Conkers
There were two World Individual Ice Racing Meetings over the weekend in Saalfelden, Austria, and Kuusankoski, Finland. The results were supplied to me by a third party, and I suspect there is a mistake unless there are two riders, both called Tommy Flyktman. Either that or he has developed the art of being in two places at once .* The top 8 go through to the Semi Finals, and there is the third qualifier (which is listed by the FIM as QR 2) next weekend in Olou, Finland. I understand that Graham Halsall tried hard but was unable to match the opposition. Good to see Johnny Tuinstra doing well, he is going to be big this year! Saalfelden 11.01.2004: 1. Maxim Baraboshkin (RUS) - 14 (1 - final A) 2. Franz Zorn (AUT) - 14 (2 - final A) 3. Alexander Balashov (RUS) - 13 (3 - final A) 4. Johnny Tuinstra (HOL) - 10 (4 - final A) 5. Juri Polikarpov (RUS) (2, 3, 2, 1, 3) - 11 (4 - Final) 5. Vladimir Lumpov (RUS) (2, 3, 3, 3, 1) - 12 (3 - semi-final) 6. Marian Kreklau (GER) (Ex, 2, 2, 3, 2) - 9 (3 - semi-final) 7. Martin Posch (AUT) (0, 1, 1, Ex, 0) - 2 15. Mark Uzzel (GBR) (1, 0, 0, 0, 0) - 1 16. Martin Behal (CZE) (0, 0, 0, Ex, 0) - 0 Good first effort by Swindon based grass tracker, Mark Uzzell. Looking at the field as a whole, he had quite a tough debut in the World Championship. He is also in the Golden Spike series which culminates at Assen in March. That uses the 'old' GP knockout (24 heats) format. Also nice to see Stefan Pletschacher back after his injury in Berlin in December 2002. shazzybird
Can anyone within the Ice Speedway world help me please....... A friend of mine has a fella that works for him by the name of Rob (I am trying to find out his last name!) He says that he is an Ice Speedway Rider and is in the England Ice Speedway Team, could someone please send me a list of all the members names so that I can show my friends so that they can either believe him or just dunk him in the River which is what they really want to do
Conkers
There are three Brits currently on the Ice - Graham Halsall - Linconshire Plant Hire Operator & Enduro rider (for fun!); Mark Uzzell - Swindon based Grasser; and Roger Newton - Macclesfield Grasser and designer at BAe. That's not to say your friend Rob hasn't been to Sweden with Graham and the others for a Training camp, but I've never heard the name Rob. Don't dunk him in the river JUST yet, as will see all three in March at Assen, and I can ring Roger in a couple of weeks after the first two rounds of the Golden Spike are over. I did have Roger's meeting schedule which is meetings every weekend for a few weeks. One thing to try and ask is the names of the two Americans who trained with the Brits for the last few years. If he has been to training camp he'll know their names. If you e-mail me at admin@iancharlesphotos.net I'll tell you, in case he reads this. shazzybird
It's not Rob Irvine, is it? He was certainly involved a few years ago. Last I heard, he'd broken his leg and retired. Any ideas where he came from Duncrusadin? All know is this lad or man should I say is an electrician and works in Dover sub-contracting at the moment and was telling the lads that he was racing Jan 4 or 5th I think somewhere abroad. He used to live in Deal, but I've lost track of him - we both rode is SE centre Grasstracks around the same time (late seventies/early eighties). I remember sending him a get well card when he broke his leg ice racing but that was years ago. He'd only be in his mid forties now, so it's quite possible that he's still riding. Conkers
Okay. I've done some digging for you. There are FOUR Brits riding, Graham, Roger and Mark, plus Rob Irving! You'll find their results at this site IsRacing.net. It's all in Swedish, but if you look around there are links to results (Resultat),Racing Dates (Kalender) and the names of all those riding in the Sweden this winter (forare anmalda till serien). Rob Irving doesn't appear to have ridden yet, although he may have been at Training and ridden in meetings not listed, although I can't find any listed for the first weekend (3/4-1-04). Graham and Mark are racing in Series A. Mark also rides in Series B along with Roger. It may be that Rob should have ridden in one of the series, but Mark has had to double up. Either way, he may well be the same Rob that your friend knows. As I said in an earlier post, I haven't heard his name mentioned before, but if he has been away for a few years as Duncrusadin says then I won't have heard of him. I hope he hasn't had a dunk in the river after all!
shazzybird
Thanks for that Conkers will pass the information on....hopefully we are not too late if he is Rob Irving lol

Conkers
Thought you would be interested to hear that Rob Irving was the top scoring Brit in a B meeting in Sweden a couple of weeks ago. I only got the brief results in a text message, but Rob scored 2, Roger and Mark failed to score and Graham didn't take part (he was in an A meeting) Well done Rob! Guest Jawaeso2003
Hi Girls & Guys, I see you have been discussing me...Can i introduce myself...yes its Rob Irving!!! Hi Shazzybird, I had to chuckle to myself as i was having this conversation with Lee John at work, a couple of weeks ago, i think that is who your friend is and i think also that you are related to Ted H? if that is the case then Ted & J know me very well... Yes, i am still doing Ice Speedway at 49 and enjoying myself. In November, i purchased a new frame from Tjitte Bootsma whilst in Sweden training which is a blessing after the bike i was riding before, and i think that the latest results will show that i am doing fairly well. This year will make my 20th in Ice Speedway, being the longest serving of the Brits competing, but it consumes a lot of money and we dont get any sponsorship, so making it a very hit and miss sport at times, however, this year, for me at least is proving to be very enjoyable. Its true that i havnt been in all of the rounds in the Swedish league as yet, Hedemora being the only one so far, the meeting in Uppsala was cancelled on the same weekend and due to work commitments has made it difficult for me, however, i was in Flims last weekend in the re-arranged meeting, origionally in the Swiss Championship but then concurrently in the Golden Spikes meeting being held at the same time, in place of Sergei Kazakov, scoring 4 in the S.championship and 5 in the G.spikes, 12th and 13th places respectively. I could have travelled to St.Johann the following day and also taken part in the meetings that are being held this weekend but again, it is proving difficult in getting time off and not being paid for it hits the pocket... I am due to ride in the re-arranged meeting in Uppsala on the 20th, Gavle on the 21st and in Bolnas on the 22nd of this month, hopefully we wont have any more cancellations...Well, i hope this clears up any questions that you may still be asking but do feel free to e-mail me at any time.....Take care..Rob. Conkers
Hi Rob, so who will be the Brits in Assen then? (Apart from Graham obviously). If you are there I will need photos of you, so get those leathers clean! If you speak to Roger and Mark send them my regards Ian
shazzybird
Hiya Rob Thanks for confirming it is you, I was talking to Tony in the pub and said I would ask on the speedway forum about the Ice Speedway as this really isn't something that I have followed, told Chalkie and that lads that I had asked because if it wasn't you they were gonna dunk you in the river. LJ did say that he had seen a few photos, I'll pop down the mill and have a gander at them one day if you don't mind. I did see an Ice Speedway bike when I went to Rye last year for the 75th anniversary of our beloved sport and how you lot ride them I'll never know you either have guts or no brain with them spikes Yes TedH is my Uncle and as you can tell from various postings throughout the forum I was and still am very proud of him, he's not just an Uncle he's also my best friend (next to my dad of course, well....... he bails me out more!!) Will be following your results through the forum now. Maybe someday I make it to an Ice Speedway meeting and cheer you on, perhaps we can have a works outing with the lads from the mill project.
