Hackney V Isle Of Wight

Recommended Posts

The Hackney Hawks will be out for revenge for their recent narrow defeat across the water when they host the Isle of Wight at their “other” nest of Lakeside on Friday (July 8th @ 8pm).

They will be facing an Islanders team that offers a strong Rye House connection, courtesy of 2010 Rocket Paul Starke, two year Cobra Rob Smith and former Raider Gary Cottham. The visitors also include 7th year Islander and former Exeter Falcon Nick Simmonds and newly signed Danny Warwick, otherwise known as “The Dreaded One”.

Hopefully after last nights win, the Hawks will be up for taking all three points against the Islanders as well.

Nah, hopefully the Islanders can take something away with 'em ;)

Oh dear absolutely shocking weather where I am in Barking just 8 or so miles from the track... Very heavy rain... Let's hope this goes away and/or there's that uniquely different weather system over the quarry otherwise this looks a goner...: again...

Not surprised that it's wet up the Barking Creek Parsnips old fruit! :P Will be in touch with the track staff after they've put the safety fence up for an update on conditions but, looking at the Met Office Rainfall radar, rain will soon pass over. In fact here at Erith (just across the other side of the Thames from the circuit) it's not raining and the sun is trying to appear but has not succeeded so far. BBC Radio weather check has just imparted news that rain is heading north leaving sunshine and showers with latter decreasing in number as day progresses.

Intend to be at the track early afternoon and will be updating further from there plus answering all the "Is it on?" phonecalls.

That's good news indeed Bryn...

The weather system south of the River as opposed to north of it is invariably different as I've noted many times but as I say here it's shocking... Let's hope it does indeed pass over and head north...: where it belongs!!!

12.30pm WEATHER UPDATE:

A strange orange ball-shaped thing and equally strange patches of blue sky have appeared above - hopefully they'll stay there! No problems then at this stage - next update scheduled for circa 2.30pm.

2.45pm WEATHER CHECK:

No real change other than rain clouds have now seemingly moved away, sun's been appearing with patches of blue sky too and Met Office indicate that there'll be NO further wet stuff (apart from drinks at the bar!) in the Tilbury (nearest they've got to our postcode) area today.

So tonight's meeting is definitely on - come along and support the Hawks as they take on foreign invaders - well the IOW is a separate island isn't it?

Next update circa 4.30ish! er.... make that 5pmish as NO change at 4pm and all systems go!

5.30pm WEATHER UPDATE:

Training will be ending shortly - they've been out there since 2.30pmish. NO problems with weather OR track. Traffic a bit heavy but, as Ted Rogers used to say, COME ON DOWN! First race 8pm.

Errr.... no he didn't.... Ted Rogers was the host of 3-2-1 (Dusty Bin and those stupid clues!!!). "Come on Down" was The Price Is Right 'catchphrase' and was hosted by (originally) Leslie Crowther. But it's an easy mistake to make! :P

Ah but I was referring to my next door neighbour's window cleaner Ted Rogers who, as he collected all his money door to door used to say 'come on down to the Red Barn PH tonight - beer's on me!

My, of my were there traffic problems!

Still, was grateful that my good friend Christina was slightly behind us in the appalling traffic queues so getting there late but before the ref meant missed no action!

Result and scorers (forgive mistakes but I'm no 'SCB'..!)

Hackney 58 (Shane Hazelden 0; Ben Morley 10+1; David Mason 13; Marc Owen 5+3; Barrie Evans 9; Brandon Freemantle 9+1; Ben Hopwood 12+4)

Isle of Wight 35 (Nick Simmons 7; Danny Warwick 1; Rob Smith 9; Paul Starke 12; Rhys Naylor 1; Luke Chessell 5)

Outstanding performance (and what a HUGE improvement on previous AE showings..) was from Brandon Freemantle - holding off Nick Simmons on a T/R in heat 13 could be a real watershed in this young man's career...

Great stuff! :approve:

Agreed. He looked so gutted when he made the gate in heat 14 and it was then stopped when Chessell came down. But he gated again and looked full of confidence. Very impressive.

Was there any news on Shane's hand injury? It was obviously nasty enough to force him out of the meeting, but hopefully it's a quick healing thing.

Not a great lover of this track ,lack of atmosphere to far away from the action ..Having said that the track surface was in great condition largely down to the rain before hand and it produced some excellent, enjoyable racing for those present..Unfortunatly the speedway fans do not give this level the support it deserves, and i fear for its long term survival and the futures of our young riders..Of which the Hawks have several, the youngest of which Brandon Freemantle 15YRS is starting to show his considerable potential.....

The racing was indeed good - and special mention should be made of Nick Simmons who put on a very entertaining performance.

In terms of the crowd, well yes it was disappointing of course but the traffic conditions were truly awful so that needs to be taken into account...
