fullbore
Sorry, I miss the point you are making They are representing GB not England. Niamh
NathanB
You make a fair point but if we were being pedantic then strictly speaking anybody who rides for Team GB would never be representing their country as GB is an island, not a country. In effect, Team GB are representing their countries.
Star Lady
They are representing GB not England. Niamh But would you be making the same sort of remarks if they had been wearing Kilts?

Star Lady
Yes. Niamh The I fail to see your point Great Britain comprises England, Wales and Scotland (not sure about N Ireland) so why can't fans uses the national dress of any of the compnent nations. Pedantic in the extreme IMHO

Pedantic in the extreme IMHO What a perfect demonstration that you simply have not idea of the patriotism in ones own country that forms GB. I'm sure a large majority of English speedway fans would be rightly upset if the team last night was referred to as Scotland. Yes as it happens all the riders were from England, but then they are not the entire team an the assistant manager certainly wasn't born in England. Out of interest would you care to reveal your nationality? Niamh

Pedantic in the extreme IMHO GB is England, Scotland and Wales. UK is the United Kingdon of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. So it's England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland As a Welshman, I agree it pedantic. Nobody moans when people wave a Cornish flag for Bomber in the GP's or would have done if they'd waved one for him and Ben this week. Call them Great Britain (not the patheticly naff sounding "Team GB") but by all means have people waving the flags of England (and hopefully one day Scotland and Wales)
poncho
I have no issue with the gb team being referred to as team England and the like to be honest. I would like to see a team England and a team Scotland though. Yeah sure we would be a bit rubbish but that's no different from the football and rugby teams. Can't see it happening though
Marmite
Who gives a toss if it is Team GB or Team England, surely you should all be debating the future of Team Whoever and how we are going to compete with those in the final on Saturday? I know Lyons got loads of abuse on here last season, but what did he actually do wrong? Did he step down, was enough done to keep him? Middlo I am afraid made some baffling decisions with the Joker and selection of Bridger. Options are limited, but I am still not convinced about Bridger. And is there any truth in what Pearson indicated last night some of the riders don't get on?
spook
tbh I don't understand why anyone would want to take an English, Welsh or Scottish flag to a GP or SWC..... in speedway our riders are from Great Britain (currently anyway)..... taking a flag of one of the nations that makes up GB imo is making a political statement ... not a flag of support for our riders wierdly i've never had an issue with the Cornish flag... probably as its so interesting..... but tbh its no different to the above

Niamh No Problem I was born in England but have Welsh blood (and a smattering of French but I try to ignore that) As such I support the Welsh rugby team, the English cricket team and the Aussies when it comes to Speedway. I support nothing French I still fail to see why fans of GB cannot wear a Cross of St George, a tartan kilt or a blook leek if they want to do so. There is no emblem of Gt Britain AFAIK
SCB
There is no emblem of Gt Britain AFAIK A cup of tea Would prefer people wave English flags rather than Polish, Russian or Danish TBH. Edited July 15, 2011 by SCB

Marmite
Have a look at this. Wow, that does not paint a good picture of this boy. If Middlo knew all this with Ben and Eddie already in the team you have to blame Middlo for selecting Bridger.
