Lake Bodom Comet
Does anyone know what became of the proposed plans to revive speedway across the Irish Sea? Think a guy who was involved with Shelbourne speedway in the early 1970s was behind it(Trevor Redmond?)and he'd found a site in Dublin where he was seeking planning permission...there was also talk of a possible track in Limerick?? Since Trevor Redmond has been dead for 14 years I dont think it was him. (He did promote at Shelbourne Park in 1961.
emerald tyke
Hi, I think the guy you're thinking of is Stuart Cosgrove....he was going to apply for p/permission in 2009. There was a demo of speedway (albeit in fairly deep sand at the RDS)..I know i was there! with Stuart Robson and Ben Barker) but nothing seen in the press since. MAN ON THE TERRACE
Given the current economic climate in Eire I doubt there is any interest in reviving speedway at present. On the other hand the Irish stadiums that used to run speedway ....Shelbourne Park, Harolds Cross etc have all been refurbished to a high standard for greyhound racing purposes. There are currently 18 greyhound stadiums running in Eire. Unlike our nobhead politicians their sport ministers have supported & indeed provided financial assistance to enable these stadiums to be refurbished & in turn this has led to larger crowds with a lot more youngsters (in respect of Shelbourne Park & Harolds Cross) having a night at the dogs, including a reasonable priced restaurant meal before going on to the nightclubs, bars etc in Dublin. Increased crowds have ensured a healthy betting ring which in turn returns money back to the track. Compare that to the pathetic sight that Wimbledon dogs has unfortunately become...main stand closed, roof leaking, only 3 bookies standing...poor crowds.....zero atmosphere on the terraces even for big meetings. Going back to you original query re Limerick HERE
