Just a thought, what happens to teams who are riding on this night? Stoke, for example, are at home to Belle Vue. So we will be missing Sarjeant, and BV would be missing Howarth and Garrity?

How scary is it that a Dane rode in a GP at 16 and scored points, yet none of them riders above could score points in the EL. While I appreciate that theres some talent in that field, we lag so far behind other countries :(

Too true, the days of a Kennett or Bridger coming in and dominating the NL (or CL as it was then) have gone too and neither of those have gone on to be top world riders. This meeting will be good and competitive but on the whole, I fear for the future of British speedway.

To be fair the old conference league was not as strong as the current 3rd tier of speedway and young riders can suddenly make rapid progress at any time..Kyle Howarth has shown he can hack it at premier level at 17yrs and some others are not far behind..The main problem with these kids is gating which in the main is not yet up to the higher levels of racing .It also takes loads of money to maintain the bikes even to national league level ( clutches being a vital ingredient in that respect )..Few families have the resources to constantly renew parts, and with low pay rates it is a struggle to keep the kids racing..So yes it is hard to see many making the grade..But they will keep persevering ,and hopefully some will make the breakthrough...

Totally agree with your points Waco, but just as a comparison, Eddie Kennett was a PL Number 1 in his first season in the division, which was his second season racing. I can't see any of the lads here making the same impact i'm afraid, some, hopefully most of them will make the grade in the sport, however I can't see a future GP rider in the field i'm afraid.

You are probably right Ben as things stand.,but riders all reach their peak at different stages of their carears and that includes ages..I was just pointing out the financial problems are probably at there greatest at the present time..I must admit i find some of the aussie kids amazing though they ride with great flair and determination...

Fair comment but after bursting on to the scene kennet or bridger not gone on to be world class yet so maybe feeling your way and not bursting on may see some become world class, think crump, tony rik and some others were slow burners at the start if memory serves me correct. go on shoot me down now

Crumpy was no slow burner but yes, I do believe TRick was a bit of a shock when he made it, from nowhere. I guess Zorro has proved in the last 4 or 5 years it's never too late! That said, I don't think Rickardsson was NL level at 18 ;)

That's very true, glad my comments haven't been taken the wrong way either, because I'd love nothing more to see any of these lads go on to the top of the sport, it just seems there is no Kennett or Bridger coming through even, let alone a Crumpy or Rickardsson. I hope we do see a fair few of these lads head onwards and upwards into the Elite League and maybe even Grand Prix in future.

Ben did you see Robert Lambert go round Rye in about 59 secs a few weeks ago ,,believe hes only 13yrs old,, if hes not a gilt edged prospect i dont know what is? Appears to have the necessary back up too ..Recon the cheque books will be out in force in two years time, Hes the best ive seen at his age..

I imagine Kyle Howarth is the favourite to win this one.

Kyle is certainly flying just now, scored his 1st PL max recently but I have a sneaky feeling for Garrity and I think Ashley Morris will also be in the mix

Good luck to all the Heathens and former Heathens in the field, and there are quite a few!

I'd have to agree that Howarth, Garrity or Morris are the likely top three but I would keep an eye out for Hazelden too.

Okay. :lol::P

Crump got the British GP wild card at 19 and won his first three rides. He won his first GP at 20, though it did take him a while to put it all together and take the title (almost certainly because he was unfortunate to face TRick at his peak).

Rickardsson was already National Champion at 20 and won his first world title at 24.

I'm thoroughly enjoying watching NL racing and we've got some lads that are great value to watch and some will progress a fair bit over the next few years, but it is certainly true to say we've a long way behind some countries at the moment. Personally, while I understand the reasons, I think the restrictive pay structure in the NL does most of the riders no favours at that level. It must cost most of them more in petrol to get there than they can earn. How can these lads really compete if they're not really earning?!

...I don't think Rickardsson was NL level at 18 ;)

I don't think he was NL level at 12.:P

They seem the three favourites, but I'd not be surprised to see Joe Jacobs up there if he gates like he did in the recent KO Cup fixture at Rye!

Is there anyone going to this meeting who would be able to text updates to the updates site? If so, could you please either leave a message here or send me an email or pm.

Thanks
