Herbie Hancock

Love to see the old bugger win it. Had great support from the British fans and was quick to acknowledge them. :approve::t:

Must admit i'm a bit with Orion on this. Was quite relieved to read his post actually because it made me realise it's not just me!

I do kind of shake my head in disbelief at all this "amazingly popular rider" stuff. All that grinning and smiling don't wash with me I tells ya. All very strange. And blatently advertising that drink product during his national anthem had me metaphorically reaching for the sick bag.

Good and fair rider though. No arguments about that.

We stayed at the same hotel as Greg a few years back for a Polish GP and he was quality. Plenty of time for a chat and just came cross as a genuinely nice guy. Would still rather Nicki win it though.

Agree with you about Nicki. Nicki was, and still would be, the most popular rider to win the WC.

Well in the pub i go in we boo him the time and always have done ...you like him fair enough but don't get you knickers in a twist because others don't ....i do like Ben barker by the way thou

But Swindon fans boo everyone that isn't Leigh Adams.

There was a genuine sense of confusion last Thursday when Schlein won Johno's meeting. Half the crowd knew they should be booing, but couldn't work out why.

Personally, I'd be very happy to see Greg Hancock win the world title again.

Usually I can't be doing with yanks either. But, when it comes to speedway there's something about the way the Americans approach the sport that I've always liked. Maybe it's because I view Greg as being the last of the old guard. But, there's nothing I'd like more than to see him win another world championship.

For the record I do like Ben Barker as well. Does that make me bipolar?

Greg Hancock.

Genuinely a happy, nice guy, super-talented on a speedway machine, and makes riding fast look boring and easy because he does it with such smoothness, grace and aplomb that you kind of take him for granted, in a comfort-blanket kind of a fashion.

When you hear CONSTANTLY of other riders bemoaning their set ups, tweaks, silencer issues, being rode high and wide (if they've met Pedersen already on the night), and other stuff.. Hancock always conducts his interview with a grin and a smile. He doesn't say 'expletive' at every interview like some (although I do love the Aussie kid.. he just has interview tourettes), and would be an absolute worthy world champion and ambassador to the sport if he wins the GP series again.

What's he going to be fed up about??? He travels the world, goes from country to country, gets on a speedway bike and mixes it, and currently beats, with the best on the planet. While most of world is jobbing 9-5, Greg Hancock is riding speedway for his life, and riding it well. And I think he appreciates the fact. Doing something you love WILL put a smile on your face, it's a great position to be in, if he looked hacked off doing it like others, then there'd be reasons not to like him.

In a world where sports are littered with drug takers, drug cheats, serial womanisers who do half of their family, people who like granny prostitutes, media whores and wage mercenaries, Hancock, as with most speedway riders, is the epitome of what being in a privileged job should be all about.

All riders plug their sponsors, it's how it is. You can't draw a gate position without pointing to your arm these days.. it's expected of you.

For me, if a Brit don't win, then somebody like Hancock winning the GP is an result... and a pleasure to cheer and rejoice.

Good look Herbie, keep that nerve and rack up some points.

Great result last night, good for you Herbie. It would really be a pleasure if he won this year, nice to have someone cheerful instead of a certain miserable Pole who would probably crack his face if he smiled too often.

As for not liking Herbie because he's an American does that apply to Sam E, Billy H, Billy J, Ronney C etc ?

I'd not have Greg in my list of "likes" (well, I did when he won the final last night, 13/2 :D) and I know a few people who think the same. Boring rider and he does come across as someone whos trying bloody hard to be nice.

Personally, if there was a meeting with 16 Greg Hancocks taking place in my back garden I'd not pay to watch it. On the other hand, I don't like Nicki but imagine a meeting with 16 Nickis taking chunks out of each other :D

I'd not begrudge Greg a 2nd World Title, and in fact would much prefer he wins a title to Gollob wining a title.

I'm with Orion and Grachan though.

I agree with most of this - except I'd love to see Tomazs win another title! I like American riders most of the time but Hancock is the one I never really took to. Of course the Cradley/Wolves thing is part of it but I didn't fee the same about Hamill...even before he rode for us! I would have had Billy in my team in a heartbeat but Greg...no thanks *yawn*

Just for a bit of clarification, I wasn't suggesting that Greg Hancock is my favourite rider, far from it in fact, but the point I was making was that if the guys I'm shouting for can't win then I'd always be happy for Greg to do well.
