SORRY to correct you but there wasn't 90,000 plus at Wembley in 1981 nor anywhere near 30,000 at Norden. Less than 20,000 at the last World Final staged in the UK.

I was fortunate enough to be very close to many major players in that 1970/80 era..just like Phil.

 

He is 100% correct....the Wembley crowds of 1975..1981..were about 55- 50,000....sizeable enough..but shows you the work achieved by BSI over the past 6 years.

 

To give you an idea our client numbers to Gothenburg W/F 1991 were 2200...Pocking 1993 about 1400...Vojens 1994 about 900....and in the 1st year of GP events.....42....try running a business on 42 !!

I no we will never no say Cardiff,are individuaels just making a healthy return and none of it going back into speedway grass roots ect.I no its always been a issue, even Briggo said before 72 final prize money was a joke.In this day and age riders should be getting more they are providing us with the entertainment.I just did notrealize,how much little return the riders got hence maybe why ward will not ride in the gps.Darcy noes he will ride only for so long[god forbid no injuries]and has to earn to as and when he isnt a speedway rider.So if you asked darcy either win the world championship go into history but earn hardly anything.Or do what hes doing now for a long period and have something for his future.what would i do ?ambitsion win titles earn little or just earn and have a nest egg. the latter for me difficult.

I struggled with most of that if I'm honest.

I would be very surprised exspecially in 1981,if that was the gate?Because in there history page it says they could of at one time got 110 thousand in there?If the gate had only been 50000, surely there would of been empty gaps all over the place i remember it packed and humming. If wrong i am sorry,one of the greatest days i have ever been to 1975 was good as well even thou the dust and lighting tried to spoil it special days.

THE capacity for soccer at the old Wembley was 100,000 (or at least that was the official figure and it made for good reading) but World Final attendances never got that high. But it is pretty irrelevant now. Wembley closed its doors to speedway and Odsal became the only viable alternative.

 

But as spiegel points out, interest in UK speedway was considerably higher through the 70s and 80s but had been declining since the immediate post-war era when the Wembley supporters club had over 80,000 members. Crowd of less than 3,000 for a league match in the 70s would also have been deemed very poor. Now that figure is rarely reached outside of the play-offs. The circulation of Speedway Star was twice was it is today in the 70s, yet another indication of how support for speedway in the UK has diminished.

 

As for the riders, it is not hard to imagine that sponsorship deals based on 11 globally televised events (12 next year) are more lucrative than just one.

 

Anyway, as we were saying ... who will get a wild card place next year if Ward, for wholly justifiable reasons, turns down the invitation?

The riders who seem to be successful in the GP are those with strong and stable back up teams, plus a lot of money. I personally think Greg spent a fortune this year in order to win the big prize having earnt enough to set him and his family for life.

 

Says everything that needs to be about how much our sport's World Championship has changed...

If people think that's for the better good luck to them...

Personally I'd say that this has all been the most retrograde of steps and we shall live to regret it...

Sorry if i waffled,jist of it was is speedway as a whole benefiting from the gp series,the organisers are .As far as i can see the riders are not getting the rewards they deserve.

Don't feel sorry for them. Half the GP field are millionIres or very close to it. They do alright don't worry.

SURELY it isn't just about the money. Isn't becoming World Champion what the serious riders aspire to? Not even Mastercard can buy you that.

Without money you cant even have a crack at the world championship.This is what Parsloes has said,a level playing field you could be the most talented speedway rider out there without backing moneywise forget it.As for riders earning loads dunno about that either some of the top stars[maybe deserve it] some other levels below that must be hard to make it pay.

all the riders do pretty well and most are minted. bsi pay rates are average but inline with other two wheel sport and better than most.

the differance is in final winnings and bonus in other sport. look at rv in ama. two million supercross, one million outdoors. one million vegas. thats without salery and sponsorship. chap has done maybe 5 millon this year.

 

speedway does not attract the sponsorship to pay this and never will. no big manufactures in sport really and not that many people go compared to other two wheel sport.

 

unless bsi get into the states and such places and pick up major players on the sponsor front it will slowly die.

This last sentence is so correct. BSI are extremely shrewd clever pepole with a massive company (IMG) behind them.

 

I have no pre-knowledge of what they are planning, but it makes huge business sense to grow a buusiness gradually. But I would be highly surprised if say 5 years on you don't find the SGP in many areas not previously known to have Speedway. Add to that the USA and I expect the series to be truly worldwide.

And if IMG/BSI were running the SGP as a charity, that would be fair enough. However, they're profiting significantly more than the riders who take the physical risks.

How are pay rates different from prize money in the SGP? The prize money is how they get paid, is it not...?

I understand HTC Highroad were paying Mark Cavendish several million dollars a year for example; and the top MotoGP riders are all on multi-milion contracts too.

I would hazard a guess that the top table tennis players earn less than Andy Murray :rolleyes:
