Cardiff on a saturday!!!!Why?EL race mostly on a monday night anyway,so you have Cardiff on a monday and the rest of the GPs stay on saturday thanks.Suits the rest of the world Don't often agree with Know, but he is dead right here
Ghostwalker
Little Un , or British clubs could race on Mondays only since that would mean that the EL would not be affected by the GPs. If you in Britain stubbornly wants to have meetings each night of the week then you'll have to accept the consequences of that decision. I do almost agree with this - it just may clash with having practice the day before. A very interesting idea though!

If you in Britain stubbornly wants to have meetings each night of the week then you'll have to accept the consequences of that decision. That would be ideal however most tracks in the UK rent the stadium they operate in, take Swindon, the stadium owner runs a bags greyhound meeting (ones that are piped into bookies for inday betting) on Monday afternoons and there is not enough time to cover the greyhound track after to run speedway. Seen as they make more out of these meeting than they do in stadium rent for speedway then there's no way they'll give up that payday. We need to be happy that they bust a gut once in while to allow SKY to run a televised meeting on a Monday Night. Tuesday night - Out due to Sweden Wednesday night - Out due to greyhound racing Thursday night - our race night Friday night - out due to greyhound racing Saturday night - out due to greyhound racing Sunday afternoon/night - out due to Poland Many other clubs are in the same position but with different nights affected, hence why sadly we don't have a fixed race night! The Little Un
What a stupid suggestion-great if you want to end world championship speedway. What about supporters attending on a weekday as against a weekend-would halve the crowd at a stroke. The alternative and the one I prefer is for an "Elite League" fixture list where Monday and Wednesday night clubs race at home during GP weeks and Friday and Saturday clube race at home during non-GP weeks. Thursday nights clubs could race on most GP weeks, except for one or two GP meetings that see riders leaving on Wednesday to get there. Of course that only has to apply when the GP season starts for proper in Europe. I do not see the GP series having that many problems as old riders will go and new ones shall arrive but people will always say the FIM meetings are a problem when in fact the problem for British speedway is British speedway. I think Swindon have the race night just about right. I would not go for Monday other than the chosen Sky meeting: I did go through the clubs a while back and there was not a single club that could not race on a Thursday. Somebody said that Wolverhampton could not ride on Thursday due to a bags meeting but in fact they have the same meeting on Mondays. The big advantage with thursdays is that it allows a rider to have a day between Poland and Sweden, plus between Sweden and England. alan_boon
There are certain places where a weekday racenight don't work. I think just about every track would run Friday or Saturday, given the choice - it maximizes children & away attendance. If I think back 20 years ago, the British League had 5 Saturday tracks (Cradley, Coventry, Bradford, Swindon & King's Lynn) and 2 Friday tracks (Oxford & Belle Vue). Only Wolves & Reading ran a weeknight, both on Monday. Crowds seemed bigger then.. Edited November 5, 2011 by alan_boon

With all due respect GW, you're failing to understand the pressures the huge majority of British tracks work under (and always have done..). Many share with other sports (predominately dog racing) and so race nights are more often than not determined by nights when things like the greyhounds or Stocks etc. aren't already running. A common night for Speedway in the UK has never been, isn't now and I strongly suspect never shall be possible... Nor do I believe that the majority of dire hard fans would want such a thing... A number go several nights a week..: commonality would end that at a stroke and they'd have to start talking to their wives!!

Parsloes 1928 nearly
What current EL clubs can't run on a monday night ? how many many have dog racing on a monday night ? No idea... I was responding to the point that all British tracks should run on the same night... The fact is individual promoters will do what's best for them pragmatically and run on a night in line with how they see their business can best prosper.. Would seem that for most, Monday's NOT that night..!
Humphrey Appleby
I think the BEL could actually run all its meetings on a couple of midweek days, but the reality is certain days are just not good for crowds in some places. The idea of running at midweek tracks in GP weeks and weekend tracks on non-GP weeks also wouldn't work as you'd need an equal split of tracks, and of course the weekend tracks still need to race against each other at some point. The loss of 12+ prime weekends has been greatly detrimental to British speedway, even if it's not the only reason for the decline.

If the teams in Allsvenskan can get 1000-1500 people on a regular series meeting on a Thursday, shouldn't the British leagues also be able to get good crowds on weekdays? mickthemuppet
What current EL clubs can't run on a Monday night ? how many many have dog racing on a Monday night ? So what promoters would want run on a Monday night when there is Live Elite Speedway on Sky. You only have to look at how many people attend a live Sky meeting to show that would finish Speedway completely

Well okay - I was talking (initially) about tracks as a totality; I see now you just mean EL tracks. Maybe they COULD run all on a Monday - though I'm not hugely convinced of the value of doing that... Purely selfishly, Monday would be a whole lot better for me to attend my local track, Lakeside...
