Wightlink Islanders face Mildenhall Fen Tigers in the second leg of the National league KO Cup Semi-final tonight with a 7.30pm start time.

 

The Islanders are in a must win situation to extend their season, failure to overcome the 20 point lead the Fen Tigers hold will bring an end to their 2011 home season on the Island next Tuesday 20th September against Sheffield/Scunthorpe and no progression to the KO Cup final against Stoke.

 

Co-promoter Chris Hunt said, "I'd just like to see a good performance, it would be disappointing to lose, I would be really disappointed if we don't put up a fight. If everybody does their best then that is all they can do and all I can ask."

 

This weekend also sees the Wightlink Islanders travel to Buxton on Sunday afternoon in another rearranged league fixture to take on the Hitmen who the Islanders beat 49-34 early last month at Smallbrook.

 

Hunt added, "It's not impossible but 21 points is a lot, if it were 16 points you might think there was a better chance. It has to be our best performance of the year tonight, we haven't won by 20 points all season so this has to be a special performance if we are to progress."

Heat 01: Simmons, Branford, Cottham, Baseby, 4-2, 4-2, 70.2 (41-59)

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Gary Cottham, Robert Branford, Jack Hargreaves R/R - Aaron Baseby

Comments:Aaron Baseby takes the rider replacement ride.

IoW make the gate for a 5-1 lead, but Branford goes round Cottham on 4th bend. They both suffer a couple of bumps going through the 1st bend, 3rd time round, but Cottham holds onto a good 3rd place.

Heat 02: Baseby, Chessell, Walter, Halsey Ret, 3-3, 7-5, 72.3 (44-62)

Line Up: Ross Walter, Luke Chessell, Daniel Halsey, Aaron Baseby

Comments: Great gate from Chessell, but he's bumped and battered on the 2nd bend, and the tigers go either side of him, with Walter struggling at the back. However, Halseys bike sounds very ropey going past, and sure enough, stops on the back straight, to gift an shared heat to the IoW.

Heat 03: Re-Run: Blackbird, Starke, Jacobs, 2-4, 9-9, 71.8 (46-66)

Line Up: Rob Smith, Paul Starke, Joe Jacobs, Lewis Blackbird

Comments: Starke away well on the inside, but Smith and Blackbird got tangled up, but it's Smith that was excluded, seemed like they touched each other and couldn't do much about it, but after a long, and very agitated call from the IoW management, Smith has to go - excluded from re-run. Both up & ok.

Re-Run: This time Starke gets clamped on the inside by Jacobs and finds himself last going down the back straight, but he goes round Jacobs on 2nd bend, next time around, before setting after Blackbird, and only just failing.

Heat 04: M Baseby, Warwick, A Baseby, Chessell, 2-4, 11-13, 70.5 (48-70)

Comments: IOW gate to a 5-1 lead, but Chessell is passed by both Tigers within half a lap. M Baseby then set after Warwick, who drifted wide on the 1st bend, lap 4 to go past on the inside for the heat advantage.

Heat 05: Starke, Branford, Smith, Blackbird, 4-2, 15-15, 70.9 (52-72)

Line Up: Rob Smith, Paul Starke, Robert Branford, Jack Hargreaves R/R - Lewis Blackbird

Comments:Lewis Blackbird takes the rider replacement ride.

Smith with an absolute flyer, and Starke joined him for another 5-1 position to the IOW but again a tiger pulls one of them back, with Branford going past Smith early on, before Blackbird has a really good go at him, narrowly coming a cropper after a big locker on the final bend.

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Gary Cottham, Mark Baseby, Daniel Halsey

Comments: Cottham gates, with Simmons moving into 2nd on inside, and then swiftly past Cottham to lead, leaving him open to attack from Baseby, who promptly falls and stays down on bend 1, lap 3, to stop the race, which is awarded. Baseby up & ok.

Comments: Warwick, head down, gates well to lead, with Walter at the back, hoping for an ef. From gate.

Heat 08: Re-Run: Branford, Baseby, Cottham, Chessell, 1-5, 24-24, 70.9 (61-81)

Line Up: Gary Cottham, Luke Chessell, Jack Hargreaves R/R - Robert Branford, Aaron Baseby

Comments: Robert Branford takes the rider replacement ride.

Branford away well, as is Baseby, and just as the Tigers fan in front of me get all excited, the ref (somewhat inconsistently) puts on the red light.

Re-Run: More even start, but the tigers get the better of both inside and outside battles to lead, the normally fast starting Cottham getting bogged down. From gate, although Cottham tried hard.

Comments: Both tigers gate, then rear up to let the IoW through, how sporting. Its Starke thats clear, and looking very quick again, whilst Smith fights against Baseby, and loses on the 4th bend, lap 2.

Comments: Good start from Simmons to lead, Cottham seemed to be put off by a rearing and out of control Blackbird inside him to miss his 2nd gate in a row. Simmons stormed clear, from gate.

Comments: Mark Baseby takes the rider replacement ride.

Great gate from the tigers, but as Branford clamps down on Warwick, they touch, Warwick has to throttle off to miss the bucking Branford, but the ref just lets them go? Not going to make a difference, as we were never likely to go through from this situation, but hey ho. From gate.

Comments: Even break, but it's Smith who takes the lead, Chessell trying to cut back underneath the tigers, but not having enough speed. Jacobs pushing Smith hard at the front, and Chessell getting wider and wider trying to take Halsey, just missing out on line.

Comments: Simmons out well, but its Branford who takes the lead, and even super Simmons can't pass him this time, and so ends his max hopes. From gate.

Comments: Starke away well, but its the Tigers who packed the minor places, with Walter making a better fist of this race, and not finishing too far behind Baseby. From gate.

Comments: Simmons away well to lead, whilst Starke is nudged wide to be in 3rd place, behind Branford. Starke is winding it on, getting closer to Branford, but misses out to lose by 4 bike lengths, as the Tigers win on the night as well, congrats to them against Stoke.

This meeting is the second leg of the KOC semi-final. Consecutive scores following on from the first leg are in brackets. Score at Mildenhall was 57-37.

 

Also announced that the Isle of Wight End of Season Presentation will be held on Saturday 22nd October at the trackside bar, with a buffet, music and the trophy presentation.

 

Mildenhall officially through to the final of the KOC!

Heeps having a spin after the meeting at Foxhall tomorrow so hopefully he comes through ok and takes his place at number 1 for the tigers for the run in.
