FORMER Welsh Speedway rider Phil Morris is busily making plans for his Farewell Meeting at Birmingham on Thursday September 1.

Morris enjoyed a successful period in his career between 2007-2008 at the Midland track and the club’s promotion have kindly agreed to stage the event at their Perry Barr Stadium.

The meeting will take the form of an Individual event featuring some of the sport’s top stars, with additional heats featuring Under-21 riders and demonstration races from some of the rising Under-15 stars.

It will also be the first Farewell or Testimonial meeting where a rider has donated part of the proceeds to good causes.

Morris will be making a substantial donation to the Speedway Riders’ Benevolent Fund and will also contributing towards the Under-15 development funds.

The popular Welshman, who was forced to retire from the sport through injury at the end of 2009, has been granted the Farewell Meeting by the sport's governing body (BSPA) and he is keen to support causes close to his heart.

Morris said: "The SRBF helped me several times when I was on the injury list, so I would like to help them out. I will also be doing something for the Under-15 lads who I have been helping to develop since I joined the Team GB set up last season."

The first rider confirmed for the big night is Morris' former team mate at Reading and Lakeside, Lee Richardson.

The Hammers skipper said: "I've known Phil for many years. He was an excellent team-mate and I am delighted to ride in his farewell meeting."

More top names and special travel deals from former clubs will be announced soon.

Fans can also sponsor riders and heats. Full details available at www.philmorris.info

Fair play to Phil for donating his proceeds to the SRBF and British Under 15 speedway. I shall be there for his testimonial and some good names added so far. Hope he gets a good turnout on 1st September. :t:

From BSPA Site

PHIL Morris is offering complimentary admission to all forty-two registered riders of the British Youth Championship when he stages his Farewell Meeting at Birmingham on Thursday 1st September.

The event is being staged at the Midland track’s Perry Barr Stadium and the Young Lions Team Manager will also be inviting some of the youngsters to take part in demonstration races during the evening.

The Welshman remains passionate about the development of young riders in Britain and hopes the opportunity for some of the rising stars to showcase their talents will be appreciated by the crowd on the night.

He said: "Preparation for night is going very well and a number of the sport's leading riders have already confirmed they will ride for me.

“But in addition to that I’m particularly pleased that there will also be a number of races featuring stars from the Under-21 and Under-16 age groups.

“It’s important we give these young lads as much track time as possible and with them racing in front of a large crowd it should prove to be great experience for them.”

And in a further emphasis on British Youth Speedway, Hampshire based car detailing specialists Advanced Vehicle Finishing are kindly sponsoring the Under-21 and Under-16 heats.

The company owner Matthew Stringer knows Morris well from his many years service to Reading Speedway.

Stringer commented: “Phil always gave 100% commitment to Reading Speedway and is showing the same commitment to the development of Youth Speedway in this country. Therefore I am delighted to support the heats involving the youngsters."

More information on his company's services can be found at www.advancedvehiclefinishing.co.uk

There are also opportunities for companies and individuals to support Morris’ big night by means of heat, rider and mascot sponsorship. These packages are available from £50.

For more information contact Paul Hunsdon on 07841 523458 or via email commercial@philmorris.info

The event will also see Phil donate a substantial amount of the proceeds to the Speedway Riders’ Benevolent Fund.

Taken from Brummies site:

TEAM GB Captain and Grand Prix star Chris Harris is a confirmed starter for the Phil Morris Farewell meeting at Birmingham on Thursday September 1 (7.30pm).

The Belle Vue Ace accepted an invitation from Morris to ride in the meeting when the pair were in Poland for last week’s Speedway World Cup.

The popular Cornishman said: “I’m delighted to accept Phil’s invitation to ride in his farewell meeting.

“We have always got on well over the years and it’s good to see him helping youth speedway in this country.”

Another rider confirmed for the meeting is Birmingham’s Ulrich Ostergaard.

‘The Big O’ gained cult-hero status during his time at Phil’s former club Reading in 2008 and is looking forward to seeing the many Racers fans who will be making the journey up to the meeting.

Speaking on the double rider confirmation, Morris said: “I was over the moon when Bomber said he could make it, as I know he has a very busy schedule.

“His performance in the World Cup showed he is still one of the best riders in the world.

“Whilst Ulrich is a spectacular rider, I remember him winning the final ever meeting at Reading’s Smallmead Stadium in 2008.

“The Racers fans are very special to me and I know they loved the season he had with them.”

TAI Woffinden is the latest big name star to agree to ride in the forthcoming Phil Morris Farewell Meeting.

The event is set to take place at Birmingham on Thursday 1st September and Woffinden’s inclusion means that all five members of the Great Britain team that rode in the recent World Cup Race-Off will be taking part.

The Wolverhampton favourite will join fellow Brits Chris Harris, Edward Kennett, Ben Barker and Lewis Bridger at the Perry Barr stadium, along with the earlier announced Lee Richardson and Ulrich Ostergaard.

Morris is naturally delighted with the addition of Woffinden to his big night line-up. He said: “Tai is a sensational rider who is just going to get better and better.

“I was over the moon when he said would ride in my farewell meeting.”

Another rider who has agreed to take part in the event is former Reading Racer Zdenek ‘Sam’ Simota. The Czech Republic star is keen to put himself in the shop window for a 2011 team spot.

Morris added: “I know Sam from our time in the 2007 squad at Reading.

“He is a rider who was very popular at Smallmead and has appeared as a track reserve in the Czech Republic Grand Prix.

“I am really pleased he is coming over for my meeting.”

Jason Crump is riding! :approve: , cant wait for this meeting

Taken from Brummies site.

PHIL Morris has added another big name to his Farewell Meeting line-up with the announcement of three-times World Champion Jason Crump.

The hugely-popular Australian no longer rides regularly in Britain and will be making a special journey from his Swedish home to compete in the event at Birmingham on Thursday, September 1.

The two riders raced together in Belle Vue’s 2006 Elite League side and have always had a great respect for each other.

Crump said: "Phil and I go back a long way. We've always got on well and he was a great team-mate to have at Kirkmanshulme Lane.”

Morris is particularly thrilled that the Aussie is taking time out from his heavy schedule to fly in specifically for his big night.

He added: “Jason is a guy I have always regarded as the ultimate pro. The fact he is riding in my meeting when he is no longer UK based also show what a top bloke he is.”

The line-up for the meeting at Perry Barr is really taking shape and features other major stars of the sport; this includes Britain’s current Grand Prix star Chris Harris and former GP riders Lee Richardson and Tai Woffinden.

They join previously announced fellow Brits Edward Kennett, Danny King, Ben Barker and Lewis Bridger, plus former Reading favourites Ulrich Ostergaard and Sam Simota.

In addition to the main event there will be a number of other races involving Britain’s rising Under-16 and Under-21 stars.

And in a further commitment to the sport that served him so well during his twenty-year career, Morris has also pledged that he will donate part of the proceeds from the night to the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund and British Youth Speedway development.

Full details of the meeting format and the remaining riders will be revealed next week.

What format is planned for the meeting?

Please let it be an individual. I bloody hate benefit meetings with made up teams.

It's fair to say this line-up looks like one of the strongest for a benefit meeting for a long time!
